  1. Hey Bob and Steve. Now I understand why Susan Sarandon is getting views and comments ….Steve’s latest video. Interesting back and forth from you two. I will watch Feud when I track down a DVD of the entire season. Nice review Bob. Sad that you don’t buy Kurt Russelll as Elvis,,,, but I still like you Steve…lol.

    1. There is only one Elvis Bruce, and it’s not Elvis Costello. 🙂

I saw that Kurt Russell tv movie at the cinema in 1979, an edited version released theatrically in Europe. I think I saw it again on video in the 80s and that was it.

  2. Added Steve’s Sarandon YouTube Video to our UMR page. Out thoughts on his video.

“Been a fan of hers since The Hunger started showing up on HBO in the early 1980s. Seen almost all of these movies…..with the exception of #37, #32 and #16. So that is 37 of the movies listed here. Add another 14 movies from our list and our tally is up to 51. Favorites include #25 Joe…one of Peter Boyle’s first great performances, #20 The Hunger….love this vampire movie #14 Robot and Frank….fun movie. #11 Witches of Eastwick….my favorite Sarandon movie. #10 Field of Dreams and #1 Thelma and Louise are good movies….just not among my favorites. Fun video. Voted up and shared at UMR.”

    1. Hi Bruce, 37 seen out of 40 is outstanding, 51 seen from your expanded chart is amazing. You have watched a lot more modern movies than I have. Flora has seen 9 and I’ve seen 13 from this top 40. Field of Dreams? I haven’t seen Robot & Frank and I’m a sci-fi fan, tut tut. Thanks for posting, appreciate the vote and share.

  3. It provides balance if when a Joan Crawford profile is presented a Bette Davis one is also offered [and vice versa] as historically these two Great Classic era stars are very closely linked because of the long and bitter feud they conducted in Old Hollywood.

In the recent TV miniseries “Feud” Jessica Lange played Joan and Susan “Abi” Sarandon was Bette, a role that earned Susan Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations. Accordingly as you have just given us a video on Jessica I am pleased to see you have “balanced” matters with one profiling Susan’s career.

The Work Horse has beaten you to the punch once more as not only has he already provided a Sarandon page but he ranks her 22nd in his Greatest Screen Actresses 1950-2010 .

VIDEO STILLS 40-21 Best POSTERS for me are Banger Sisters, Alfie, Wall Street 2, Snitch, Joe, very raunchy one for Other Side of Midnight, Elizabethtown, The Lovely Bones, Light Sleeper and Speed Racer

Not too many STILLS in this part but I liked what is there (1) Susan with Mike Douglas (2) lobby card for The Great Waldo Pepper (3) with my Julia in Stepmom and (4 ) Susan in Speed Racer.

    To be continued———

    1. SUSAN SARANDON PART 2 Susan is a highly political actress known for progressive and liberal causes and some of her films reflect her liberal ethos , for example the 1989 A Dry White Season which co-starred her with Donald Sutherland and Marlon Brando both of whom have also been associated with the liberal stream among Hollywood stars.

Sutherland even married into political liberalism as his wife from 1966-1970 was Shirley Douglas daughter of Canadian social democratic politician Tommy Douglas considered as the “father” of the Canadian universal healthcare system.

Donald wrote blogs for The Huffington Post in 2008 and in those blogs he stated his support for Barack Obama in the US Presidential election that year.

SUSAN SARANDON VIDEO 1-20. POSTERS I most like are Cloud Atlas, James and The Giant Peach, Robot & Frank [I adore character actor Frank Langella] The Front Page, White Palace [daring!] both ones for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, both ones for The Hunger, a saucy and stunning one for Atlantic City – “The only people who went to see it were myself and Kirk Douglas’ family!” – Burt Lancaster [Cogerson adjusted domestic gross just approx. $40 million] and Arbitrage.

I saw the latter film in an art house cinema over her as it was not released elsewhere so congratulations on your boldness in including an “art house” movie! Didn’t hurt too much?

STILLS that most pleased me Cloud Atlas, the saucy one for Rocky Horror Picture Show, Susan and her “Little Women” Pretty Baby duo, gripping Enchanted solo, the “Witches” quartet, Susan with Kevin Costner in I think Steve Durham! The Hunger and a lovely closing one of Susan in bathing costume.

The overall video is comfortably worth a 97.5% rating to me and you and Bruce agree on 3 of Susan’s Top 6 best reviewed films – Little Women, Dead Man Walking and naturally Thelma and Louise which you both have as you No 1. Nice work

      1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, rating, info, trivia and comparison, it is appreciated.

Happy you liked the posters, stills and lobby cards.

To be honest I’d completely forgotten about the mini-series Feud, I haven’t seen it. I’m not a big fan of biopics for TV or cinema. It needs a great deal of suspension of disbelief on my part to accept Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis, Anthony Hopkins as Nixon or Kurt Russell as Elvis Presley and it doesn’t always work with me.

