Marlene Dietrich appeared in movies for almost 60 years

Want to know the best Marlene Dietrich movies?  How about the worst Marlene Dietrich movies?  Curious about Marlene Dietrich’s box office grosses or which Marlene Dietrich movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Marlene Dietrich movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which ones got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place…. because we have all of that information and much more.

Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) was an Oscar® nominated German-American actress and singer.  On American Film Institute’s Top 50 Screen Legends list, Dietrich was ranked as the 9th best actress.  Right behind #8 Judy Garland and right before #10 Joan Crawford.  Her film career lasted almost 60 years.  One of the main reasons for such a long successful career was her ability to re-invent herself, professionally and characteristically.  So we figured it was about time to give one the silver screen’s first sex symbols her very own Ultimate Movie Rankings movie page.

Her IMDb page shows 56 acting credits from 1919-1978. This page will rank 30 Marlene Dietrich movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Her German silent films, cameos, television appearances and movies not released in North America were not included in the rankings.

  • Sort Marlene Dietrich movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Marlene Dietrich movies by yearly box office rank

Possibly Interesting Facts About Marlene Dietrich

1. Marlene Dietrich was born Maria Magdalene Dietrich in Berlin, Germany.

2. Marlene Dietrich’s road to stardom Cliff Notes style….she started out as a cabaret singer, then she started appearing in German silent films, next she caught the eye of director, Josef Von Sternberg.  Von Sternberg cast her in the German and English versions of Blue Angel.  Blue Angel was a hit and Dietrich became one of the first sex symbols in film.

3. Marlene Dietrich was nominated for one Oscar® (Morocco) and one Golden Globe® (Witness For The Prosecution).

4. According to the American Film Institute, Marlene Dietrich is the 9th greatest female star of all-time.

5. Marlene Dietrich starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright (1950)….they experienced some friction while making the movie.  Hitchcock provided one of my favorite quotes while researching this page.  On Dietrich…Hitchcock said….”Marlene Dietrich is a professional – a professional actress, a professional dress designer, a professional cameraman.”

6. Marlene Dietrich was married one time in her life. Her marriage to Rudolf Sieber was from 1924 to his death in 1976. They actually only lived together for five years…but they never got divorced.  I wonder if they celebrated their 50th anniversary?  They did have one daughter together….and four grandsons.  Hey BERN1960…I have a piece of Dietrich trivia you might be interested in….I just did not want to put it in this page.

7. Roles Marlene Dietrich turned down or was seriously considered for:  Pal Joey (Rita Hayworth role), All About Eve (Bette Davis role), Whatever Happened To Baby Jane (Joan Crawford role), and Stagecoach (Claire Trevor role).  One role she really wanted but did not get was Irene Dunne’s role in I Remember Mama.

8. Marlene Dietrich was voted the 43rd Greatest Movie Star of all time by Entertainment Weekly.  Dietrich was also the first German actress to be Oscar® nominated.

9. Marlene Dietrich received the U.S. War Department’s ‘Medal of Freedom‘, in 1947, for entertaining American troops in WWII and her strong stand against Naziism.

            Hello Pierre,

For the Garden of Allah, I can give you this informations :

Variety, in july, 21st, 1937 estimated his foreign rentals between $1.5M and $2M.
But if I don’t know precisely the worldwide rentals of the movie, I know it lost $370 000 in the end of 1939, for a cost of $1 586 000, according David Thomson
So I estimate the worldwide rentals at $2 150 000.

Thank you for the dynamic page of Miss Marlene Dietrich
Very interesting as usual and I remark some difference between the new and the last page.
Shanghai Express is not number 1 for 1932…Morocco is now n 1 for the page…
    I like that …movement ..
    Anyway, thanks again…

Hey Pierre….one of the changes we decided was to go with the box office rankings in our website….versus other sources….I am sure that moved Morocco in front of Shanghai Express….glad you like the changes. I might take a small breather after this massive upgrade….but it will be short….got some new pages I want to get published…as the request list has increased over the last month. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Pierre….glad to see another Moonlighting fan. The peak of that series is Mark Harmon’s 3 episode role. At the end of those 3 episodes Bruce and Cybil finally got back together. That was some of the best television I have ever watched……then the series fell completely apart.

I will try and track down that version of Blue Angel. Thanks for the recommendation and the visit.

And here she is: The biggest international star Germany has ever produced: DIETRICH! Needless to say, I’ve seen all of the listed films plus some more (german silents, cameos in Paris when it sizzles, Jigsaw, Follow the Boys, Around the World in 80 Days) plus Maximilian Schells documentary on her, where she at least participated vocally. The only mayor film I haven’t seen is the Documentary on Adolf Hitler, The Black Fox, which Dietrich narrated. I can’t make up my mind what my favorite movie is- her von Sternberg films are always visually stunning, often downright stupid scriptwise, her later films are a mixed bag- from the boring Angel to the hilariously funny Desire or the tight Wilder Drama Witness for the prosecution. I have a soft spot for her less successful movies, though: I always loved Stage Fright, I am very fond of Flame of New Orleans, and I just recently revisited Welles’ Touch of Evil in the reconstructed version- no matter how small her part here, I agree with her when she calls her Tana her best performance. I also love to listen to her records- never close to a great singer, but always a keen interpeter of the lyrics…I guess I coud go on and on about her. One comment on her breakthrough movie The Blue Angel. I have seen both the original german version and the one made for the international market in english. The german version is a milestone, the international version looses a lot compared to the original. ‘nough said now, I am just ashamed that my fellow germans called her a traitor right until her death.

Hey Lupino….I agree Dietrich is easily the biggest international star from Germany. Congrats on acing the Dietrich tally….I have that with Bruce Willis movies….which lately has been a severe challenge because his movies have slipped into low budget horrible movies. Sounds like you are a serious Dietrich fan….like your mini-reviews on your favorites. Her part in Touch of Evil is small…..but they gave her some of the best and most memorable lines in the movie. She and Hitch did not get along while making Stage Fright….but that dislike did not stop them from creating another great Dietrich role.

Interesting about how you like her music too. Her music career is pretty much forgotten over here. Heck before you mentioned it in your comment…I was not really aware she had many records out there. As for The Blue Angel…I have only seen the English version….so I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the original. That is sad that she was considered a traitor……good comment….thanks for stopping by and talking Dietrich.

        Hey Cogerson,

thanks for all your kind replies. You are right, I like Dietrich a lot…but then I really love most of the old moviestars (not just Dietrich, Grant and Sidney). About Bruce Willis- I remember seeing him in Die Hard for the first time, and although Action movies were never my favorite genre, I really liked that one a lot. Unfortunatly I never had the chance to see him in his TV series battling Cybill Shepherd, but I’ve seen a lot of his movies and usually enjoy his performances. I think he is more versatile than he is given credit for. Ending up in B pictures is something he doesn’t deserve, but then it happened to the best of them even in the old days- Jennifer Jones or Joan Fontaine, Dana Andrews or Linda Darnell come to mind, but even the likes of Crawford, Davis.

Hey Lupino….well if you like the classic stars then I think you will find countless of them on this website. We try to rotate between doing a current star and a classic star…so generally about every 4 or 5 days you will see a new classic star pop up on the “newest pages”.

As for Bruce…I agree with you…and glad to see you have some fond memories of him too. Moonlightin

Moonlighting was one of the best tv shows I have ever watched…at least the first two and half years of that show. As for his shift to B movies….I know it happens to most actors and actresses..but I was hoping Bruce would avoid that….maybe Death Wish will bring him back to the top.
