Michael Caine Movies

Want to know the best Michael Caine movies?  How about the worst Michael Caine movies?  Curious about Michael Caine box office grosses or which Michael Caine movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Michael Caine movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

My father introduced me to Michael Caine (1933-) in the movie The Man Who Would Be King. Since that 1975 movie I have followed his career very closely. I am probably one of the few people on Earth who not only saw The Swarm at the theater but also Beyond the Poseidon Adventure  at the theater. After years of struggling as an actor, in the mid 1960s he finally became a star with the British films Zulu, Alfie, and Ipcress Files.  Since then he has starred in roughly 90 movies.  Over the years Caine has received 6 Oscar® nominations and 2 Oscar® wins.  Not only is he still popular after a 60 plus year career but he is still appearing in some the biggest movies out there (Inception, Batman trilogy). Currently he is director Christopher Nolan’s good luck charm.  Caine has appeared in the last 7 Nolan films (he has an uncredited voice role in 2017’s Dunkirk).

His IMDb page shows over 170 acting credits since 1956.  In the table below, Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks his movies in 6 different sortable columns.  Television roles, cameos, shorts and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.

  1. Recognize the name M. Emmett Walsh, a character actor who Roger Ebert called one of his favorite actors. I did a study on the upper portion of I think the 2005 Oracle of Bacon list and M. there connected with more people on the list than anybody. So I wondered how many Oscar winners. Emmett is currently #115 and he has appeared with 55 Oscar winners.

    1. Jim Broadbent is one of the best supporting actors out there. I get a kick out of seeing him in movies that I had seen before…but did not notice him before….Time Bandits, Brazil, The Crying Game. It was the double whammy of Moulin Rouge and Topsy Turvy that finally got me to notice him. 38 is pretty impressive. It seems like he is slowing down somewhat…about 5 years ago…it seemed like he was in almost every movie made. Thanks for the list….I finally got around to doing this for Bruce Willis….he is at 25…and I did not include all of the Player cameos. That list can be found on my Willis page.

        1. Hey Dan….thanks for the additional names….I did not even look at his parts that were one or two day movies for him…..so I missed Schofiled, Coburn and Hiller…..then I was a snob….and only looked at the ones that got released in theaters in the USA….so I did not include Harden and Landau. I had Malden and Arkin just in different movies…..so the rest of the ones you mentioned gets his total up to 65…..70 if we add all of them. That might be hard to beat….but then again I thought the same thing with Marvin. Thanks for taking the time to come up with this list.

          1. Hey Dan…thanks for this impressive list. I give him credit for the 94….very impressive…..but….I like the tally from stars….or at least supporting characters…versus somebody that has to be searched for to find him in the movie. So in my mind we have two leaders…..Arthur and Sir Michael… pretty sure the Bacon lists have identified Arthur as the king of the extras…..not thinking anybody else will touch his total….thanks for sharing.

  4. Hey Lyle good to hear from another Caine fan. I am right there with in your comments as that is how I feel too. One of his worst ranked movies is Surrender with Sally Field (which has the wrong co-star in the table)…. I saw that one in theaters and liked it….though it appears not many others did….but Caine was fun to watch. Thanks for sharing all of your favorite Caine movies.

  5. Hello Bruce. I’ve always been a fan of Michael Caine ever since I saw “The Ipcress File” (1965). I loved “Alfie” (1966), “The Italian Job” (1969), “Too Late the Hero” (1970), “The Last Valley” (1971) ( I think Caine gave one of his best dramatic performances in The Last Valley), “Kidnapped” (1971), “X, Y and Zee” (1972), “Sleuth” (1972), “The Romantic Englishwoman” (1975), “The Man Who Would Be King” (1975) and many others. I went to see almost all of his films of the 1980’s on the big screen and though Caine himself commented that he made a lot of crap, I enjoyed all of them just because Michael Caine was in them. I think that Michael Caine is a naturally funny actor and does well in comedy as well as dramatic roles. I like Michael Caine.
