1. Cher was born Cherilyn Sarkisian in El Centro, California in 1946.

2.  Cher’s mother was actress Georgia Holt.  Holt and played minor roles in films and on television.  Her IMDb page shows 11 acting credits.

3.  At age 16, Cher dropped out of school, left her mother’s house, and moved to Los Angeles with a friend. She took acting classes and worked to support herself, dancing in small clubs along Hollywood’s Sunset Strip.

4.  Cher met future husband and co-star, Sonny Bono, in November 1962 when he was working for record producer Phil Spector.

5. Phil Spector produced Cher’s first song….Ringo, I Love You.   She performed the song using the name Bonnie Jo Mason.  It was not a successful song.

6. Sonny and Cher charted ten Billboard  top 40 singles,  including five top-ten singles.

7.  Cher’s first movie was 1967’s Good Times.  In that movie Sonny and Cher spoofed many Hollywood classic movie scenes.

8.  By 1968, the duo of Sonny & Cher were losing popularity.  The film Chastity was planned to reconnect with the younger audience, make Cher a major movie star, and establish Sonny in the film business.

9.  Sonny & Cher invested $500,000 of their own money into Chastity, even pawning the furniture from their Bel Air mansion to raise funds. When Chastity failed at the box office, the couple lost their investment and ended up owing the U.S. government $270,000 in taxes.

10.  Cher has many nicknames in the entertainment.  The most popular is “The Goddess of Pop”.  She has also been called:  The Queen of Reinvention, The Queen of Comebacks and The Queen of Camp

11.  Cher was offered the role of Thelma Dickinson in Thelma & Louise (1991), which went to Geena Davis.

12.  Cher wanted to play Morticia Addams in The Addams Family(1991), but the role went to Anjelica Huston.

13.  Cher is a huge fan of Katharine Hepburn.

14.  Cher’s Oscar®-winning part in Moonstruck (1987) was originally offered to Sally Field, who turned it down.

18.  Cher considers her performance as Rusty Dennis in Mask (1985) to be her finest work onscreen.

19.  Cher, played Sophie (Amanda Seyfried)’s grandmother in Mamma Mia 2, had a cameo in ABBA’s last video in 2004, named ABBA: Our Last Video Ever (2004). The video was released due to ABBA’s 30th anniversary since the winning of the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 (1974). In the video, Cher was an audience member while ABBA, portrayed by puppets, performer their winning song “Waterloo.”

20.  Peter Bogdanovich and Cher fought bitterly on the set of 1985’s Mask, as Bogdanovich found Cher difficult and inexperienced. She also had difficulty sustaining whole takes without breaking character. Bogdanovich compromised by departing from his usual deep-focus, long-take photography by shooting her in close-up to capture her natural charisma, in particular, her sad eyes.
