We figured it was time to have a place to talk about Steve’s latest video subjects that do not have an UMR page.

  1. 1 STEVE Toshiro Mifune in a career spanning almost half a century made some 170 feature films but film historians remember him most for the series of 16 flicks he made with director and screenwriter Akira Kurosawa such as Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, and Rashomon, all well-covered in your video

2 Kurosawa is regarded as one of the most important and influential film makers in the history of the cinema with for example his Seven Samurai being remade as of course the classic American western The Magnificent Seven, and Rashomon also being remodelled as a western The Outrage, [1964] starring Paul Newman and Laurence Harvey. When Toshiro Mifune gained popularity in mainstream movies Kurosawa cold-shouldered him and criticized his appearance in the TV mini-series Shogun. Apparently George Lucas offered Toshiro the choice of the Darth Vadar and Obi Wan roles in Star Wars which of course Mifune turned down.

3 The more impressive posters for me in your video were Attack Squadron, Whirlwind, Saga of the Vagabonds, Red Sun Grand Prix, Samurai Assassin, Stray Dog, Shogun, The Lower Depths, and Seven Samurai and topping even those were I thought the two for Rashomon. NB: Machiko Kyo Toshiro’s leading lady in the latter film became known to mainstream audiences when she co-starred with Brando and Glenn Ford in Teahouse of August Moon in which she was able to command equal billing above the title with the two American legends. They’re sadly long gone of course whereas today she lives on at the age of 93

4 A fine batch of stills complemented the posters with the best stills in my opinion being 1941, Sanjuro, the Red Sun lobby card, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and especially Throne of Blood. Indeed your still from the latter movie does I think show the Mifune death scene that is said to have impressed DePalma so much that it was the influence for Piper Laurie’s death scene in Carrie. Overall I rated the video tops at 98%.

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, trivia and info, much appreciated.

Glad you liked the posters and stills.

This is one subject we might never see on Bruce’s site, too many Japanese films, where is the box office info? Unless Bruce attempts a ratings only chart, no grosses, or is that blasphemy in this here parts? 😉

Toshiro as Obi-Wan Kenobi might have been interesting, the character already has a Japanese name too, and brandishing a ‘light sabre’ would have seemed natural to his character. Except that Mifune never bothered to learn English, he admitted to that in an interview, which would have made Kenobi’s explanation of the Force difficult to understand, unless he was dubbed.

I nearly left out Shogun, a TV mini-series which was later edited into a TV movie. It was the odd one out here but it was a critical success and was watched by millions across the globe in 1980, which brought more exposure to this legendary actor, so in it went.

Six films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Stray Dog, Yojimbo, Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, Rashomon and Seven Samurai.

Seven Samurai was the top dog at nearly all my sources except Rotten Tomatoes where it tied with Rashomon.

  2. 1 STEVE Omar Sharif’s acting career began in Egyptian films in 1954 and it was not until Lawrence of Arabia in 1962 that he landed an English speaking role. After that he appeared in a string of mainstream English-speaking movies including Dr Zhivago [his personal biggest leading role] and two with Barbra Streisand, Funny Girl (1968) and its sequel Funny Lady (1975). After the latter his film career seemed to go into decline because I’ve either never heard of or have long since forgotten most of the films concerned.

2 The relative brevity of the profile does not impinge on the quality of the material in the video and I liked the posters for Mayerling, Genghis Khan, Funny LADY, The Horsemen, Hidalgo, The Last Valley and Fall of the Roman Empire. However topping even those in my opinion were the very exceptional ones for Che and Lawrence all of which I loved.

3 1st class stills – (1) 13th Warrior (2) with Greg on horseback and the separate lobby card for the same movie (3) from Night of the Generals [my personal favourite Sharif movie along with Zhivago and “Orance”] (4) the “Peeping Tom” one from Funny GIRL of Omar watching Barbra in bed – he probably did that in real life too as they were off screen lovers! (5) from Dr. Zhivago (6) the solo of Omar in Lawrence and (7) the black and white one with OToole from the same movie.

4 There were as I have indicated above gaps in my personal knowledge of the films you selected but the pictorials sold themselves and were easily worth a 96% rating in my opinion. The opening quote from Omar was instructive as he is perceived to have “squandered his talent and [from gambling] lots of money” and it is said that he died “alone and angry.”

    1. Hi Bob. thanks for reviewing and rating my Omar Sharif video, appreciate the info, trivia and comment. Glad you liked the posters and stills.

So naughty Omar had a dalliance with Babs eh, did not know this.

He was a busy actor with over 80 movie credits listed at IMDB. I zeroed in on his English-Language output and narrowed it down to 23 movies.

The Night of the Generals is an old favorite of mine too. A good cast and an interesting story though it wasn’t much of a whodunit. Omar was miscast as a German officer and Peter O’Toole’s natural charisma was missing here thanks to the disturbed character he was playing. I’m glad the film did well in the final ranking.

Mackenna’s Gold is another big favorite of mine. Omar Sharif was a memorable villain, a Mexican Bandit who’s dream was to find the gold and move to Paris.

Two films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. Two 9s – Hidalgo and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Lawrence was unbeatable at all my sources.
