UMR Movie Review of Star Wars:The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Why I saw this one? Been going to theaters to see every Star Wars movies for over 40 years. Ok…..I admit I skipped Solo when it was in theaters.

What is this one about? The surviving Resistance faces the First Order once more in the final chapter of the Skywalker saga.

My thoughts on this one? Hmmm….I really really disliked the first half of this movie. I thought the story was going nowhere, the action scenes were boring and not very suspenseful. Things got slightly better in the middle of the movie. That was mainly due to callbacks to other better Star Wars movies and the actors that made Star Wars famous.

When looking at the new cast members, the only story line in the entire new Disney trilogy that grabbed my interest was the Adam Driver/Daisy Ridley relationship. The rest of the story lines fell flat for me, and the supposed big payoffs in this finale never happened for me. Of all the Star Wars movies, this is down at the bottom of my rankings with Attack Of The Clones. Final thought: Movie has a few nice moments….but they are few and far between.

First Happy Holidays to you and yours and all the other people that contribute on this website.

I saw Star Wars this morning (nothing like (9:15 am showings) and while there was a good audience I was the only one in the back row.

To me it seemed like a lot of generic explosions, a couple of surprises, one which I liked and it was sort of sentimental at the end. On the other hand too many people change sides too often and the special effects are well nothing special anymore (not counting scenes involving humans), it could be from 1985.. I think Adam Driver has become a bigger star since the first film but outside of Murder on the Orient Express what have we seen Daisy Ridley in? I give it 2 1/2 stars out of 4 or 5 out of 10 on the IMDB. Sad to say that’s the same rating I gave Cats.

Hey Dan…thanks for the mini-review of Star Wars and the holiday wishes. I agree with you on the special effects in The Rise of Skywalker. I was so bored watching the desert chase scene….there was no suspense….no wonder…..it was like watching a race under caution. Your thought….”a couple of surprises, one which I liked and it was sort of sentimental at the end.”…..is how I think as well. I agree with you about Driver becoming the biggest star from this trilogy. I just watched Marriage Story last night….he is amazing in that movie….and right now the performance I hope wins the Oscar. Sorry you saw Cats….lol. Good stuff as always.

This film has sort of gotten worse the more I think about it. They should have ended with Last Jedi, and I would have been okay with it

Hey Tanner…..Good points. I actually liked The Last Jedi…mainly because it felt like something new. Rise of Skywalker seemed very familiar to me….which was one of my main complaints about The Force Awakens. Thanks for stopping by.

I haven’t seen it yet Bruce, maybe next week. Too crowded this week.

So you weren’t that enthused about the final episode of the Skywalker saga. There has been a very mixed response to this film. The impression I’m getting is that Abrams rushed into this and was making things up as he went along. Yes I’ve looked under every spoiler and know about the big reveals and surprise appearances. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but the first three 1977-1983 will always be my Star Wars favorites.

Hey Steve……overall…..it has some good moments…..but this trilogy ends with a wimper versus a bang. I do not really think there are many spoilers in the movie….none of the surprise appearances really surprised me….and Rey’s bloodline was guessed by many….so that did not knock me off my feet either. Stars Wars 1 and 2 will forever be the cream of the crop. Maybe Stars 10 through 12 will be better…..but I can see them thinking…..let’s kill off Poe in 10, Finn in 11 and Rey in 12…..while creating three new characters to kill off in 13, 14 and 15. Hope I am wrong. Good stuff…hope you had a good holiday.
