  2. HI STEVE Jon Voight is a highly respected actor who has won an Academy Award and been nominated for 4 and who has also won 4 Golden Globes and nominated for 11. For me though he has never surpassed his performance as the gigolo Joe Buck in the 1969 Midnight Cowboy which brought him a certain measure of stardom in the 1970s with films like Deliverance, Coming Home and The Champ.

2 However he faded somewhat in the 1980s, by the mid1990s did not warrant even equal billing to the likes of Pacino, DeNiro 1and Cruise and even lesser stars, in recent years his daughter Angelina has been THE star of the family and as your selection of posters illustrates virtually all of Jon’s recent roles have been supporting ones albeit usually excellently performed. Jon’s son is of course actor/producer James Haven. When he was younger Jon reminded me slightly of the TV actor David Soul

3 Excellent poster were those for Pearl Harbuor, Enemy of the State, The Manchurian Candidate, Anaconda, National Treasure 2, Holes, U Turn and The Odessa File. I thought that very classy stills were the ones of Jon and Angelina, him with Burt Reynolds [twice]and those for the films National Treasure, Mission Impossible, and Coming Home. ABSOLUTE standout stills for my money were Runaway Train, Jon and Jane Fonda and the Joe Buck and Ratso one.

4 The whole package is listed in my notes as earning a 96% rating. The Big Guy has given us a daughter but not a father page but has covered 4 of your Voight Top 5 on the pages of his co-stars. WH’s average for the 4 [Deliverance, Midnight Cowboy, Heat and Coming Home] is approx. 82.4% compared with your 85.6% for the same 4. Do matter balance out overall or do you think you are more generous with ratings? Certainly HE doesn’t lack generosity with the grosses as he seems to throw them in everyone’s direction regardless of size of role.

5 Part of the Work Horse’s policy has always seemed to me to give honour where honour is due to performers who were never stars/are no longer stars but who have achieved a recognised high artistic excellence and therefore it slightly surprised me to find no Cogerson Voight page. Of course such sentiments are not meant to convey lack of appreciation of the excellent new profiles that he – and you – DO continue to give us and there are of course limited working hours in the day. Anyway the good news for YOU is that once again you have stolen a march on the WH.

    1. Hello Bob, thanks for reviewing and rating my Jon Voight video, appreciate the comment and comparison. Glad you liked the posters and stills.

Maybe Bruce simply forgot about Voight, looking at the request page, there are no requests for Jon, a shame really like you say he is a good actor and a big star at one time, though it didn’t last.

I first noticed how excellent he was in the thriller Runaway Train back in the ‘VHS days’, he played a super tough con who escapes from prison with Eric Roberts and bad luck they jump onto the wrong train. Voight’s performance was riveting. I really wanted him to win on Oscar day but he lost to William Hurt in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Am I more generous than Bruce at the ratings? Maybe. He does get a bit stingy on some scores. Hedy’s most famous film barely made an impression on her chart. I wonder where Samson ranks on Bruce’s DeMille page… hang on… nope can’t see it anywhere… oh wait there it is, down there [points] no no further down… there it is at no.26 rubbing shoulders with Chuck and his circus picture. 😉

Voight has three films scoring 10 out of 10 from my sources – Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance and The General. Two scored 9 – Heat and Coming Home. The IMDBs top rated Voight film was Heat which scored 8.2.

What would Bruce’s top rated Voight film be? Midnight Cowboy scored 82.5 on his Hoffman chart. Deliverance scores 85.5 on Burt Reynolds chart and Heat scores 84.5. That means we have the same top 3. [cue cheers and whistles]

      1. The same top 3 but he has Heat above Midnight Cowboy, I’ve got Heat at no.3. I think I do I can’t remember. Maybe it’s at no.4? ….No Heat is 3rd and Coming Home 4th.

        1. GOOD AFTERNOON STEVE. As always I enjoyed your backchat and for fun the following is a complete comparison of your Top 4 Voight movies with the Work Horse’s take on the same 4.

