  1. Added Steve’s Daryl Hannah You Tube Video To This Page….My thoughts on his video and Ms. Hannah….found on Steve’s channel.

“I have seen 17 of the movies listed on the video. Hannah had a great 1980s. Since then….things have not been as impressive….but what a 1980s she had….#7 Splash, #8 Roxanne #1 Bladerunner, #14 Legal Eagles and #4 Wall Street. Favorites would be The Bladerunner and Roxanne made a big Splash. I did not really enjoy the Kill Bill movies….especially Volume 1. I thought she was good in a supporting role in Northfolk….that movie has many memorable scenes…..like one that involved a guy nailing his feet to his property. Good video. Voted up and shared.”

    1. Hi Bruce, it’s been ages since I last watched Splash and Roxanne and they were popular in my video renting days. She nearly finished off Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, and she was lethal in Kill Bill too. Your tally 17, mine 10 and Flora 6. Thanks for the comment, vote and share, much appreciated.

  2. HI STEVE I tend to mix up Daryl with a number of other actresses – for example with Dyan Cannon who married Archie Leach. I most remember Daryl for Blade Runner and Legal Eagles, otherwise her filmography is rather obscure to me, so your video is of special interest to me and indeed I have had to view it 3 times this afternoon so that some of the movies could sink in.

Best POSTERS 1/Steel Magnolias 2/Crazy People 3/Two Much 4/Ginger bread Men 5/raunchy one for Real Blonde 6/both for Memoirs of Invisible Man 7/North Fork 8/The Fury 9/Roxanne 10/2 sexy ones for Splash 11/Kill Bill One 12/Summer Lovers 13/Pope Of Greenwich Village 14/My Favourite Martian and 15/stunner for Blade Runner.

I loved your run of classy stills and my pick of them are 1/My Favourite Martian 2/very saucy one for Summer Lovers 3/sexy one for Clan of the Cave Bear 4/with Chevy 5/with “hell-raiser” O’Toole 6/with Redford 7/with Steve Martin 8/with Charlie Sheen 9/Kill Bill One 10/sexy in black and 11/two stunners from Blade Runner.

Daryl never got any Master recognition and of course where Hirsh doesn’t go WH often does not try to follow so yours is really the first profile of Hannah’s career that has come to my attention and a fine one it is too to the tune of a 98% rating in my book. IMDB credits Daryl with 6 acting awards and 11 noms and her net worth is said to be $20 million.

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for reviewing my Daryl Hannah video, appreciate the generous review and info. Glad you enjoyed the picture gallery.

Daryl Hannah doesn’t get much love these days, but for a while back in the 1980s she was a screen goddess, top totty for boys of all ages. Never a great actress but she sure looked great, and tall too. But it didn’t last. Ditto Geena Davis, Sharon Stone, Kim Basinger, Demi Moore etc etc

Daryl has one film scoring 10 out of 10 – Blade Runner – Ridley Scott’s classic was re-evaluated 20 years after it’s release as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, it has even been dubbed the ‘Citizen Kane’ of science fiction. When it first came out though the general impression from critics and moviegoers was ‘meh’.

You could say the same thing for Citizen Kane as well, decades after its original release it was anointed ‘greatest film ever’ by critics and film buffs, though currently a Hitchcock masterpiece holds that title.

      A top 40 up next.

      1. HI STEVE Thanks for the feedback and additional information.

I have seen Daryl in just 5 movies -Blade Runner, Legal Eagles, Wall Street, Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old men. Kill Bill was never my cup of tea. I tried to watch one of them but turned off. I am not a Tarantino fan and detested Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction but my Laddie-hating son adores them both. Sadly the heyday of Daryl that you mention largely passed me by.

Rutger Hauer debuted in Stallone’s Nighthawks in 1981, and 1982’s Blade Runner which you highlight was his 2nd movie. He was terrific in it [and in Nighthawks] and looked set for big things.

Since then though he has been in just two movies that have been box office hits, both in 2005: Batman Begins and Sin City.

In the first of those he had a supporting role and did not get billed among the main stars; and in the 2nd he was part of a large ensemble cast and was buried among names like Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba and Elijah Wood.

When I used to haunt the old video libraries Rutger was known within the film industry and video store owners as The King of the Videos.

        1. Hi Bob, Rutger Hauer was a favorite of mine back in my video renting days, it was a bit sad seeing him take on smaller roles in Batman Begins and Sin City but thats the way it goes.

He was very good in Nighthawks and Blade Runner, a more than worthy adversary for Stallone and Ford.

I may do a video on him later this year, Mickey Rourke would be a good subject too.

The great Max Von Sydow? What a career! Too many Swedish films though… unless I ignore most of them. 🙂

          1. HI STEVE

I for one would love to see you do videos of Rutger, Mickey and Max.

It might make a good change of subject matter to see a video that had a lot of foreign language movies in it and indeed your foreign language posters always have great appeal for me.

