Hurricane Matthew has taken the power and the internet. Feel like I am living in the stone ages.
Reading encyclopedia. Interesting fact……Bette Davis is listed in the encyclopedia and Joan Crawford is not. Seems like that is a good argument for people on the side of Bette being the more important actress. WoC says I am burning up her data. Will be back when the power comes back.
HI BRUCE
1 I’ve experienced Hurricane Flora so I know what you must be going through ! Davis fans shouldn’t get too excited about that encyclopedia as “One swallow doesn’t make a summer.” You could go to a different source and Bette wouldn’t be mentioned though as each was undeniably a great star in her own right any source that doesn’t mentioned both should maybe be questioned. Also as your own site has demonstrated with Davis/Crawford interest in one or other of these two can fluctuate back and forward As compilation of various sources will always be prone to elements of subjectivity experts can disagree about the historical importance of individual performers. For example Time magazine listed Chaplin, Monroe, Sinatra and Brando as the greatest movie stars of the 20th Century and there was no mention of the likes of Duke; whereas another historical journal that I saw recently and was recommended to me as “authoritative” didn’t mention Frankie but listed the Duke and Mary Pickford above Brando. I don’t think the I could seriously quarrel with either lists.
2 The experts on International Movie Database have currently on that site no fewer than 5 varied lists that rank all time great actors for example two earlier ones:
1/Nicholson
2/Brando
3/DeNiro
4/Pacino
5/Day-Lewis
1/DeNiro
2/Nicholson
3/Hanks
4/Brando
5/DeCaprio
And their most updated one:
1/Chaplin
2/Brando
3/Nicholson
4/Day-Lewis
5/Hanks
3. It would not therefore surprise me if some descendent of a branch of the Cogerson clan got editorial control of Time magazine somewhere in the future and revised that magazine’s 100 Greatest People list to show that the 3 greatest stars of all time were Willis, Grant and Sir Maurice Micklewhite ! Sir M is actually 14th on the list headed by Nicholson. Hope you’re fully functional again a.s.a.p. BOB
Hey Bob.
1. Things are back to normal….kids are back to school….area is cleaned up….trees have been removed….but it has been a fun 3 days.
2. I agree that the encyclopedia does not prove anything….but it was interesting….that was a 2010 publication….at some point….Crawford was in the books….but at some point a decision was made to boot Joan out.
3. As I stated on another comment….to me they will forever be linked together….and they are two of the greatest ever….deciding who was better will never be answered….heck I know friends who still argue that BetaMax was better than VHS…lol.
4. I think Time has made a great list for sure.
5. As for the IMDb list….it is one that will changing forever….DeNiro of the 1970s was awesome…the DeNiro since has been lots of hits and misses…with the misses far outweighing the hits.
6. I look forward to getting control of Time…and getting them straight…lol.
As always…thanks for the comments….they are greatly appreciated.
1 Glad things are back to normal. Friends of ours were out there at the time so we were worried about EVERYBODY.
2 Can we ever take any list as definitive? For example Elvis was not included in the TIME 100 Greatest people of the 20th Century list and I always thought that if Frankie, Bud, Charlie and Marilyn were there then Elvis should have been too and sure enough the executives who were responsible for the final fine tuning of the list admitted recently that it had been a mistake to exclude Elvis but it’s bit late now, though I suppose we could comfort ourselves by unofficially accepting that there were 101 Greatest People – no make that 102 as I’m personally going to include Archibald Alexander Leach !
3 You may remember that in the mid 70s there was a very successful TV series called the 6 Million Dollar Man starring Lee Majors. Well I wonder if we should perhaps tell TV executives that the time has now come for the 8 Million Views Man?
Hey Bob…living by the beach for most of my life….this was pretty tame…..just inconvenient as hell. A list is made so people can argue about it….the perfect bar conversation starter. As much as I love Roger Ebert his Top 100 of all-time would be nothing like my Top 100. Speaking of which….thinking it is time to update My Top 50…..the last time I made a Top 50 was back in 1988. Just thinking about that makes me ask….is it my My Favorite 50…..My Best 50 or My Most Entertaining 50?
I used to watch the Six Million Dollar Man all the time….I even had a Six Million Dollar Man lunchbox. I remember the Bigfoot episode like it was yesterday. So I am happy to be associated with him…..thanks for visit.
I decided to start facebook again mostly to keep up with family members, so I can now follow the closed actor groups as well.
But I must regulate my hours as I do need to stay offline at night.
Tonight is the start of TCM’s look at Slapstick comedy – two nights a week.
The series will include an online course just like there was for westerns last month.
The Slapstick schedule will be hosted by Greg Proops.
Hey Flora….I really enjoy some of those Facebook clubs….my favorites would be the Joan Crawford Chat Room and some John Wayne ones. 🙂
Gene Wilder schedule for Septmeber 29th: order: Pacific time zone;
5pm : Role Model (conversation): new to me
6:15pm: Young Frankenstein
8:15pm: Role Model will re-air
9:30pm: Start the Revolution Without Me – new to me
11:15pm: The Frisco Kid
1:30am: Bonnie and Clyde.
Hey Flora….sounds like September 29th will be a great day to finally see Start The Revolution Without Me….thanks for sharing the schedule.
By the way – if anyone is wondering about the youtube videos I mentioned to Cogerson and Steve Lensman:
They are choir videos that were uploaded by the choir director – NOT me.
So if you are looking for Flora Robison’s youtube videos – there are none.
You will see that I am subscribed to three people. One is Bruce’s daughter, another is Steve Lensman for his movie poster art, and the third is a woman I met on Letterboxd who does a lot of videos she makes herself.
Thought I should clear that up.
Thanks for the information.
