Need to know which Time Travel Movies got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information…and alot more.

We ended up with 113 Time Travel Movies on this page.  Here is how we came up with our 113.  Step 1:  Went to our database and just started typing in the Time Travel Movies that immediately popped into our heads….this got us to 52 movies.  Step 2:  We did some internet searches on Time Travel Movies….this got us to 75 movies.  Step 3:  We did a post asking the readers on this website…which ones had we missed.  Well thanks to Paul G., Anonymous, In The Shadows, Cameron, Søren and Kevin we reached 101 movies.  Step 4:  We dug out one of our Video Hound Golden Movie Retriever books and got up to 112 movies. Step 5:  Got into a conversation with our oldest daughter…about whether Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban was a time travel movie or not…well after some debate (she won)….the 113th movie was added to the page.

Is this all of the time travel movies?  Absolutely not!  First of all….we only looked at movies that played in North American theaters.  Why you ask?  Well our movie ranking system requires box office grosses.  So movies released to home entertainment, television movies and some international movies were not included in the rankings.  So….we acknowledge this is not all the time travel movies….but we feel it is a pretty good list.  If your favorite is missing…just leave a comment at the bottom and we will get it added on to the page.  *When looking at the following table…please not that the movies are ranked by their critic/audience rating….but the tables are very sortable…so you can in fact…sort the movies anyway you would like.

Time Travel Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Time Travel Movies by the stars of the movies
  • Sort Time Travel Movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Time Travel Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Time Travel Movies  received.
  • Sort Time Travel Films by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. I don’t remember every element of these pictures but I don’t know if I would say they are Time Travel movies when it comes to Big and 13 Going on 30. the adults start acting like kids. Jumanji is more a game fantasy . I think in Zathura, another game pic the kid playing runs into himself as an adult, so is that time travel? Groundhog Dog he just keeps repeating the same day. Clockstoppers if I remember he could stop time but I don't recall any travel (there could be). Project Almanac the 2 guys got powers that made one a super villain and the other a superhero. My Science Project was them making the perfect woman, though, and I haven't seen it in over 30 years there may have been some dinosaurs in it.

I wonder if the various Christmas Carol/Scrooge movies are time travel since he goes back to his childhood and sees his future. Is It's a Wonderful Life a time travel movie, he goes back to parts of his past.

    1. Some of the above should read “I wouldn’t say Big and 13 Going on 30 are Time Travel” and “Groundhog Day” and “sees his future”.

    2. Hey Dan….good points….I think many of these movies dealt with time manipulation…like Big and 13 Going On 30…they do not get in a machine….but the characters do travel…as in those two movies…their bodies are aged about 17 to 20 years. In fairness…I should include Zathura if I included Jumanji. Project Almanac is about a son that discovers his dad’s time machine and starts using it….so that one is a time machine movie for sure. As for My Science Project….yes it has dinosaurs…because they go back in time and see them….the move that they were making a perfect woman was Weird Science.

I saw Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life show up on many Best Time Travel Movie Lists…but I decided to not include them too…..and I guess under the time manipulation rule they should all be included as well. I am putting these movie suggestions in my movie book….and when I update this page again….I will add them into the table.

As always…thanks for the visit and the comment….all are greatly appreciated.

      1. I’m getting old, they made a TV series from Weird Science, should have gotten the perfect woman from that. Man, really forgot My Science Project and I used to have it on video or was that Weird Science.

        1. Hey Dan….that series was very short lived…though I actually went and saw Weird Science in the theaters. As for My Science Project…it came out the same year (1985) as Weird Science and Real Genius…so I think you can be forgiven for getting them mixed up. Heck they actually all got released in August of that year….what were the producers thinking? Thanks for the return visit.

  2. I have seen only 13 Time Travel movies. It isn’t that I don’t enjoy the genre, it is just that I don’t happen to watch them because of the genre. I watch the films for other reasons.

My favourites are The Time Machine, Back to the Future trilogy and the original Planet of the Apes series titles.

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out my time travel movie page. Your favorites are good ones for sure. I was shocked that I had seen so many of the movies myself…..topping Steve….I did not see that coming…lol. Thanks for sharing your movie thoughts.
