John Amos (1939-2024) was an American actor. Amos is best known for his role as James Evans, Sr., on the CBS television series Good Times. His movie career is now in it’s 6th decade. I loved John Amos in Good times and the Mary Tyler Moore Show. That leaves the actresses who played Cloris leachman’s daughter and Gavin MacLoed’s wife as the sole surviving cast members.
I haven’t seen any John Amos movies, but I wanted to note that in addition to Good Times, he was also on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I believe he and the actress who played Murray’s wife (Gavin MacLeod) are the last surviving cast members.
Hey Flora, good points about his television career. I just realized he was only 7 years older than Jimmy Walker in Good Times. I vaguely remember him in the Mary Tyler Moore show. I have seen 15 of John’s movies; the highest ranked I haven’t seen is Tamales and Gumbo.
I watched Coming 2 America a second time this week, and the first half hour is fairly good but then it just falls apart after they use up all their cameo appearances.
I have seen 11 of the John Amos movies. Die Hard 2 and Coming To America would be easy favorites. As a child, I remember when Amos’ character died on Good Times. It was a hot topic in my elementary school. He was probably the best part of Coming 2 America….but that is not really saying that much.
