Michael Caine Movies

Want to know the best Michael Caine movies?  How about the worst Michael Caine movies?  Curious about Michael Caine box office grosses or which Michael Caine movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Michael Caine movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

My father introduced me to Michael Caine (1933-) in the movie The Man Who Would Be King. Since that 1975 movie I have followed his career very closely. I am probably one of the few people on Earth who not only saw The Swarm at the theater but also Beyond the Poseidon Adventure  at the theater. After years of struggling as an actor, in the mid 1960s he finally became a star with the British films Zulu, Alfie, and Ipcress Files.  Since then he has starred in roughly 90 movies.  Over the years Caine has received 6 Oscar® nominations and 2 Oscar® wins.  Not only is he still popular after a 60 plus year career but he is still appearing in some the biggest movies out there (Inception, Batman trilogy). Currently he is director Christopher Nolan’s good luck charm.  Caine has appeared in the last 7 Nolan films (he has an uncredited voice role in 2017’s Dunkirk).

His IMDb page shows over 170 acting credits since 1956.  In the table below, Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks his movies in 6 different sortable columns.  Television roles, cameos, shorts and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.

  1. 1 Years ago a popular magazine ran a series called “Where are They Now” which tracked down celebrities who had once been prominent but who had for years either stopped performing or else had been relegated in their careers.

2 I was reminded of that series when I visited a local art house to watch an entertaining but minor film called Brooklyn [2015] about an Irish girl who immigrates to NY and up popped an aged Julie Walters in the small role of the girl’s landlady. Julie has of course worked steady in movies and TV since the mid 70s and has been critically acclaimed from time to time; but it struck me that at least in terms of major stardom she never seems to have fulfilled the promise of those exciting days when she was basking in the glory of being Sir Maurice’s co-star in Educating Rita (1983)

3 I experienced similar sentiments last night when I watched Return to Sender** (2014) starring Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike and in a supporting role as Pike’s grizzled old father was Nick Nolte. Nick like Julie has worked steadily over the years but his appearance in Return to Sender was a far cry from his golden cinematic years 1977-1991 when he was in such hits as The Deep,48 Hrs, Down and Out in Beverly Hills and Prince of Tides. Indeed the latter in 1991 was probably the last film in which he had a starring role AND which was a major box office hit that crashed the Cogerson domestic $100 mil barrier .

4 Sad. Where Are You Now Julie Christie, Melanie Griffith and Theresa Russell?

** Reviewed on Letterboxd where it gets a mixed reception. Personally whilst it was not great I liked it, found Pike one of the most appealing actresses I’ve seen in some time, and enjoyed Nick despite his limited contribution. Three stars !!

    1. Hey Bob…not sure how I missed this comment…especially on one of my favorites.
      1. Where Are They Now sounds like an interesting show
      2. Julie Walters started off strong with Educating Rita (one of Caine’s best performances) but she quickly moved to supporting roles…now she is known as one of the teachers in the Harry Potter movies.
      3. I have seen Return To Sender…and I agree with your review. Yep Nolte has slowed down…though I enjoyed him and Redford in A Walk In The Woods….with Nolte playing the Newman role.
      4. Looks like 1991/92 was the last Nolte carrying a movie to box office glory…as Prince of Tides and Cape Fear are the last leading role hits for him.
      5. I just watched a horrible Melanie Griffith movie called Tempo…it was sad seeing her in such a bad movie.
Sorry for the delay in commenting back 🙂

      1. BRUCE

1 No problem and of course I am always interested in feedback from you on any Sir Maurice topic.

2 Indeed I have a post backlog of my own now and hope to field comments over the next few days on Abbott and Costello and Grable; and I’ve also been viewing Steve’s marvellous video.

        BOB.

  2. NEWSFLASH

1 Maurice Joseph Micklewhite has announced today that he has legally changed his name from the foregoing to his stage name.

2 The reason is that when he was passing through airports the security staff knew him for the Hollywood Great that he has become and yet his passport showed him to be Maurice Joseph Micklewhite.

3 This threw a spanner in the works and the bureaucratic confusion caused long delays in Maurice’s security clearance.

4 So today the name of Maurice Joseph Micklewhite has vanished forever in all official documents and is replaced in law by the acting name of the legendary Hollywood star that he is.

    1. Hey Bob.
      1. Thanks for sharing that information….I had not heard that before….and I consider myself a fan…..guess I am going to have turn in my Sir Maurice Micklewhite fan club card….lol.
      2. I imagine security today compared to when he started traveling so much…50 plus years ago…has drastically changed.
      3. I liked that he had kept his legal name….times change.
Thanks again for sharing the news.

