$100 Million Box Office Movies

Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy each have 23 $100 million movies...the most of active actors

Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy each have 25 $100 million movies…the most of active actors

Want to know which actor or actress has the most $100 million box office movies?  How about finding which actor or actress has the highest percentage of $100 million box office movies.  Interested in career box office earnings? Want to know how many Star Trek movies hit the magical $100 million mark?  Well you have come to the right place …. because we have all of that information and lots more.

I have fond memories of the summer of 1995.  But why Cogerson?  Well let me tell you, that was the summer Die Hard With A Vengeance was released. After a blockbuster opening weekend, Die Hard 3 started to fade quickly.  For some unknown reason I really wanted the movie to make it to $100 million. My girlfriend at the time was doing the same thing …except she was rooting for Casper.  All summer the two us seemed in competition as to which movie would reach the goal.  It took all summer but Die Hard 3 (the taste of victory) finally got there. Casper made it at the end of September.

As soon as both movies reached the $100 million mark…they were immediately pulled from theaters.  Today reaching the $100 million mark at the box office is not as pretigious as it once was….but studios still seem very interested in making that plateau. In 2014, Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow seemed to be hanging around in theaters unusually long…but once it reached $100 million it was quickly pulled from theaters.  It seems that there is some marketing value in being able to say…”Edge of Tomorrow is Tom Cruise’s first lead role $100 million non sequel movie since War of the Worlds”.

I have been writing Ultimate Movie Rankings pages on actors/actresses and movie subjects for over six years. When I wrote my Dean Martin page I was shocked (I had dismissed his movie career) that he had so many movies box office hits.  At that point I started to compare Martin to other performers and realized his total of 30 $100 million movies was one the best totals of all actors and actresses that I have written about over those 4 years.  While doing the Martin comparisons I realized that I should do a page that put all of this information into one place….so here you go… my historical look at $100 million movies from 1930-2017.

John Wayne has the most $100 million box office hits. During his career he had 50.

Anne Hathaway is off to a great start with regards to $100 million movies…she already has 12 of them.

The rules and logic of the movie stats found in this page

1.  All box office totals are adjusted for inflation figures.  But why?  In an effort to accurately compare different era performers you have to use tickets sold as the common denominator.    A 4 million dollar box office movie in 1940 would have been a monster hit….a 4 million dollar box office movie in 2015 would be a serious failure.

2.  All box office figures are North America totals only.   Oversea box office totals for any movie made before 1990 is almost impossible to find.  Once again to make the comparisons equal…I was forced to only use North America box office totals.

3.  Cameos, direct to DVD movies, and tv movies are not included in the totals.  Also many silent films do not make the tally….this hurts some actors like Gary Cooper and Myrna Loy.  John Wayne’s 70 plus Western B movies also did not make the tally.

4.  Where do I get my box office numbers?  For current movies….boxofficemojo.com is by the far the best place to look.  Things get much more difficult for any movie made before 1980.  Luckily I have 45 years of Variety magazines that provide box office information on movies made from 1935-1980.  I have also been lucky enough to get my hands on the Eddie Mannix MGM ledgers, the William Schaefer Warner Brothers ledgers and the Richard B. Jewell RKO ledgers.

5.   Almost everybody listed on the tables has a Cogerson Movie Score page…for a closer look at their career just check out the site index.  There are three exceptions to that….as I have not done a Jerry Lewis, Samuel L. Jackson or Gary Oldman page.  Jackson and Oldman were added because they are currently listed as the biggest box office winners of all-time.  Lewis is a work in progress…but I had his box office numbers.

6.  There are 1000s of actors and actresses that did not make this page.  I am sure somebody (William Powell and Shirley Temple come to mind) is out there that could crack some of the Top Tens listed on this page.  But I like to think that I have included almost all of the major stars from the last 85 years.

7.  The minimum movies needed to make this page was 10.  So James Cameron will have to wait until 2017 to be included here.

8. The box office numbers are through 04/03/2015.  Obviously current actors make their numbers out of date very fast.

9. Final thoughts:  Well if you actually made it all the way to the bottom of this page….congrats….I had fun putting this together.  Things I will be looking at in the future.  (1) Can Julia Roberts (16 movies) catch Judy Garland (23 movies)?  (2) Anne Hathaway (12 movies) and Jennifer Lawrence (7 movies) are off to awesome starts…can they keep that pace up?  (3) Are Tom Crusie (23 movies) and Eddie Murphy (23 movies) out of gas?…Murphy probably yes…Cruise…probably not.  (4) I wonder which person I will find that I am greatly under appreciating their movie career?  I never would have thought Dean Martin and Judy Garland were such beasts of the box office…but I was wrong then and will be wrong again…..but it is fun finding out!

