2016 Movies

The big Oscar winners this year were La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea

Want to know the best 2016 Movies?  How about the worst 2016 Movies?  Curious about 2016 Movies did at the box office or which 2016 Movies picked up the most Oscar® nominations and Oscar® wins? Need to know which 2016 Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.  We have been doing a yearly page since 2011….the previous winners were 2011’s The Help, 2012’s Argo, 2013’s Gravity, 2014’s American Sniper, 2015’s The Martians and 2016’s…to be determined.

So what will you find on this page? …You get lots of stats on 2016 Movies.  In the following table you can sort the movies any way you want.  Want to know the current Top Domestic Box Office Hit of 2016?  Just hit the sort button on that column and you will see Finding Dory in first place.   Want to know which movies got the best and worst reviews of the year?  Just hit the sort button on that column and you will see Moonlight in first place and Meet The Blacks in last place. You can also sort by Ultimate Movie Ranking scores…which combines box office, reviews and award.   Sorting that column shows Zootopia at the top and Meet The Blacks at the bottom of the rankings.

Any movie that has earned over $5 million dollars in domestic box office gross is included in the rankings.  There are a few that earned less than $5 million that made the rankings…but they have a popular star attached to them….like Tom Hanks in A Hologram For A King.    We will be updating this page regularly until probably next March….as we determine the 2016 Movie Of The Year.  Just so you know.  A movie maxes out earning points in the box office category…when it reaches the $200 million domestic mark.

Zootopia currently has the number one spot....but not thinking it is going to get much Award love at the end of the year
Zootopia has a spot in the Top 5…can it hold that spot over the next few months?

2016 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

    • Sort 2016 Movies by the star or stars of the 2016 Movies listed in table
    • Sort 2016 Movies by domestic box office grosses
    • Sort 2016 Movies by wordwide box office grosses
    • Sort by how 2016 Movies were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
    • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each 2016 Movies received….this column will remain 00 / 00 until next February.
    • Sort 2016 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Our personal favorite movie of 2016 (so far at least) is Deadpool and sits in 4th place after 5 months.

  1. Hi Bruce you beat me by one, I’ve seen 47 of the 150 films currently listed, most recently Dr. Strange, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

But it has not been a good year for movies IMO and many of them despite all the hype have spectacularly backfired, The BFG, Inferno, Ben-Hur, Warcraft, God of Egypt, The Huntsman, Alice 2, Independence Day 2 – the list goes on.

Hopefully 2017 will be a better movie year.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for checking out this massive update….it had been months since the last time I updated it. So you are only one behind 1…..so I guess we are watching current movies at roughly the same pace. You are 100% correct it has been a rough year for some mega budget movies that pretty got ignored by the public. I think 2016 still has some kick left….Rogue One might be huge. Thanks for the feedback.

  2. I have seen 48 of these movies….almost at 33%. That includes the 13 that I have seen in theaters. The 13 I have seen in theaters….can you tell I have kids?

    The Jungle Book
    Zootopia
    Captain America: Civil War
    Deadpool
    The BFG
    Arrival
    Sully
    The Secret Life of Pets
    Sausage Party
    Finding Dory
    Trolls
    Star Trek: Beyond
    Deepwater Horizon

  3. The most prolific actors of this year 2016 (5 or more roles) by Movie Insider. Do you See Joseph Olivieri or Marc Falvo or Cynthia LeBlanc (all high on the Oracle of Bacon in uncredited parts) on the last 3 years lists? James Franco 11 pictures this year, what does he think this is , 1935.

    11 James Franco
8 Michael Shannon, Danny Glover, J.K. Simmons
    7 Kristen Stewart
6 Aaron Paul, Ben Foster, Ewan McGregor, Ethan Hawke, Isla Fisher, Anna Kendrick, Jesse Eisenberg
5 Zoey Deutch, Kate McKinnon, Matthew McConaughey, Keegan Michael-Key, Corey Stoll, Nick Kroll, Jeremy Irons, Toby Jones, Gal Gadot, Haley Bennett, Amy Adams, Laura Linney, Maria Bello, Octavia Spencer

Outside of Nick Kroll I heard of everyone on the list.

      1. I knew Zoey and Kroll…but Bennett & Michael Key escape me…I probably need to get this page updated….I am probably 4 months behind….not thinking I will be doing a 2017 one….until the year is over. Thanks for visit and comment.

        1. Bennett just played the owner of the ranch being defended in Magnificent Seven and is also in Girl on the Train. Michael Key was in Keanu that terrible kitten comedy back in May.

          1. Hey Dan..excellent information….I am sure now that I know who they are…I will start seeing them everywhere now. 🙂

    1. Wow is James Franco a busy man or what? I agree that output is stuff I see when I am researching stuff in the 1930s. Shannon and Simmons are my favorite character actors working now…they make any movie better. Evan McGregor’s 6 was pretty quiet….I think I can only place 2 currently…meaning 4 unknown to me movies….I find that shocking. Danny Glover at 8? I am impresses he has been that busy. Good stuff here…thanks for sharing.

  4. Saw x-men – apocalyps last night and give it two thumbs up, I like it. I really do not understand the reviews, the bad reviews make no sense at all. Most bad reviews state the many characters and lack of screen time for some, well captain america had a lot of characters and felt jumbled with some characters getting only a few lines, and yet that got better ratings? Pathetic disney and pathetic bad critics.

    1. Hey Quinton…thanks for the mini-review of X-Men 9………it seems audiences like this one better than they did Batman vs Superman. I think it will end up pretty well….when it is all said and done. Thanks for the visit.

  5. Hi

I haven’t seen many 2016 releases yet, I’m a bit like Flora, I prefer to wait until the award season. Although there’s no surprises that there’s a lot of franchise movies out. 300m seems to be the magic number they’re all hitting. One movie I’m really looking forward to is Finding Dory. Nemo was so good and Pixar have such a great track record on sequels. Toy Story 2 and 3 being perfect examples. One film that does puzzle me is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The reviews were awful and yet it has done reasonably well. To be honest I was never fussed on the original and didn’t see why it done so well.
I recently watched a documentary about Louis B Mayer, I wonder what he, Jack Warner and Sam Goldwyn would think of today’s Hollywood. 70 years ago they were the lords of they surveyed. I don’t think they would even recognise today’s movies. But one thing hasn’t changed, as long as movies are making money, they’ll be made.
But you can’t help but wonder are they going to run out of franchises, I think the idea of star power is dead in the water.
Ps. Seen a trailer for BFG, looks great.

    1. Hey Chris.
      1. Award season is right around the corner.
      2. It will be real interesting to see how the awards shape up this year. I am betting the Academy is going to be over compensating for their “all white” issue they have had the last two years.
      3. I will be seeing Finding Dory myself…..it is very very high on my kids list of movies to see….thankfully it looks like we are going to escape having to see The Angry Birds Movie in theaters.
      4. As for My Greek Wedding 2…..I think it did moderately well…..but compared to the original it did almost nothing….but the first was like catching lightening in a bottle….hard to duplicate that massive success.
      5. I think Warner and Goldwyn would drive themselves crazy….as they would not have nearly the power they had back then. Stars would run them versus the way they ran stars back then.
      6. Seems like there are only three types of movies with wide releases today…..computer animation, superhero, and sequels/remakes….any original idea seems doomed for art houses or straight to home entertainment.
      7. BFG does look good….Spielberg still has it.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
