14 thoughts on “1935 Top Box Office Movies

  1. This is indeed a massive list! After counting twice, I think I have seen 58 of the listed movies. There are a few movies starring favs Sylvia Sidney and Margaret Sullavan, though not in their best movies. Still, I like The Good Fairy and Mary Burns, Fugitive along with David Copperfield, Mark of the Vampire, Hands across the Table, Alice Adams, Top Hat, A Tale of 2 Cities, von Sternberg’s Crime and Punishment, I Found Stella Parish, Bordertown with Davis going mad in a very well acted courtroom scene, The Dark Angel with Oscar nominated Merle Oberon, the romantic Wedding Night, another flop for beautiful and talented Anna Sten, whose american career never took of, the wonderful Ruggles of Red Gap, with Charles Laughton, Mary Boland and ZaSu Pitts, One more Spring with a sweet performance by Janet Gaynor, Garbo’s Anna Karenina, the best Frankenstein movie ever, featuring Elsa Lanchester in what very likely is her most famous part, romantic Gary Cooper with Ida Lupino in one of her early Hollywood appearances in Peter Ibbetson, Remember last Night and the (in)famous Hepburn/Grant flop Sylvia Scarlett, that, like Bringing Up Baby, has been rediscovered in later years and has since earned minor cult status. I actually saw it on the big screen years ago while on holiday in Berlin.
Interesting to see the disappointing box office figures of alltime greats Hepburn, Davis, Stanwyck, Colbert in 1935, but then, their 1935 movies are hardly among their best films…exceptions granted! As always, I enjoyed this yearly review, and want to say thanks for all the work you put into this website to keep us entertained and informed 😉

    1. Hey LupinoHoF17….we are really happy about how this page turned out. If you would have told me in 2011….that at some point we would put together a 1935 movie page that had almost 200 movies…I would have told you that you were crazy…but that is what happened.

Yep, 1935 was not a great year for your favorites…Maureen and Sylvia. Charles Laughton had a very good 1935….3 movies in the Top 10…when looking at box office. I have not seen Ruggles of Red Gap….but I want to. I agree with you about Bride of Frankenstein…..Karloff does some excellent acting in that one. Every time I watch it…I hope the bride will like Big Frank….but it has not happened…yet….lol.

When Sylvia Scarlett flopped only Grant came out well in that one….he got some of his best reviews…..granted he was about to take off and become “Cary Grant”….a nice building block for him. Hepburn, Davis, Stanwyck, Colbert were starting to hear they were “box office poison” during this time….certainly a case of what have you done for me lately.

Thanks for the kind words about our website. It is starting to look like a professional website.

  2. Hey Flora
    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on 1935 movies.
    2. 46…..destroys me….I am at 12…..easily my worst tally count…with regards to these yearly reports.
    3. I fear my counts will continue to decrease as we work down to 1930.
    4. I have seen 7 of your favorite movies listed…..so at least I have been watching the right 12 movies…lol.
    5. Mutiny, Captain Blood and Bride of Frankenstein would be my favorites too.
    6. My first miss is #3 The Lives of Bengal Lancer….and my last hit is #96 Sylvia Scarlett….thank you Mr. Grant.
    7. Good feedback as always.

  3. These are the 184 1935 movies I have seen from December 1992 when I hit # 8000 viewed through December 2017. Lots of B westerns here for you fans. Pictures are listed followed by studio, stars if listed (XXX means not in Quinlan’s book of stars, though I added some others), date seen and source (TV channel, DVD or tape).

FN is First National which is the same as Warner Brothers. I saw Mutiny on the Bounty in 1979 at the Regency Revival theater in Manhattan.

  4. Let’s see…. I’ve seen 23 of the 172 films listed on the chart. Less than I thought.

I have 48 films from 1935 in my film collection and I’ve seen 30 of those.

My favorites from both charts include – Bride of Frankenstein, Captain Blood, Dante’s Inferno, G Men, Lives of a Bengal Lancer, Mad Love, Mark of the Vampire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mutiny on the Bounty, A Night at the Opera, The Raven, She, The 39 Steps, Top Hat and Werewolf of London.

Happy to see the Marx Bros topping the critics chart for the year, Night at the Opera is one of their very best films.

Also good to see Bride of Frankenstein doing so well on the box office chart, didn’t expect that. Must have been the biggest horror hit of it’s time.

Mutiny on the Bounty was the years biggie, half a billion adjusted worldwide gross is pretty impressive. Plus it won the Best Picture Oscar.

Another epic movie page Bruce, how do you do it? Amazing you could find the grosses on these 83 year old movies. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. As always thanks for the visit. 23 of my 172 movies listed…is good enough for third place….behind Dan’s massive total and Flora’s 46. My total is all the way down at 12. Even though this is a pretty massive page….it still only represents about 40% of the movies made. Obviously the additional 7 movies seen by you….would be in that 60%.

I have seen 7 of the ones you listed as your favorites. With Mutiny and the 39 Steps being in my Top 5 too. Yep the Marx Brothers have an all-time classic in A Night At the Opera. As for Bride of Frankenstein…..the power of Frankenstein….the first two were by far the best of the many Frank movies that came later.

Mutiny on the Bounty is one of the highest rated movies in our database. I thought this page turned out pretty impressive….all it took was 7 years, lots of hard work, some data exchanges and a couple of cross country trips to get all this information…..a piece of cake…lol. Good stuff as always.

  5. I have seen 46 movies from 1935.

The highest ranking movie I have seen is Mutiny on the Bounty.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Steamboat Round the Bend.

The lowest ranking film I have seen is Biography of a Bachelor Girl.

My Favourite movies from 1935 are:

    Mutiny on the Bounty
    Top Hat
    Bride of Frankenstein
    Captain Blood
    No More Ladies
    G-Men
    The Glass Key
    Roberta
    China Seas
    A Tale of Two Cities
