Our UMR Review Of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Why I watched this one? Love QT, Pitt, DiCaprio, Robbie and Russell. Plus reviews were outstanding….including one from my son that said this was “top tier” stuff.

What is this one about? A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.

My thoughts on this one? Ok….there are many parts that I liked about this movie. (1) Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are awesome together…and create some memorable characters. (2) Movie makes you feel you are back in the late 1960s. (3) Some of the editing is awesome. Standout scenes include DiCaprio stepping in for Steve McQueen and Burt Reynolds. (4) A fight scene involving Bruce Lee is probably the most entertaining scene in the movie.

I did have some issues with the movie. (1) Way too long…I looked at my phone numerous times as I was seeing how much time was left in the movie. (2) Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate does not really have much to do in the movie. (3) The grand finale, had humor and was entertaining, but I feel was somewhat in bad taste..especially if you know the events of August 8th, 1969. (4) Pitt and DiCaprio actually do not have that many scenes together…I wanted more of them together.

Final thought: A good movie but far from beingTarantino’s best.

It’s the best film of this year so far for me. It also has a great soundtrack, not too many films have 3 songs by Paul Revere and the Raiders or Choo Choo Train by the Box Tops. Also nothing like hearing the old Drake / Chennault Boss radio KHJ jingles (you get KHJ legends like Robert W. Morgan and the Real Don Steele there too). Did you notice who Margot was watching on the screen in The Wrecking Crew?

Hey Dan….glad you enjoyed Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I agree the music was awesome….QT has a great ear for classic songs in modern movies. Gotta admit, I am not aware of a few of the people you mention in your comment. As for Margot watching The Wrecking Crew…are you talking about Dino popping up on my big screen or the actual Sharon Tate being on the screen? I think the movie has an excellent chance to be QT’s biggest box office hit….so I feel many people agree with your mini-review. Good stuff as always.
