I have seen Graham Chapman in 3 movies: The Magic Christian/Doctor in Trouble/Life of Joel. However it was in real life that Graham became my hero because of the manner in which he rid himself of his alcohol addiction which was interfering savagely with his work and which he concluded might kill him.

He opined that he could not succeed in beating the booze via gradualism or in company and decided to stop drinking “cold turkey” and alone. On a Christmas day he did his last round of socialising and feasting/boozing; told his friends and family he was going abroad on holiday and would not be available again until the New Year; and then got off the merry-go-round for “as long as it took”.

True to his plan he awoke on Boxing day in secret self-imposed lockdown in his own home and stayed in bed until the new year all the while[without assistance of any kind] in a life or death struggle as he saw it with the severe withdrawal symptoms such as massive sweats and hallucinations about for example bats and other fierce creatures flying out of the walls and ceiling screaming and lunging at him. It was hell Graham said but it worked and in the New Year he was Clean and Sober.

I had boozed all my life and although I never had anywhere near Graham’s problems the hangovers were becoming more severe as I aged and I decided to stop alcohol completely. I had several failed attempts until I read a book of collected stories [including and especially Graham’s] told by a number of celebs who had defeated the booze addiction. Happily I have been teetotal for some time now and because of that I will always think fondly of Graham Chapman as a person.

Hey Bob. Thanks for the thoughts on Graham Chapman and for sharing some of your issues you overcame. I had read John Cleese discussing how out of control Chapman had gotten during their television series. Your re-telling of how he got sober, now makes sense to how the Pythons were able to crank out 3 movies in a short period of time. I have also seen 3 of his movies….but they were the last three Python movies. I might have seen parts of Yellowbeard….but I can barely remember anything about that movie. Good information….and thanks again for sharing stuff from your private life.
