  1. Wasn’t there a rumor that George Sanders killed Tyrone Power when they were shooting Solomon and Sheba and they dueled and Sanders sword did not have a rubber tip. Then they hired Yul Brynner to replace Tyrone and he wore a hairpiece but I digress.

My first memory of George Sanders was him being of the 3 Mr. Freeze’s on the Batman TV series in the 60’s. The others then were Eli Wallach and Otto Preminger.

You don’t have a George Sanders film that I have seen 5 times and I don’t see films usually more than once. That picture is 1967’s Good Times starring Sonny & Cher.

George is no longer on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. He was # 323 on the original list in 2000. These are the actors on the current list he appeared in a film with.

He had a brother in the movies too, Tom Conway. Both of them either played The Saint or the Falcon but I notice one title he’s in is The Falcon’s Brother so I guess they’re both in that one.

Don’t forget that classic Einer spielt falsch he made in 1966 with Audie Murphy.

While I’m putting this together I’m watching 1934’s Now and Forever which I’ve never seen, courtesy of TCM. It stars 3 actors you’ve done pages on, Gary Cooper, Carole Lombard and Shirley Temple.

    1. Dan

I have never heart anything about Sanders accidentally killing Power. The two men were close friends. They were filming a dual. Sanders was a rotten sword fighter, so his clumsiness forced a lot of retakes. The exhausted Power suffered a heart attack and died before he could be gotten to a hospital. It seems that Power was showing signs of heart problems before filming started. His physician apparently requested a full heart exam but Power refused. Power’s famous father also died young from a heart attack. From what I have read, Sanders was devastated by his role in this tragedy.

  2. I have seen 24 of the movies you have listed. I have seen more that are not yet listed.

    My favourites include

    Rebecca
    The Picture of Dorian Gray
    While the City Sleeps
    Confessions of a Nazi Spy
    The Moon and Sixpence
    Jungle Book
From the Earth to the Moon
    All About Eve
    Her Cardboard Lover
    The Son of Monte Cristo

Of the films not listed, my favourite is Death of a Scoundrel.

  3. Cogerson

The greatest rotter of them all. Of course, everyone remembers his cynical cad turns in Rebecca, All About Eve, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, but there was another side to Sanders. Check out the musical Call Me Madam in which he plays Ethel Merman’s romantic interest and really slathers on the suave charm. He also gets to display an excellent singing voice.
Two comments–20th Century Fox seemed to me to have had generally bland leading men, but their “character” men were striking–Sanders, Vincent Price, Clifton Webb, Laird Cregar, Cesar Romero, and even Peter Lorre for a short while.
And after listening to Sanders sing, I wonder if he was considered for Henry Higgins? He might have been the best possible casting. I have read that he was the original first choice for the male lead in South Pacific, but backed out at the last minute and was replaced by Ezio Pinza. He would have been perfect in that role also.

  4. Cynicism is generally an unappealing quality, but George Sanders made it distinctive and even likable. He brought polish to ordinary dialogue, and when he had witty lines, as in All About Eve, he achieved greatness.

  5. Going away for the weekend….but Yerby’s request for a George Sanders page got me thinking I would show the Sanders movies in the database before heading up north. This will of course stop the dynamic page updates….hope everybody has a great weekend.
