Martin Landau Movies

Want to know the best Martin Landau movies?  How about the worst Martin Landau movies?  Curious about Martin Landau box office grosses or which Martin Landau movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Martin Landau movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which ones got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

After a pretty hectic Sunday I sat down in front of the computer….and the very first website I looked at, informed me that Oscar® winning actor Martin Landau had passed away today.   All my life, no matter how many movies Landau made…..he has always been….”the guy from North by Northwest”.  That movie was one of my late dad’s all-time favorite movies.  That has always given me a connection to Mr. Landau. His passing is a reminder of my dad’s passing.  Luckily Eva Marie Saint is still around.

Another Landau memory I have involves Samuel L. Jackson.  Back in 1994, I was blown away by Pulp Fiction.  When it came time for the Oscars®….I was convinced Jackson was going to be the Best Supporting Actor winner.  When they announced that Landau was the winner, here is what I remember yelling at the television.  “They ripped off Jackson…this is a load of crap…those Academy idiot voters do not know what the hell they are doing!”  Well…..I admit…..that I held a grudge for a few years…and refused to watch Landau in Ed Wood.   After a few years, I finally watched Ed Wood. I quickly realized that Landau’s performance as Bela Lugosi was sensational.  After the movie ended….I told myself….well I guess those Academy voters are not so dumb after all.

His IMDb page shows 177 acting credits from 1953-2018. This page will rank 31 Martin Landau (1928-2017) movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. This was all of the movies in our database….so we know 31 movies does not represent his entire movie career.

  1. Terrible internet where I am down in Key West, Florida. Saw Martin’s page Monday but only getting this out now. Martin was #69 on the 2016 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. Yes he worked with Eric Roberts and Arthur Tovey. These are all the people on the 2016 list Martin worked with.

    1. Hey Dan…..now them there some purty darn big lists…..lol. Goodness he worked with a lot of people. He still had three or four projects to go. The man was a very busy man. When I was dong the research on the page I noticed he made lots and lots of low budget, never heard of before movies. That had to help him with the Oracle score.

So he got to 38th in 2000…..pretty impressive. His total of 33 Oscar winners is lower than I thought it would be. I imagine being in Key West has lots of positives to help you overcome the negative of bad internet service….lol. Thanks for adding so much information to our Martin Landau page. RIP Mr. Landau.

  2. Hi

Sorry to hear that he died. He was a fantastic character actor. I remember watching a documentary about James Dean and he had been great pals. Ed Wood is one of my favourite movies of the 90’s and his performance was fantastic as Bela Lugosi and I’m so glad he won the Oscar. Another movie truly worth seeing is Crimes and Misdemeanors, playing the guilt ridden adulterer who murders his lover. Although it didn’t make a lot of money, it was one of Woody Allen’s best movies.

    1. Hey Chris….sad day indeed when I heard about his passing. Granted…..I think this is what we all hope for….a nice long life filled with a good family and a successful legacy lasting career. I agree 100% with you about Ed Wood. It has been years since I have seen Crimes and Misdemeanors….but his performance made a lasting impression. Good feedback as usual.

  3. Nice to see all the recognition Martin Landau is receiving on this site! Like some others, I first became familiar with Landau through television, in my case Space 1999, which I though was great as a kid. The series may have aged, but Landau’s performances in it have not. Rather than play the typical self-confident and ultra-cool commander a la Captain Kirk, Landau was quite human, emotional and sometimes bad-tempered.

In terms of his films, I agree he was outstanding as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood, and he is memorable in North By Northwest even though he does not have a big role there. But my favourite is his performance in Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanours (tough word to spell!). This is one of the rare films where Landau actually has a lead role and he plays his part so convincingly and with such emotional depth, one can understand how an apparently moral and well-adjusted man could commit a horrible crime and eventually learn to live his conscience afterwards – rather scary. I tend to think that character will not rest in peace, but I hope Mr. Landau does!

    1. Hey Phil. I vaguely remember Space 1999….but I do remember always thinking hey they bad guy from North by Northwest is playing a Captain Kirk role on that television show. I agree his role in North by Northwest is small….but very memorable. Not a sad day when his Leonard gets shot at the end of that classic movie.

I really like your final line in your comment…..very well put. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Mr. Landau. Rest in Peace.

  4. Hello everybody,
I am so Sorry to learn this News because for me Martin Landau stay and for ever he Is one of the Big stars of “Mission Impossible ” and The générique with the music and the shots with every actors in movement with Barbara and Linda and Greg …..one of the Best générique and when You Hear the music You are in the série!!!!!even now!!!
But in the maintime when i saw “North by the Norwesth ” one the Best film for me i recognize him Young and he Was one of the bad companion of the bad Guy against Cary …à very good part in a very very good film…but i dont know so much his movie carrière…

Bad News and bad Day for the movie Land….and the TV story…
    Good Day
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre. Sunday was not a good day with the passing of George Romero and Landau. I love his connection with Mission Impossible, Star Trek and Leonard Nimoy. Nimoy pretty much replaced Landau in the series….while Landau turned down the Mr. Spock role. Now sadly both are gone. Glad he got you to notice him on North by Northwest. We are in the same boat. RIP Mr. Landau.