LENSMAN TOP 4 IN RANK ORDER
          1 DELIVERANCE 90.5%
          2 MIDNIGHT COWBOY 89.2%
          3 HEAT 82.5%
          4 COMING HOME 80.2%

COGERSON’s RANKING OF THE SAME 4 IN RELATION TO EACH OTHER
          1 DELIVERANCE 85.5%
          2 HEAT 84.5%
          3 MIDNIGHT COWBOY 82.5%
          4 COMING HOME 77%

You’ve Runaway Train as your NO 5 but I couldn’t pick it up anyway on Bruce’s site – no real stars apart from Jon.

          1. Thanks Bob, that’s pretty close. The only other high ranking film I could find on the UMR charts was Enemy of the State which scored 7.1 on Bruce’s Will Smith page. That will probably be no.5 until he scores Runaway Train and Fantastic Beasts.

Reading about Jon Voight recently I found he was anti-Obama and pro-Trump, I don’t think his fiery daughter would have been very happy about that.

          2. HI STEVE

1 HI AGAIN STEVE Yes Jon is a long-standing convinced Republican by political ideology whereas Angelina has won awards and honours for promoting human rights and various humanitarian causes.

2 However she is on record as saying that because of her crusades many people think she’s a Democrat whereas she is in fact a registered Independent and her true passion lies with rights issues for themselves.

          3. Hi Steve and Bob, actually Voigt used to be a leftist but like Chuck Heston, he turned his coat at some stage, blaming his earlier views on Marxist propaganda (in the US mind you). Politics aside, I did notice he is one of the few major American stars without a UMR page, but it’s his own fault. Despite his success in the 70s, he seemed to disappear every few years until the mid-90s, by which time his star had fallen considerably and he settle mainly in supporting roles. So overall, his career is not quite as great as it could have been. However, there is still hope for Voigt on this site as Bruce once told me he may cover all best AA best actor winners. My favourite Voigt films are (not surprisingly) Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance and Runaway Train. Odessa File was pretty good but not as entertaining as the book.
By the way, great job on the other latest videos Steve, Clint Eastwood, Dennis Hopper, Nicholson and Hoffman. Eastwood was particularly impressive and it was nice to see all the good films he directed. I look forward to checking out Gene Hackman, who notably was James Garner’s favourite modern actor.

          4. Hi Phil, thanks for checking out my latest videos.

I haven’t seen The Odessa File in ages. I did see The Day of the Jackal again recently, by the same author Frederick Forsyth, it did go on a bit but it kept my interest.

I’ll mention a guilty pleasure favorite starring Jon Voight, Anaconda. I have that on DVD. An enormous snake terrorizes people on a boating trip up the Amazon, forgot what type of snake it was… hang on… python? boa? It may have been an anaconda. Voight is completely over the top in this and picked up a Razzie nomination for his efforts (Kevin Costner won that year for The Postman).

          5. Thanks for the reply Steve, I haven’t seen that snake movie, but I actually thought The Day of the Jackal (with Edward Fox) was really good. Much better than the sort of remake with Bruce Willis, just called The Jackal.

          6. HI PHIL
1 Thanks for the additional information about Voight. There is a school of thought that suggests that the strength of belief in a creed should relate to one’s own perception of the quality of the thing in its own right. Certainly whilst most of us change our minds about many things and an open mind can be healthy, when I observe persons blaming the INFLUENCE OF OTHERS for convictions they once held but have now discarded and are wont to ridicule I wonder if those persons fall into the category of a character in a famous novel that I read of whom another character said “He is a feather for every wind that blows”

2 Anyway great to have had the opportunity to exchange posts with you again. I certainly can boast that I have NEVER left the H out of Voight but I have included an H in Jon occasionally. So who’s perfect? Well Joel Hirschhorn possibly judging by the number of times his ‘pearls of wisdom’ are offered to us on this site but few among the rest of us

  3. Bob, Bruce is currently wallowing in nostalgia. He discovered our old comments from Hubpages which he thought were gone forever, all thanks to an archival website.

