Alec Guinness in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1956)

This movie page looks at The Top Grossing Movies of 1957.   Currently when you type in the search words….”Top Grossing Movies of 1957″ you do not get much information.   So in an effort to get more information out there…we have decided to unlock our 1957 movie database vault and share the information we have collected over the years.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1957 (as listed on IMDB.com).  Obviously many movies made in 1956 earned box office dollars in 1957.  On the other side many movies made in 1957 made money in 1958 and later.  This page will looks at 155 Top Grossing Movies of 1957.  The movies are listed in a massive table that shows who starred in the movie, had much the movie grossed when it was released and how that gross means in today’s money.

Obviously this is not all of the 1957 movies…..but since our website is dynamic, ever time we add a 1957 movie….it will automatically be added to this page.

  1. I have seen 57 movies from 1957.

The highest rated film I have seen is Bridge on the River Kwai.

The highest rated film I have not seen is Old Yeller. I have always deliberately avoided this movie.

My top ten movies from 1957 are:

    Bridge on the River Kwai
    Witness For the Prosecution
    Gunfight at the OK Corral
    3:10 To Yuma
    Designing Woman
    12 Angry Men
    Silk Stockings
    Funny Face
    Pal Joey
    Don’t Go Near the Water

    1. Hey Flora
      1. 57 falls a little short of Steve’s 60. You don’t see that too much when it comes to classic tally counts.
      2. I have not seen all of Old Yeller either.
      3. I have seen 8 if your Top 10. Only missing Designing Women and Don’t Go Near the Water.
      4. Of the 8 I have seen….they are all great movies.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  2. 1 HI BRUCE Just one more to go for the 1950s and it’s beginning to look as if my private hope that the lot could be completed by Xmas might not be unrealistic so well done. For me of course it’s good to see Mr Mumbles doing so well in your charts with just one movie

2 One reason why Sayonara has always been of particular interest to me was that I attended the Northern Ireland premier of the film at the Ritz Belfast in early 1958 and Mr M’s leading lady in the movie, Miiko Taka, appeared personally on the stage to introduce the movie and she talked all the time about how wonderful ole Mumbles was. Certainly they would never have paid her paid her to come all the way here to say to us the kind of things Joel said about Mr. Mumbles!!

3 Other films on your table also evoke nostalgic memories for me of course and not least a bunch of your painstakingly listed B movies of that year such as Zero Hour, The Tall Stranger, Decision at Sundown and Mr Corey. My one disappointment? – Big Jeff not being given any credit for the western Drango where he was not only THE star and played the title role but also actually produced the movie – a sacrilege on your part which would perhaps be only equalled by somebody not mentioning The Boy Wonder’s connection with Citizen Kane!

4 I see that you have adopted Steve’s practice of giving us value for money. HE announces a Top 30 and lists 32 films and you have given us 1957 with your 1st table and then 1956 with your 25 earners table. However if anybody could pile up grosses retrospectively before a film was even released it would have been Mr Mumbles in the 1950s !! Seriously though I most welcome your 1957 review in its entirety and it was nice to see an updated WW gross for Sayonara as well as global stats for a number of other flicks

    1. Hey Bob
      1. Well….since your comment …..the last 1950s page has been done….so Merry Christmas….lol.
      2. Good background on your memories of Sayorna.
      3. I will have to revisit Drango and correct the issue.
      4. The last table should be correct now…as it should be the top box office stars of 1957.
      5. Good stuff.

  3. Hello Bruce,
one of my fav year, but after 20 films i stoped to count, because, time is going so fast…
    I have seen the first five, my fav is Witness..but i like the 4 others too and after of course one my fav is Jailhouse Rock because Presley, the king of rock and roll;
Bruce for Jet Pilot Sternberg is the Director and it is Janet Leigh who is the leadind lady
it is just an observation because usually you give the actors in that segment
    Good to see Darnell in Zero Hour with Andrew, a film i never saw but i read somewhere it is one of the first film catastrophe in a plane;
    and may be, but i am not sure because, memory, FOX start a project , in 1957 to remake the Blue Angel with Monroe in the part of Dietrich, Lola Lola, the project was after The prince and the show girl, but may be it was in 1958;
    anyway a very good page
    bye
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre
      1. Thanks for your count of 20…….life is indeed is going very fast.
      2. Witness for the Prosecution….is a classic….what a performance by Dietrich.
      3. I should probably switch out Leigh for Sternberg…..at the time I did not have a Leigh page.
      4. Zero Hour is one of the first airplane disaster movies…..but High and the Mighty came a few years before that movie.
      5. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this great year in movies.

  4. [Whistles Colonel Bogey March] 152 films, ranked and rated with box office grosses too, what more could any movie fan want? 🙂

Let’s see I’ve seen… 60 of these, probably more, I wish I was keeping tabs like Dan. Looking at my datafiles I have 82 films from 1957 in my movie collection. I haven’t seen them all.

Favorites include – The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Enemy Below, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Incredible Shrinking Man, Jailhouse Rock, Loving You, Monolith Monsters, Night of the Demon, Paths of Glory, Quatermass II, Run of the Arrow, Silk Stockings, Sweet Smell of Success, The Tall T, 3:10 to Yuma, The Tin Star, 20 Million Miles to Earth, Witness for the Prosecution, Zero Hour, The Mysterians, The Seventh Seal and Throne of Blood.

Good to see Kwai topping the UMR chart, one of my all time favorite war movies. 12 Angry Men tops the critics chart, a good film but not one I watch often.

I haven’t seen A Face in the Crowd, Three Faces of Eve or Peyton Place.

Shocked to see Peyton Place was a massive hit in the US, more than half a billion dollars adjusted, whoa! Kwai in second place with nearly $500m adjusted, impressive.

Another epic movie page Bruce, excellent work. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the feedback.
      2. 60 seen….that almost doubles my total of 35….and even tops Flora’s total of 57….congrats…you rarely top Flora when it comes to classic pages like this one.
      3. Lots of great movies listed in your favorites….my favorites would also include Paths of Glory, Gunfight At The OK Coral and Night of the Demon….with Witness for the Prosecution being up there as well.
      4. Yep Kwai…..is a Top 10 movie in the entire database…..so it was not surprising to see it in first place.
      5. Peyton Place….got a sequel….and then a television series…that series ran for years…and starred the young’ins Mia Farrow and Ryan O’Neal.
      6. Thanks for the compliment and the vote up.

  5. Hello Bruce,

17 ! It’s the number pf movies of this list I’ve seen. Only 17….

I love River Kwai, Ok Corral, 3:10 for Yuma, Witness For Prosecution and Frankenstein. The last was not a success in France, unlike Ok Corral and of course River Kwai (one of the biggest of all-time in France).

Only few films of this list were sucessful in France. Among them, Raintree Country and Farwell To Arms.

Can you tell me where did you thind the box-office number of Night of The Demon, please ?

    1. Hey Laurent.
      1. Thanks for the tally count. 17….well I have seen….counting…..35. More than I thought it would be.
      2. River Kwai is one of my dad’s Top 5 movies…..it is probably time to re-visit that one.
      3. Good to know that Rock Hudson’s Farewell To Arms was a success in France.
      4. As for Night of the Demon… got that from a book….not 100% sure which one….but I would guess one of the three Danny Peary Cult Movie books.
Thanks for checking out this 1957 movie page.
