Marie Dressler (1868-1934) was a Canadian-American Oscar® winning actress. After success on stage in vaudeville and comic operas, she became even more successful in film.  In 1914, she was in Charlie Chaplin’s first full-length film comedy, Tillie’s Punctured Romance.  In 1931, she won the Oscar® for Best Actress for Min and Bill (1930).   Marie Dressler’s IMDb page shows 30 acting credits from 1914-1933.  The following table lists 23 Marie Dressler movies and are ranked by 6 different columns of sortable information.

  • Sort Marie Dressler movies by co-stars or in some cases directors
  • Sort Marie Dressler movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
  • Sort Marie Dressler movies by box office rank in the year of release
  • Sort Marie Dressler movies by how the movie was received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Marie Dressler movie received.
  • Sort Marie Dressler movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • Use the search and sort buttons to make this table very interactive.

Marie Dressler is another actress of whom I have long known but have never seen one of her films.

I did once though catch a glimpse of a TV clip from 1933’s Dinner at Eight in which Marie playfully chided Harlow about the loose morals of the great Jean’s screen character.

Marie, who also had a great silent movie career dating as partially demonstrated in the table and comments above way back to 1909, was very popular right up until her death in 1934 being listed as one of the Top US Box Office stars in the Quigley annual polls in for example the 3 consecutive years 1932, 1933 and 1934 and indeed was ranked No 1 in 1932 and 1933.

A considerable achievement for an actress whose appeal did not depend on creating a sexy image on screen.

In view of that and because of other things that I have read about her it seems obvious that Marie was another talented Canuck/American and she therefore well deserves this Cogerson new page.

      Hey Bob
      1. Thanks for checking out our Marie Dressler page.
      2. She might be the least likely movie superstar of all-time. I think today you might be able to compare her to Melissa McCathey or John Candy….though neither of those two stars ever reached the heights that Dressler did.
      3. Her career was a serious of ups and downs (really talked about in the trivia section)…but she went out on top.
      4. When she won her Oscar she was the third straight Canuck to win the Best Actress award.
      5. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Ms. Dressler.

I tell you the internet connection at the Hard Rock Hotel in Biloxi is terrible, this is the first time in days I can access the site. Now I’m sending from Orange Beach, Alabama. Yep Marie has a ton of connections a whole 3 from the original list in 2000.

273 GEORGE COULOURIS Christopher Bean (1933)
515 BESSIE LOVE Chasing Rainbows (1930)
515 BESSIE LOVE The Hollywood Revue of 1929 (1929)
    663 MILTON BERLE Tillie’s Punctured Romance (1914)

Get that 1914 credit for her and Milton Berle when he was 5 or 6.

Marie actually appeared with more Oscar winners then her connections, 4!!!

    LIONEL BARRYMORE Christopher Bean (1933)
LIONEL BARRYMORE Dinner at Eight (1933)

      Hey Dan
      1. Sorry you are having internet issues.
      2. Glad you found some service in Alabama.
      3. We are now having the same issue as we are back on the road this weekend…the hotel’s wi-fi is very spotty.
      4. I figured this would be a very short list…..her last movie was 85 years ago…or 14 American Presidents ago.
      5. Milton was a baby when the first Tillie was made.
      6. Might be a first…more Oscar winners….than Oracle people.
      Good information as always.