      1. 1 From what he was saying in the press release it was quite a farce. The security guards knew him and in fact would often shout “Hi Michael.” but because his passport showed a different name from his travel tickets which said Michael Caine they couldn’t let him immediately through without going through some rigmarole or other.

2 He is one of those stars who seem to have support across a number of age groups. You obviously like him; he appeals to 70 somethings such as I; and my 10 year old grandson is fond of him because he plays Alfred in the Batman franchise.

3 I used to attend pub quizzes in Belfast and the character who organised them was a movie buff who would ask all kinds of off-beat film questions when the movies section of the quiz came on. One such question was: Why did Larry Olivier want to kill Michael Caine in Sleuth?

        BOB

        1. Hey Bob…..I can imagine the craziness of the situation. I can see the security guards….”Sorry Sir Michael….can we get you anything?…..love your work….this is a proud day…..I can’t wait to tell my wife I met you….I wish I could let you on the plane…..but.” I agree he is well liked by all generations….which is why I put him ahead of Sir Sean Connery…..his legacy will last a lot longer…simply because the younger kids today will remember Alfred…Inception. Movie trivia in a bar….love it. I used to do that in a video store I worked at….this was in the 1980s and video stores were huge…I would jump up on the counter and ask movie trivia….with the winner getting a free rental coupon. Oh those were the days. It was so crowded on the weekend….we had to have about 10 people checking out movies…and we still had lines. Now I get my movies from a RedBox….and I feel so alone…lol.

      2. AFTERNOON BRUCE!

1 Seen your Letterboxd review of Peeper and although the title put me off before and I never realised Sir M was in it I think I’ll give it a go if I can acquire a copy.

2 Watched Steve’s video before you took it away again and was most impressed with the many interesting stats, some stunning images and the mumble-free soundtrack with a haunting musical score – know where that came from?

3 The video illustrated to me why you are so impressed with Jennifer Lawrence’s box office; and I see also that Waterworld (1995) which was castigated as a flop in its day grosses $265 mil nearly a quarter of a century ago – big money in today’s dollars

4 The video is well worth a second viewing – this time with notebook in hand !! – so maybe you’ll run it again or provide a link – I thought you had given us one but I can’t trace it.

        BOB

        1. Hey Bob.
          1. If you like Sir Michael I think you will like Peeper…..it looked like Caine was having fun with that role.
          2. Which Steve video did I take away? As for the music….that is a question for Steve to answer…I will let him know you are asking.
          3. I think I have answered my question…Steve’s Future Worlds video can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy5MIJ4EgvI
          4. I had it on my posts…which after three posts…they disappear from the website…but google likes them….so those posts still live…lol.
          🙂

    1. Hey Larry or do you prefer Lawrence? Glad to see another Michael Caine fan. I am currently at 82 Caine movies watched. Many of his bit/one day roles are not included…and few England movies that I can’t find box office on. But it is not for lacking of trying….lol. When we first put Michael Caine in the database….my wife was helping (this was back in 2011 and one of the first pages we did). After working on his stats which requires lots of research and time spent….at one point my wife said after many hours of research…”How many damn movies does this guy have”. Turns out of actors and actresses…Caine, DeNiro and Samuel L. Jackson are the only ones with over 90 movies in our database. Attached is the video Flora mentions in her comment…it is my favorite Top 10 Michael Caine movie video.

    2. Well, then. You and Bruce have a favourite actor in common.
Bruce loves Michael Caine so much, that he and his family did a youtube video in which everyone including him appeared on camera saying ” I am Michael Caine.” It is very funny. And endearing.

  3. Saw his NowYouSeeMe2 movie on Sunday it is interesting but lacks the charm of the first one. His role is pretty small. I figure there are no too many more chances to see a new Caine movie at the cinema.

    1. Hey Percy A. Thanks for the mini-review on NYSM2. Not surprised that his part is small…..a couple of trailers do not even include him….and the ones that did….it is only for a brief second or two. I agree there might not be too many more Caine movies to reach theaters. So far he has not been added to Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk…..which I find disappointing. But Going in Style with Morgan Freeman and Ann-Margret will be here next year. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Yep Happy Birthday…to one of my favorites….I made sure to update his page with the new formulas. Now done 51 pages….still over 280 to go….slow process…but I will get there some day.
