Stallone stats. I originally wrote this page on HubPages….it was very popular with over 100,000 views….I then moved it to CogersonMovieScore and it struggled with only 8,000 views.  I wonder which way it will go on UltimateMovieRankings. Only time will tell.

1 I’ve mentioned before that a film journalist opined that Sly’s career which the journalist said was largely defined by several franchises might be the template for future stardom in that performers who don’t get into successful franchises may not achieve stardom. Certainly if you exclude from Stallone’s overall adjusted domestic Cogerson gross of $4.9 billion the figures for the Rocky, Rambo, Expendables, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spy Kids 3D franchises you are left with just a total adjusted domestic figure of approx. $1.76 billion and an average of less than $54 million for the 33 non-franchise films.

2 At 71 I think that it’s about time he called it a day as an action hero [who does he think he is? Scott or McCrea.] I did enjoy Sylvester in a few of his heyday Rocky outings but he most pleased me in the highly watchable 1981 Nighthawks and I thought he and Rutger Hauer made excellent adversaries in that one. I also thought that Sly gave his best serious acting performance in Cop Land (1997).

3 Interestingly to me in Escape Plan (2013) Sly got billed above Arnie whereas in Grudge Match (also 2013) Sylvester took second billing to DeNiro. You demonstrate above that whereas Escape Plan was a flop in the States it was a reasonably healthy hit worldwide and indeed must have been profitable because Escape Plan 2: Hades comes out next year though this time Sly goes it alone without Arnie or any other big star. [Oh Myrna if only you could have occasionally “stood alone” like that !]

4 Anyway Bruce as always congratulations on a highly comprehensive profile of one of the great durable modern stars. As is usual with your profiles this Stallone page was crammed with interesting stats and facts so that it was well worthwhile giving it a birthday celebration rerun.
    Good stuff.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our birthday boy’s movie page…hard to believe he is 71. Good stats on Sly’s non-franchise roles. But with Rocky and Rambo he has two iconic roles……when most actors have none….and only a few have one. I do not think he is giving up the action roles…Creed 2 is coming….and I bet Expendables 4 will eventually see the light of day. Heck Randolph Scott’s last movie was made when he was 59. Stallone’s stand alone movies have been disasters….how Bullet to the Head cost nearly $100 million to make is beyond me. 🙂

  2. Happy 70th birthday to Sly Stallone.

I’d like to take this time to relate something I told Bruce regarding the movie Rocky.

The bridge that is seen in Rocky is near where I live and will soon be torn down.

During the filming of that movie, ordinary traffic continued.

There is a scene where the car is broken down on the side of the bridge, and nobody helps.

Well, my father was driving down that bridge. Being a mechanic, he stopped off to help.

Suddenly he hears “CUT!” an irate man starts yelling at him.

Turns out that my father interfered with the filming of Rocky.

    LOL!

    1. Hey Flora….that is a great story. That is a great movie to interrupt….somewhere there is film showing your day walking up to the car…..now would that not be an awesome thing to see.

  3. 1 Slow down for Pete’s sake – or go on holiday NOW ! !

2 Do you not think he’s a bit long in the tooth for the action-man roles that he continues to play? Even those ‘young men’ of the 50s such as Randolph, Joel, and Fred knew not to push the boat out too far and they did not depend on physical brute strength but rather on guns, dancing, and the fascination that prospective ‘child brides’ had for them.

3 It is a great coincidence that when considering other actors a Duke or Bud related story often
seems to come to mind. I’ve nothing on the Duke this time except to say that he would have had a 70 year old Stallone for breakfast – ask Frank Sinatra’s bodyguards !!.

    4. However I read years ago that in a proposed big screen remake of Streetcar he was considering playing the Brando role when Tennessee Williams personally wrote to him telling he would only make a fool of himself. He sulked and put out a statement saying that playwrights should not compare one actor with another and should not dictate to performers. However he seems to have taken Tennessee’s advice because the project did not proceed at least not on the big screen unless it went under another name.

    Best wishes BOB

    1. Hey Bob.
      1. This time next week….you will be looking for new stats…and they will not be coming….lol. My goal is to get two more new pages and at least two more updates before vacation.
      2. I don’t know….he is looking pretty good …even at 70….I bought him in Expendables 1 & 2….not so much in Expendables 3…I look forward to Rocky 10 in 2026…when the 80 year old Sly returns to the ring for the last time.
      3. Sounds like an interesting free for all….so your money is on Wayne.
      4. Thankfully he came to his senses….Stallone has many Raspberry Awards….that might have set the record for most Raspberry Awards for a movie.

1 I think I told you my daughter stayed in Atlanta and that I visited her there for a couple of weeks.

2 Her husband took me for a meal in Planet Hollywood which I think Stallone owned along with Arnie before the franchise closed?? Indeed just as I couple Seagal/Van Damme I tend to bracket Stallone/Arnie.

3 By the way it has just sunk in with me – the greatest film buff that I have encountered in recent years has never seen all of the greatest Christmas movie of all time. C’mon ! Watch it right thru. I assure you chronologically George could not have made any input to that film.

        1. Hey Bob
          1. Atlanta has some fun things to do. Even though I am only a few hours away from Washington D.C…..seems I go to more sporting events in Atlanta than I do anywhere else….Debbie is from Auburn, Alabama so we seem to always be going through Atlants.
          2. I used to love the Planet Hollywood restaurants…but sadly they seem to all be shutting down….Arnold, Bruce and Sly made those places a fun place to go for years….but they expanded too fast and too far apart. The one in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is now a sports supply store…..it is very strange to go in there now.
          3. I will have to watch the entire White Christmas movie this holiday season….I will take your word that George has nothing to do with the movie….lol.

          1. BRUCE
1 I still have a Planet Hollywood T shirt that I got in my 1999 visit. It’s very faded now but I keep it out of nostalgia.

2 I loved Atlanta. My daughter took wife of Robert and me for drinks in the rotating skyscraper restaurant that’s a prominent landmark.in the city. I am currently watching every episode of the TV series Matlock starring the late Andy Griffith and it is set in Atlanta and you regularly get a shot of that skyscraper in the background. So happy days!

3 I thought that Bruce was the ‘Third Man’ in Planet Hollywood but was not sure enough to mention him in my last post.

          2. Hey Bob
            1. We have some Planet Hollwood stuff around the house too.
            2. Glad you liked Atlanta so much…Washington DC has something like that too.
            3. Bruce actually stuck with Planet Hollywood the longest….at the time Demi Moore was the fourth….as she and Bruce were still married.

      2. Hey Flora….leaning towards a Marshall brother and sister directing page as the latest current page….Dana Andrews is under serious consideration for the page I publish right before leaving….though Richard Pryor is also in the running….as for updates….Will Smith done today….Dustin Hoffman and Anthony Quinn are up next….hope that helps your “radar”….sorry no Canadians….lol.

    1. Thanks Pete. I was pretty shocked when he did not win too. I actually had him as the winner on my Best Supporting Actor page…and was about to hit publish as soon as they said Stallone was the winner. Instead I had to quickly scramble and delete Sly and add Mark R. from Bridge of Spies to the table. I will fix the Creed issue…thanks for that and the comment.