  1. 1 BRUCE I’ve now had time to give detailed consideration to your excellent new look 100 Million dollar movies page and think that at first glance the table might be slightly misleading in that it BROADLY ranks the stars by their number of $100 million+ movies rather than by the monetary value of those flicks.

2 For example many stars have lower total grosses in their $100 million+ movies than Mr. Mumbles but are well above him in the primary rankings because of their greater number of $100 million + movies. Here are some specific examples and when I refer to grosses and averages and number of movies that all relates to just the $100 million+ movies

ALAN LADD Rank 61/No of movies 23/Gross$4.02 billion/Average $174.8 million
    BARBARA STANWYCK Rank 24/No of Movies 27.***Gross $4.08 billion/Average $151 mil
    JOAN CRAWFORD Rank 30/No of movies 27/Gross $3.64 billion/Average $134.8 million
    BETTY GRABLE Rank73/No of Movies21/Total $3.81 billion/Average $181.4 million
    MARLON BRANDO Rank 109/No of movies 16/Gross $4.33 billion/Average a massive $270.7 million
*** Your table wrongly credits Babs with 28 movies and although MB has a higher gross and a far superior average to her the gap between them is an astonishing 85 places in her favour

3 However you have provided us with the usual helpful sorter buttons which allows the material to be ranked in differing ways and in the end Mr M does reasonably well out of it because he is ranked 49th for his average gross per movie over his entire career and in fact only 13 persons out of the massive 463 listed have BOTH a higher career gross AND a better average per movie than he.

4 Also this is now on the whole a gem of a page and I will be consulting it often in the future and meanwhile I thank you on behalf of myself and other stats “scholars” among your regulars. [Sorry Steve you’re not included!]

    1. Hey Bob.
      1. True the default setting is most $100 million hits…..but for the first time the sort button on career gross actually works….so a reader can sort either way.
      2. Good to see somebody was using the tables….I often wonder if people use the sort button….well your comment proves at least one person does…..lol.
      3. As for Stanwyck….she is at 28….her 1932 movie Shopworn just got a slight adjustment….but it was enough for it to join the $100 million hit club.
      4. Good points about Marlon. As I was scanning through the table…I noticed some directors are listed…I thought I found them…..eventually I am going to get out a table that shows all the other movie making jobs….like directors, writing, music and producing.
      5. I have been using this page even more after the update….I love the career total column…it has always been a good view getter….but now it seems to be an even more useful tool.
      🙂

      1. BRUCE

I review periodically against your pages all the Cogerson stats in my data base including WW ones and the last review which ended in June took me three months to complete. I will go through it all again next year and would no doubt have then picked up Shopworn but I am for once ahead of the game regarding that movie and have amended Babs’ 100 millions to 28 so thanks for the info. Shopworn is one of Babs’ many movies that always lot my attention as for some reason I liked the title – the titles fascinate me almost as much as billing/stats !

  2. HI BRUCE

1 I think $250 million is way too high at least in relation to individual actors as it would favour stars whose careers were founded on a few massive hits but penalise the likes of Clint Eastwood whose wonderful career does not have too many vertiginous grossers but has a long run of very solid hits. In your current tables Clint would have just 2 [and one of those as director only] the Duke only 3 but Julie Andrews 5 and ole Mumbles 7.

2 So establishing a $250 threshold would set unreasonable targets for most stars particularly from the classic era and would give a misleading impression in the way that quoting Dean’s average of $300 million over 3 films does. Also if targets become TOO hard to attain for people’s idols they tend to lose interest. But as the saying goes “You’re the boss!” on this site – or is W o C?!

    1. Hey Bob. I think before we changed the UMR formula at the beginning of 2016….the new threshold was talked about more back then. Since dropping the box office %….it seems to have fixed some of the concerns that WoC had. Interesting how few movies reached that mark of the older stars. As for the boss of the site…..I am like the Queen of England…..she has the title…..but Parliment and the Prime Minister have all the power….lol.

      1. HI WH
1 Thanks for the explanation. Which one of you uses the Royal “We”?

2 One of my all time favourite TV movies is the lighthearted 1992 remake of Stanwyck’s Christmas in Connecticut starring Dyan Cannon and Tony Curtis. It wasn’t up to much [47% from IMDB] but I love it for Curtis’ delicious performance as a sneaky agent of Dyan in the movie.

3 In the movie she plays a big celeb called Elizabeth Blane and it suits their purposes to fool the public into thinking she’s married and Curtis poses as her husband and the fawning
Tony goes about introducing himself as “Mr Elizabeth Blane” displaying that great sense of timing that Tony had. I wonder if the real life billing conscious Archie ever introduced himself as Mr Dyan Cannon?

