UMR Movie Review of Soldier of Fortune (1955)

This one often feels like a remake of Casablanca. You get Clark Gable in the Bogart/anti-hero role, Susan Hayward in the Bergman/married woman role, Michael Rennie in the Raines/cop role, you get Gene Barry in the Henreid/husband-political hero role, you get Hong Kong instead of Casablanca. About the only thing missing is Sam playing the piano. Another issue is that this one is nowhere near as good as that classic. Gable is barely in the first half of the movie. Hayward misses the grand finale. Speaking of the grand finale….it is a whimper versus a bang. Final thought: A pretty dull movie that Gable and Hayward fans might enjoy.
