  1. THE SATURDAY ESSAY
1 Let’s forget about Joel for a day as the Work Horse can produce excellent stuff without Hirsch’s help and guidance and the recent new page on the talented Bryan Cranston proves
that point. The following reproduction from Wiki about apparent inaccuracies in Trumbo about Eddie Robinson may interest other regulars of this site who liked Bruce’s Cranston page.

“The film depicts actor Edward G. Robinson betraying his friend Dalton Trumbo and others by naming them as communists before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Robinson did testify four times before the committee and eventually stated that he had been a dupe of communist front organizations, but he never named anyone, friend or foe, as a communist.”

2 For me there is a ring of truth in the Wiki claim because according to Robinson in his autobiography even after his appearances before them the Committee were still determined to bring him down and only the support of DeMille with whom he shared Jewish descendency saved him. If Eddie had given the Committee everything they wanted why would they still wish to destroy him? In the movieTrumbo if I recall correctly it’s the Duke who gets Hopper and the more hawkish ones off Eddie’s back.

3 n On the Waterfront longshoreman Terry Malloy initially refuses to testify against the gangster mob who control the docks as he doesn’t want to be a “stool pigeon” but later develops a social conscious and does testify. Historians reckon that Elia “Gadge” Kazan, who drew derision for testifying before the Committee, made that movie to demonstrate that in certain situations it was justifiable to testify against others with whom you have bonds. Few fair-minded people would probably disagree with that as a general principle but as I have long been an admirer of Edward G as both a star and a private person it pleases me to believe that Eddie behaved as his conscience dictated was appropriate in HIS circumstances though I don’t underestimate the fear factor operating in those times

  3. Thank you, thank you. That was very quick. My two favorite Cranston movies are Wakefield and The Infiltrator. I would give the edge to a The Infiltrator. He is proving he can carry a movie. Not sure he will ever get out of the shadow of Breaking Bad, but he is off to a good start. I have seen 12 of these movies. Which means I have lots more to watch. Thank you again. You doing this request makes me feel pretty special.

    1. Hey Helakoski….you are very welcome. Your support has been greatly appreciated….especially since you do not seem to be a big classic fan….so it was the least I could do for you. As for The Infiltrator…I agree…that movie blew me away. The wedding scene is amazing….especially when Benjamin Bratt shows up.

A tally count? Awesome! So that is 20 for me, 17 for Steve and 12 for you. Glad you like this requested page.