4 As always a Dan like link pops up. I was thinking about you when watching a 1968 episode of the TV detective Ironside series starring Raymond Burr. In the episode Ironside’s aunt is played by Jessie Royce Landis and I said to W o Bob “SHE’s been demoted in more ways than one. She used to be Cary Grant’s mother.” [in N by NW]

  3. BRUCE
1 I meant to say that I very much admired your clear, beautifully coloured miniature of The Duke on your excellently revamped 100 million dollar movies page. If you keep reproducing stills of that quality Steve will be paraphrasing to himself Nicholson’s remark about his pal Mumbles “When WH is no longer about we’ll all move up one!”

2 Your Cruise/Eddie Murphy pic is also nice. 31 Aug marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Princess Diana of England and newspapers and magazines have naturally been printing droves of articles about her. One recounts how in 1996 she was doing a tour of celebrities and visited Pinewood Studios in which some of the scenes for the first Mission Impossible movies were being shot. After meeting Cruise Diana, a tall woman, is supposed to have scolded her minders “Never let me meet HIM again. He’s not tall enough to talk to me.”

3 I wonder what she would have thought of Laddie! Certainly Nicole seemed to have been of the same mindset as the Princess because on her divorce from Tom in 2001 she told reporters “Now I can wear high heels again.” And of course old Godzilla rubbed further salt in the wound as the poster for the 1998 version of his movies had the admittedly appropriate tagline “Size DOES matter!” Ah! these macho times of Arnie and Dwayne the Rock Johnson are not happy ones for DeVito fans like Steve.

  4. SUNDAY ESSAY – THE WORK HORSE’s MAGICAL $100 MILLION
1 When I was growing up in the 1950s “one million dollars” was the term bandied about most as THE token of unenviable wealth. and in 1960 Anthony Quinn long consigned to supporting parts and/or unimportant lead roles but now landing more prestigious assignments like Portrait in Black in 1960 and Guns of Navarone in 1961 phoned a friend to confide that Tony’s bank balance had now reached the magic “one million dollars” Today according to the US Bureau of Labour Stats Tony would need to earn $8.36 million to equal his 1960 bank balance in real terms.

2 I think that it was in 2011 that Bruce started to provide for us this to me now-essential service and certainly since I joined his band of admirers reaching $100 million in adjusted domestic revenues has been seen as the Holy Grail for any movie and its star. However the aforementioned Bureau reckons that $111.29 million would have to be earned today and $112.6 tickets sales generated for those figures to have the same value as a $100 million in 2011.

3 In 1974-8 the TV hit series The Six Million Dollar Man was launched, the title deriving from the fact that the hero was built from high-tech equipment costing 6 million dollars. A journalist recently quipped that it would today have to be called The Thirty One Million Dollar Man to wow audiences! Not everybody remembers about inflation however. In the 1970s my father used to visit a friend who had an 5 year son and my father would give the boy a British one pound coin which would have been good for a youngster back then. However fast forward 20 years when that boy was 25 and was still handed a one pound coin by my father!

4 The Work Horse did confide in us that W o C had some misgivings about the continuing validity of the Cogerson $100 million as a bench mark. However a nice rounded $100 million still sounds the best to me, of course Bruce adjusts all his actual grosses to the same base year so that no star/movie is disadvantaged in real terms whatever benchmark WH quotes, and un-Lensman-like devotees of stats will always have a sense of proportion and will know that whatever figure a movie earns it can still lose money if production costs are too steep.

5 So I’ll stick with The Big Boy on this one. In the 1963 Spencer Tracy comedy film Its Mad Mad [etc] World Phil Silvers to appease a burly truck driver who has been pursuing him with menace says when the group finds or think they’ve found a cache of loot and are discussing divvying up the money “One share for all of us but 2 shares for The Big Boy here.” I think I would have said “$100 million for The Big Boy here!”

    1. Hey Bob….two great comments.
      1. I like the comparison of Ladd and Cruise.
      2. Thanks for the kind words…as always they are appreciated.
      3. WoC, besides not agreeing that $100 million is not special anymore….has been thinking we need to raise the ceiling to $250 million….for maxing out the points when it comes to the box office section. Been resisting that for awhile.
      4. Funny stuff about the 6 million dollar man…..I just watched Ghost in the Shell last night…..I think Scarlett Johansson’s character could have been called the 6 Billion dollar woman….lol.
      5. Glad you like the attached photos included in the page.
Thanks for re-visiting one of our most popular pages…..6th most popular of the 1000+ pages and posts that can get views.
