Possibly Interesting Facts About Anne Bancroft

  1.  Anna Maria Louisa Italiano was born in the Bronx, New York City in 1931.
2.   After appearing in a number of live television dramas under the name Anne Marno, Anne Bancroft was told (by Darryl F. Zanuck) to change her surname for her film debut in 1952’s Don’t Bother to Knock.

3.   Anne Bancroft made her Broadway debut opposite Henry Fonda in 1958’s Two for the Seesaw.  She won a Tony® for the role.  In 1960 she win another Tony®….this time for playing Annie Sullivan, the young woman who teaches the child Helen Keller to communicate in The Miracle Worker

4.   In 1962, Anne Bancroft got to play Annie Sullivan on the big screen.  This time she won a Best Actress Oscar® for The Miracle Worker.

5.  Anne Bancroft and The Graduate.  (1) Bancroft was only 6 years older than Dustin Hoffman when they made the movie.  (2) The movie’s line “Plastics.” was voted as the #42nd best movie quote by the American Film Institute.  (3) In his review, Roger Ebert called the songs by Simon & Garfunkel “unmemorable”…he got that one wrong.  (4) Bancroft said that for many years after doing the movie, young men would tell her that she was the first woman they had sexual fantasies about.  (5) When looking at the all-time adjusted box office hits….The Graduate is currently the 22nd biggest movie.

6.   Anne Bancroft got the Mrs. Robinson role and made film history in 1967’s The Graduate……here are some of the other actresses that were considered for or interested in the role:  Claire Bloom, Joan Crawford, Doris Day, Angie Dickinson, Sophia Loren, Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth, Susan Hayward, Anouk Aimée, Jennifer Jones, Patricia Neal, Deborah Kerr, Eva Marie Saint, Rosalind Russell, Simone Signoret, Jean Simmons, Lana Turner, Eleanor Parker, Anne Baxter, and Shelley Winters. 6A.  Since we have a list of possible Mrs. Robinsons…..how about a list of actors that were considered for the Dustin Hoffman role?  Warren Beatty, Keir Dullea, Robert Duvall, Harrison Ford, Charles Grodin, George Hamilton, Albert Finney, Gene Wilder, Steve McQueen, Jack Nance, Anthony Perkins, Robert Redford, Robert Wagner, and Jack Nicholson were all considered for the part of Benjamin Braddock.  I think a Harrison Ford/Joan Crawford casting would have been very interesting.

  1. THIS POST HAS BEEN COPIED FROM STEVE’S VIDEO PAGE AS I WROTE IT OF COURSE IN THE “BAD OLD DAYS” WHEN WE DIDN’T HAVE A COGERSON PAGE !!

    November 30, 2017 at 6:11 am
1 STEVE: It is perhaps ironic that before Mia Farrow you profiled Anne Bancroft because one of Anne’s most admired roles by critics was as the woman who had an obsession with bearing children in The Pumpkin Eater. Mia Farrow seems to have the same fondness for them as she has 14 children although 10 of them are adopted.

2 I am not over-familiar with her films but am of course aware of Rosemary’s Baby, The Great Gatsby [1974] and her collaboration with Woody Allen, Hannah and her Sisters being one of the big successes of that collaboration.

3 Because of the gaps in my knowledge your video was enlightening for me as well as entertaining. My pick of a fine set of posters are Dandy in Aspic [with the unforgettable Laurence Harvey] September, Alice, Full Circle, See No Evil, Broadway Danny Rose, both ones for Purple Rose of Cairo, and Death on the Nile, perhaps the movie in which I most enjoyed a Farrow performance [as the villainess of the piece]. Good reproduction of Time cover.

4 All of the stills were interesting but on balance I most liked (1) solo of Mia with camera (2) Her with Dustin (3) Shadows and Fog (4) sleeping with Liz – lucky girl!(5) an unusual one of Mia with long hair (6) and of course any still with Sir Maurice is always welcome.

5 I welcome this video as a film buff should always be interested in any woman who was married to Sinatra for 2 years and lived with Allan Stewart Konigsberg for 13 years but I thought the presentation was worth a 97% rating in its own right. All that’s missing now to complete the package are some stats on Mia’s movies but of course that’s not your department! Nice philosophical opening quote.

  2. HI BRUCE

1 Great that you’ll be able to fix the error because as the saying goes one wouldn’t want an otherwise perfect “ship” to be spoilt for a “ha’porth of tar.”

2 Whilst Anne’s entire page is of great interest to me I was particularly keen for nostalgic reasons to see the earnings quoted for 7 of her minor 1950s movies –

Treasure of the Golden Condor/New York Confidential
    Nightfall/Gorilla at Large/The Restless Breed
Tonight we Sing/The Girl in Black Stockings.

Overall these have an adjusted domestic gross of just $216.6 million [average $31] million but I liked them

2 You and Steve agree on 3 of Anne’s Top 5 films artistically and I was slightly surprised at you making the Pumpkin Eater as low as 13th for Review whereas it was Steve’s No 5. However you have given the film a 71% rating which as you say isn’t bad and I take your point about it not being possible to include all good films in a Top 5. As Rufus Ryker in the 1953 classic western put it “Be Reasonable Shane – there are just so many hands in a deck of cards”

    1. Hey Bob. Glad you enjoyed our Anne Bancroft 1950s movies. A few of her movies from that time frame escaped us…as we were unable to get box ? office information on those movies.

Oh the joys and pitfalls of a Top 5. The greater the actor the more great movies fighting for that 5th spot. Makes me curious what some thespian’s 6th highest rated movie are. Good stuff.

  3. Hey Dan
    1. Yet another classic actress that goes from a good spot in the rankings in 2000 to off the charts today.
    2. That always seems sad…..but making the list in the first place is a great accomplishment.
    3. Good to see three of her co-stars still in the Top 10.
    4. 39 Oscar winners is good…but it continues to show how awesome Michael Caine’s total is.
    Thanks for sharing this info.

  4. Hi

She’ll forever be remembered for Mrs Robinson in The Graduate. I can’t believe that they considered Doris Day. Crawford would have been far too old. I once read that Ava Gardner had been considered. Of all the names on the list, I think she would have been the best. One of Anne Bancroft’s best movies is 84 Charing Cross. It’s sad that it made no money because it was a great story.
To Have and Have Not was a big surprise. I don’t really like remakes but I thought this was an exception. She was such a wonderful actress, although very shy. She appeared on a British chat show in the 80s and it was just awful. She couldn’t cope. It’s probably on youtube with Terry Wogan.
Another favourite would be Garbo Talks, they definitely don’t make them like her anymore.

    1. Hey Chris
      1. Thanks for the feedback on Anne Bancroft.
      2. You are 100% correct….when said passed away it was “The Graduate’s Mrs Robinson has passed away”…..only later did it mention her Oscar winning role in The Miracle Worker.
      3. I like 84 Charing Road too….but not thinking young adults had any interest in that story at all…which is why nobody saw it in theaters.
      4. Good thoughts on To Be or Not to Be….she appeared in many of her husband’s movies…but this was the only one that was not a cameo.
      5. I will have to check out that video…You Tube has everything.
      Good stuff.
