1. Gene Eliza Teirney was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1920. Her father, a successful insurance broker, set up a corporation, Belle-Tier, to fund and promote her acting career….I think that it worked!

2. Gene Tierney most famous movie role was in 1944’s Laura.  She originally did not want to make the movie but did it anyway under contract obligations….so basically 20th Century Fox made her make the movie.

3. Gene Tierney appeared in five films with Dana Andrews: 1941’s Tobacco Road, 1941’s Belle Starr , 1944’s Laura, 1948’s The Iron Curtain and 1950’s Where the Sidewalk Ends.

4.  Gene Tierney’s only Oscar® nomination was for 1945’s Leave Her To Heaven.  Her incredible performance as one of the movie’s greatest villains is probably why this is one of Martin Scorsese‘s favorite movies.

5.  Gene Tierney was a guest at the house of Tyrone Power on May 19, 1946, when Primula Niven, wife of actor David Niven, fell down a flight of stairs, sustaining injuries that would eventually result in her death.

6.  Gene Tierney was married two times.  She had two children….both daughters.

7.  Gene Tierney’s daughter was born intellectually disabled because Gene had contracted German measles during her only appearance at the Hollywood Canteen. This served as the uncredited inspiration for the plot of the 1962 Agatha Christie novel and later movie 1980’s The Mirror Crack’d.

8.  When Gene Tierney saw herself on screen for the first time, she was horrified by her voice (“I sounded like an angry Minnie Mouse”). She began smoking to lower her voice, but it came at a great price – she died of emphysema.

  1. Just rewatched three Gene Tierney movies. Those movies were LAURA, THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR, and HEAVEN CAN WAIT. Of the three films, I liked THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR the best. Gene is OUTSTANDSING in this picture and, in my opinion, should have won The Oscar for her performance. LAURA is a solid piece of film noir and Gene is good in the movie but I can think of other film noir films that I liked more than LAURA such as OUT OF THE PAST, DOUBLE INDEMINITY, MURDER MY SWEET, and John Garfield’s version of THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. HEAVEN CAN WAIT is a pleasant and professionally made movie. Nothing more and nothing less in my opinion. Gene gives a good performance in HEAVEN CAN WAIT. However, I found the film to be more interesting in the beginning of the picture as opposed to the rest of the movie.

    1. Hey Greg…..thanks for sharing your thoughts on Gene Tierney. I like your thinking on Laura, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir and Heaven Can Wait. If you sort the table by reviews only….they would rank Laura 1st, Ghost & Muir 2nd and Heaven Can Wait 4th. Where The Sidewalk Ends would be the movie not mentioned…that other Dana Andrews movie sits in third place. As for Laura…..I agree….though many many people think it is the best film noir of all-time. I like Laura, but it is not a movie I feel I have to watch every few years. As for Heaven Can Wait…..she plays one of the great villains in movie history. Almost as much “pure evil” as Michael Myers. I would say her performance has me liking the movie more than you. Good feedback.

      1. Bruce, I think I am confused. If memory serves me correctly, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN is the movie where Gene Tierney plays a villiainess who sits back and does nothing while her brother in law drowns. Gene was GREAT in that movie and deserved her Oscar nomination for her performance. in that movie. HEAVEN CAN WAIT is a Ernest Lubitsch comedy where Don Ameche talks about his life to the devil to determine whether or not he should go to heaven or hell when he dies. Gene Tierney plays Don Ameche’s wife in HEAVEN CAN WAIT and her character is rather sympathetic in that film. It’s easy to get the two movies confused with each other because of the similarity of the titles. However HEAVEN CAN WAIT is a comedy that came out in 1943 while LEAVE HER TO HEAVEM is a drama that came out in 1945. Please clarify which film you are referring to. Thanks In Advance.

        1. Hey Greg….you are confused because I am so wrong….lol. You are 100% correct about the right Heaven movies….while I am the one confused. I have only seen Heaven Can Wait once (seen the remake numerous times)….I actually am having a hard time remembering Tierney’s role in the original Sorry I confused you. There are so many movie rattling around in my head…..surprised it does not get mixed up more….lol. Good feedback.
