Our UMR Review Of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
Finally Terry Gilliam’s take on Don Quixote can be seen. It took him 29 years to get this movie completed. There have been documentaries on his quest to get this done. So was it worth all the pain and suffering? That is a yes and no answer.
On the positive side, Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce are outstanding in the biggest roles in the movie. This might be Driver’s best performance. He is a blast to watch in the movie. Some of the sets are amazing. Seeing Gilliam weaving some magic is fun and made me think of other Gilliam movies.
On the negative side, pacing is an issue. Many scenes linger on much too long. Many times I found myself bored with the movie and checking the time to see how much longer till the end of the movie. That has only happened one other time in a Gilliam movie (Tideland) that I have watched.
Final thought: I suspect that I will appreciate this movie more as time passes. I also suspect that a second viewing will be a more rewarding experience….but right now I feel this only a “slightly better than average” movie.