I never really believed you disliked Myrna, Bob, you’re a big softy at heart aren’t you? 😉

If I’ve missed any old favorites of yours on my video channel let me know. Flora has reminded me that I still haven’t got round to doing a video on the great Sidney Poitier. I will make sure he’s on the next wave of male actors, not the current wave which I have already mapped out, six to go, then it’s ladies turn, and eventually Poitier will get his due along with Lee Marvin and Steiger.

    1. HI STEVE
      HI STEVE
1 I think we need to keep things in perspective. I have said that I have become star struck with Myrna but she hasn’t driven me mad and I would still no more agree with the Work Horse’s description of her as box office Queen than I would dream of calling Mr M the greatest male box office star. Now if anybody wants to keep reminding us of the Duke’s box office credentials which make him one of a handful of contenders for Greatest Box Office Star regardless of gender I could read such stuff until the cows come home.

2 I think that WH and I have reached the maximum compromise about Myrna that we’re ever going to. We’ve agreed in essence to differ about her box office magnitude but jointly admire her as an artistic performer and above all [certainly on my part] as a person of great social conscience who has done much to champion human rights.

3 Anyway for me an additional bonus that arises from enjoying your excellent videos is that we always have the opportunity of engaging in backchat with each other. I look forward to your next “waves”and that is an appropriate note to end on as apparently Mr M infuriated Paramount by keeping cast and crew expensively pinned down on a beach for several days because he was “waiting for the right wave” to shoot.. Finally a leading paramount executive was sent down to the beach to ask Mumbles “What the **** are you playing at?” Have a good remainder of weekend.

      1. Hey Bob and Steve
        1. Just added Steve’s Nicholson video to the page….meant to do that this morning…but I forgot….so 15 hours later I have finally adding the link.
        2. Yep…I agree Bob and I have found a compromise on Loy.
        3. Steve….”wallowing in nostalgia” can be fun.
        4. Good Nicholson talk…fun to read….thanks for the comments and the visits…..all are greatly appreciated.

  4. HI STEVE

1 This is just a test post as when I woke up this morning so many posts about Cary Grant had been lodged overnight that I was wondering if the site would have Room for One More [and a Grant pun IS intended!]

2 Some day you and I will have to get ourselves a couple of idols that EVERYBODY wants to write about on this site. As it is you will just have to go on admiring Chuck and Hammer Horror movies and I will still plough on plugging the Duke and Mumbles when I can and passing sarcastic comments about Myrna.

3 Though I have to admit that I have now written so much about Miss Loy that despite myself she is becoming one of my favourites and any criticism is normally for old time’s sake. Just as familiarity can “breed contempt” it can also create an affinity between two people. Anyway Hirsch wouldn’t want critics to become “Mr Nice Guy” all of a sudden.

4 W o Bob is away for a few days vacation and I have the house to myself and on those occasions I am always looking at ways to keep myself occupied. I have been fortunate therefore this time in that WH has given us a new page on Hedwig and a Tarzan revamp which are occupying some of my time and you have now produced a Jack Nicholson video.

5 I have been looking forward to the latter because when you said you had one more Easy Rider star to profile even Joel Hirschhorn would have been able to work out whom you meant. So I will be letting you have my comments on Jack’s video shortly

    1. Hey Bob….all those Cary Grant comments are almost 6 years old….it is cool to see Steve’s, Flora’s and Ruffryder (He goes by Soren these days) in the comment box. I thought these comments were gone forever. I also found the missing George Clooney comments…but for some reason…I am not as concerned about getting those on the website.

      1. HI BRUCE

And to think that Cary was English born whereas George is a Yank. As the Duke might express it “A prophet is without honour in his own home town!.”