The funny thing is I have no problem accepting actors from classic Hollywood playing famous historical figures, Heston, Brando, O’Toole, Burton etc. Maybe it depends on the actor or the historical figure, or even the style of film.

Arbitrage? Art film? Didn’t even consider that. I have nothing against arty farty cinema monsieur Bob and I’ve also included plenty of European movies in past video charts, can you find any in Bruce’s charts? [Bob growls]

Three Susan Sarandon films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Thelma & Louise, Atlantic City and Little Women.

Three more scored 9 – Dead Man Walking, James and the Giant Peach and In the Valley of Elah. 12 films scored 8 out of 10 including – Rocky Horror, Bull Durham and The Witches of Eastwick.

Top rated at IMDB is Cloud Atlas and Dead Man Walking, no.1 at Rotten Tomatoes and Bruce’s critics chart is Thelma & Louise. Rocky Horror is far and away her biggest hit in domestic grosses, thanks to constant reruns and late night Rocky Horror sing-a-long shows.

“My children were embarrassed at my Lincoln Center Tribute. I forgot they would show film clips and my children hadn’t seen anything. Every time something a little racy would come on like The Hunger (1983), I’d look at my 13-year-old, who was shielding his eyes.”

        1. HI STEVE Excellent comprehensive feedback on my Sarandon posts. I actually though Susan was quite good as Bette.

Bruce’s tables have no art films you say. “The Great Ones make their own rules.” Martin Crane [Frasier’s dad] talking about one of Martin’s own sporting heroes.

The best Nixon I’ve seen is in my own opinion Jason Robards in the TV series Washington Behind Closed Doors (1977). He wasn’t called Nixon in it but rather Richard Monkton. However Nixon was clearly who Monkton was.

PRESEDENTIALAIDE “It’s a pity Mr President that presidents are allowed to do only two terms. Think of what you could accomplish if you could stand for re-election for a 3rd term.
MONKTON: Somebody should maybe be giving though to bringing that about!”

All the real life characters have aliases in that series and it was fun working out who was who

RICHARD MONKTON “Pretty Billy! How I hate that Ivy Leaguer. If I had done half the things his family or Esker Scott Anderson have done I’d be in jail now!

Pretty Billy was of course JFK as in real life Nixon had a negative obsession with the Kennedys, and Esker Anderson was LBJ.

Military orderly escorts President Johnson along the tarmac to inspect a parade of the helicopters ready to take off on missions in Nam. They reach the end one which has been made ready for Johnson to take to the air.

ORDERLY “And this one here is yours Mr President.”
          LBJ: “Son, they’re ALL mine!”

In short I love movies about real life political figures.

          1. Good stuff Bob, makes me almost wish I was watching that show, almost.

Were you a fan of The West Wing too? For some weird reason whenever I saw the name ‘west wing’ I thought it was a hospital show.

I’m currently watching Designated Survivor on Netflix, after a devastating terrorist attack on the Capitol Building, Kiefer Sutherland ‘Secretary of Housing and Urban Development’ suddenly finds himself next in line for the Presidency.

  4. Hi, Bruce.

I have seen more of Sarandon’s career that I thought. Turns out I have seen her in movies where I had no idea who she was at the time I saw the movies the first time. (examples are The Great Waldo Pepper and The Front Page)

The highest ranking film of hers I have seen is Number 1: Dead Man Walking.

The lowest ranking film I have seen is The Banger Sisters at 51.

The highest ranking film I have not seen is Enchanted at number 3.

As with many of the pages I have seen more films the higher the rankings are:

I have seen 6 of the top 10
I have seen 8 of the top 20
I have seen 10 of the top 30
I have seen 11 of the top 40
I have seen 13 of her films overall.

Not a lot, but enough to comment I think.

    My favourites are:

    Rocky Horror Picture Show
    Thelma & Louise
    Bull Durham
    Atlantic City
    Witches of Eastwick.

    Cheers,

    Flora

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. Thanks for checking out my Susan Sarandon page….always good to see you on the current star pages.
      2. Tally count….Me 43, Steve 15 and you at 13….I am actually impressed with your 13…I would have guessed a lot lower.
      3. She actually had a decent career in the 1970s. William Goldman blames her for ruining The Great Waldo Pepper…because she made her character so charming and likeable…that the movie could not recover from her tragic death in the movie.
      4. 60% of the Top 10, 40% of the Top 20….is actually pretty good numbers…especially with your movie watching rules/guidelines.
      5. Good movies in your Top 5. When you look at the Movie Score column….all 5 of your favorites are in the Top 11….I think that is a pretty good showing for my ranking system.

      I greatly appreciate the comment.

  5. I liked her in The Client and Stepmom. She is a good actress. It is interesting that she made movies with so many stars that won Oscars. Interesting facts. I remember her in Atlantic City with Burt :Lancaster too. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.

    1. Hey BERN1960…..The Client is a very good movie….and one of the movies that got her an Oscar nomination. Atlantic City has one of the last great Lancaster movies. Glad you found the Oscar stat interesting too. Thanks for the comment.
