At one point, Cassavetes and Falk had both left the set and the cameras remained rolling for several minutes. 1. 1 HI BRUCE 1 When I gave this new Peter Falk page a first quick glance down I thought “I’m not gonna tell the Work Horse that he’s given my Joan the kind of “Freebie” gross that he normally gives Loy but that would have been churlish because as usual you have been so comprehensive and detailed across the entire profile so you may wish to take Joan out of Pocketful of Miracles and slot in her old sparring partner Bette Davis instead.

2 The Columbo series always had a guest murderer who was a prominent star to one degree or another – for example Roddy McDowall, William Shatner, Robert Culp, and the gorgeous Faye Dunaway were in separate episodes In Murder by the Book which was as you say was the very first episode of the main series the guest murderer was Jack Cassidy who made two further episodes in 1974 and 1976 but unfortunately Jack was burnt to death in a fire that year at the age of 49. A sad loss because he had a strong TV personality. Patrick McGoohan was the guest villain in a few episodes which he also directed.

4 Prior to Murder by the Book there were two Columbo pilot episodes starring Falk, Prescription Murder in 1968 and Ransom for a Dead Man in early 1971 . Gene Barry [star of the 1953 War of the Worlds] and Lee Grant [Golden Holden’s co-star in Omen 2] were the murderers in 1968 and 1971 pilots respectively. Anyone who has just seen the main series should look up the pilots as they are superb.

5 Anyway it’s unusual for Falk’s excellent but underrated cinematic career to get the coverage and treatment that you’ve given it here so as Falk, Dick Van Dyke and Kelsey Grammer are probably m 3 favourite TV actors I salute you for giving Peter this page.

    1. Hey Bob…..good catch about Joan being Peter’s co-star in Pocketful of Miracles….I have fixed that error. It just goes to show how Joan and Bette are in many ways connected. Good information on Columbo. You are 100% correct….there were two pilot episodes before the Spielberg episode. Glad you like this page. A Dick Van Dyke page might be coming in the future….not sure Kelsey will get a UMR page any time soon.

      1. HI BRUCE 1 Glenn Ford was of course Bette’s co-star in that one though the producers/director wanted Sinatra and the McQueen for Dave the Dude in Pocketful of Miracles. They were apparently first after Katie Hep for the Apple Annie part played by Davis.

2 It might had been better had Katie been in the part because apparently Davis and Glenn fought like rats in a sack and it became so vocal and acrimonious that it distressed the director, the great Frank Capra*** who developed headaches. Davis/Ford had made Stolen Life back in 1946 and I had read of no reports of such bad blood on that set.

***To add to his woes Frank lost his part-deferred salary as the film lost money.

3 However the fireworks on “Miracles” might have started when Glenn tried to move Bette out of the star dressing room so that his then-girlfriend Hope Lange could be beside his dressing room. Also Glenn apparently put it about that he had gotten the part for Davis whose career was fading and she resented that the way Archie Leach had resented Mae West claiming that SHE had “created” Cary Grant..

4 The Davis/Ford feud survived the Miracles movie with Bette in a later interview describing Glenn as a “sewer rat”. I always thought of Bette as Old Cantankerous in skirts as she seemed to feud with half of Hollywood and Crawford claimed that Davis went nuts if you pronounced her name “Bettee” instead of “Bet”

5 A Dick Van Dyke page would be great fun and even I could not press for a Kelsey profile as his movies CV was certainly not like Falk’s. But here’s a thought, what about a Cogerson separate site on TV greats or even a a separate branch of the existing site devoted to those performers? At some stage you must – like Alexander the Great – be looking around for “fresh worlds to conquer”.

        1. Hey Bob
          1. Good information on the behind the scenes of A Pocketful of Miracles….all of that chaos might be why Frank Capra did not make another movie.
          2. I agree with you about Bette and her being “Old Cantankerous in skirts”.
          3. Not seeing a TV page anytime soon….the closest I ever came was this page….https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/time-favorite-tv-shows/
          4. Today….I rarely watch television. Heck nobody in family does. Recently we had an electric storm come through the area…so we unplugged the televisions….about two weeks later we tried to turn on the television and it would not come on….it took awhile to figure out the plug was out of the socket…..two weeks! Now if the computer was not working…we would all go crazy….lol.

          1. HI BRUCE

1 I see TV repeats of old movies [and DVDs] as my only way of catching up with many great films that were made before I was able to watch movies. For example I never would have seen The Thin Woman series in the early days of my viewing but for TV as movie houses in Belfast had stopped showing their reruns by the early 1950s and their were no DVD/videos early on. Just think if it had not been for TV I would never have seen Bill Powell and little Asta in their finest hour !!!

2 Good take on the possible reason for Capra’s career closure. If your original co-star link.column HAD been right and Crawford had made “Miracles” instead of Davis I wonder how Joan and Glenn would have got on, As you know SHE wasn’t the easiest person to get along with either. What annoyed me most about her and Bette was that , a bit like Joel, they attacked people who had done them no apparent harm. For example Davis publicly stated that Greg Peck “couldn’t act!” I distinctly remember my father coming into my bedroom and spitting fire over it.

3 I always add the caveat though that we’re usually only repeating stories that we’re getting 2nd hand and although I always repeat them in good faith I am conscious of the fact that the publicists often invent ‘rivalries’ for publicity purposes. For example it was widely reported that Glenn and Mr Mumbles detested each other and fought the bit out when they made Teahouse in 1956 but I recently saw a repeat of a TV interview with Glenn and he spoke warmly of Mr M and praised him as an actor. It was quite obvious Glenn was sincere in what he was saying and of course it pleased me that 2 of my top 10 idols seem to have liked each other.

4 Am slightly disappointed that you will not be transferring your research and analysis skills to profiles of great TV stars generally but as long as you do something on those personalities who have also had a solid career in the cinema like Peter Falk I’ll not complain or as the saying goes “look a gift horse in the mouth” Have a good remaining weekend.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. I always find it somewhat sad to see somebody like Falk go from a spot in the Top 100….and then steadily work their way off the list. In this case from 88th to in the 600s to the 700s….he might be off the list by 2000.
      2. Massive co-star lists…though it is to be expected when you realize his movie career was over 50 years….not bad for a guy that really started acting when he was almost 30.
      3. The Player is well represented on the lists.
      4. 8 of his Oscar winning co-stars come from that movie.
      Good information…thanks for sharing it.

  4. Thanks Cogerson, this must be one of the most rapidly executed requested! I will come back with more comments, but just to point out that Murder By Death is missing. Ironic, as I recall that you’re the one who initially mentioned in the exchange on Peter Falk a couple of days ago 😉

    1. Hey Phil. Wow. I can not believe I left off Murder by Death. I had all of it’s stats except one and when I leave off one group of stats, that movie gets left behind when I transport the movies from database to website. So I feel like John Heard in Home Alone …so disappointed that I left a major member of Falk’s movie family at home while I went overseas on vacation. ….lol. Needless to say I will fix this.

  5. Loved him as Columbo. Used to watch those shows with my family. Just one more thing; I did not realize he had made so many movies. Princess Bride is one of my favorites ever! Nice page.

    1. Hey Donna. Thanks for the visit and the comment. I imagine Columbo and Princess Bride are his two most remembered performances. Princess Bride is a modern day classic….though it is now a shocking 30 years old.