Also if the Exorcist did drop in he might exorcise The Devil from this site. You know whom I regard as Satan, and for all of the faults of both of you I am not thinking of you and WH!

I’m looking forward to another Big 40 – meanwhile take care.

PS: Mickey’s career, which had much early promise, also took a sad path in my view.

      2. So Ms. Daryl Hannah has a Steve You Tube video. I will be checking out and commenting on that video very shortly. Good stuff.

  3. In my perception Sharon Stone has been foremost among those actresses who at her peak had a beautiful face AND overall raunchy sex appeal. Unfortunately her peak did not last long and for me she confirms my own impression that most actresses today are in one way or another over-hyped, over promoted and overpaid.

IMDB credits her with 24 acting awards and 37 nominations and her net worth is reported as $60 million. Yet her box office stats unequivocally show that she has been probably just about 2 or 3 movies away from being a one-hit wonder. The Work Horse has so far ignored her but Box office Mojo quotes her adjusted domestic gross as $1.5 billion over 35 movies, a paltry average of about $43 million per movie.

Apart from Basic Instinct only one of her CREDITED movies since that film has crashed the $100 million barrier in adjusted dollars domestically, Stallone’s 1994 The Specialist; she has only ever had 3 credited movies in total that broke that 100 million barrier; and the last commercial hit she was in was 21 years ago, 1998’s Antz.

Even then hers was just a voice role in an ensemble movie, and Box Office Mojo doesn’t think her contribution sufficient enough to credit her with the movie’s gross so that the last reasonably successful credited commercial hit that she had was probably DeNiro’s 1995 Casino. Some of her most recent flicks have gone straight to video.

    1. Like the character in the famous novel The Hired Hand Sharon could be said to have been “a day late and a dollar short”. Her career was just getting underway when The Master’s 1983 book was sending shock waves through the film world so she missed being potentially tested in arguably the greatest court of critical opinion of them all; and now at the other end of her career she may well have missed Work Horse Love by the absence of her commercial success over the past 2 decades. However in view of her sexiness that career does deserve some recognition despite her mayfly existence at the very top, so I welcome your video with a 98% rating, though no prizes for guessing which posters/stills drew the highest markings from me!

Best POSTERS for me are (1) Basic Instinct 2 (2) two for Quatermain (3) 1st one for Scissors the first movie I ever saw her in (4) Gloria (5) Action Jackson (6) Sliver (7) Intersection [a remake of the 1970 Claude Sautet French scene in Basic Instinct film Les choses de la vie starring Romy Schneider (8) Deadly Blessing (9) Broke Flowers (10) The Mighty (11) Catwoman (12) Police Academy 4 (13) Cold Creek Manor(14) Total Recall and Diabolique. The last named was an awful flop for Stone but conversely the film that it was a remake of is an award winner regarded as a masterpiece, Henri-Georges Cluzot’s 1955 Les Diaboliques [translated as The Fiends, its AKA over here starring the great ‘left wing’ actress Simone Signoret.

Classy STILLS I thought are (1) Catwoman (2) Police Academy 4 (3) Cold Creek Manor (4) 2 excellent ones with Quatermian in King Solomon’s Mines (5) Sliver (6) with Richard Gere (7) The Specialist (8) with Dustin – didn’t do well at box office especially overseas (9) Quick and the Dead ensemble – DiCaprio in a supporting role was then on the cusp of mega stardom (10) Broken Flowers (11) 2 dazzlers from Casino and last but certainly not least! (12) THAT famous provocative one from Basic Instinct that earned Sharon the nickname [certainly over here] “Sharon No Underwear Stone” – top that pose with your shirt off if you can Jason Statham!]

      1. STEVE

The middle paragraph of Part 2 got into a bit of a mess, mixing up Basic Instinct and Intersection. Apologies but here is the duly corrected paragraph. I didn’t spot the gobbledegook until after the correction button had run out. Still I gather that even Shakespeare had to put out out corrections to some of his work!

        1. Good stuff as always Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, comments, info and trivia, much appreciated. Glad you liked the posters and stills.

Sharon Stone’s career suddenly shot up at the start of the 1990s after spending the whole of the 1980s as the wife or girlfriend in average to bad films. But by the 2000s her star had waned. Like we noted before the shelf life for pretty young actresses is limited, compared lets say to ‘pretty’ young actors. Not really fair is it?

There aren’t any films scoring 10 or 9 out of 10 from my sources but there are 7 films scoring 8 out of 10 including Casino, Total Recall and Basic Instinct.

Casino tops IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes charts, probably Bruce’s chart too when he gets round to doing a Sharon Stone page. I think she’s been on the UMR request list for years now.

“Ava Gardner was the most beautiful woman in the world, and it’s wonderful that she didn’t cut up her face. She addressed aging by picking up her chin and receiving the light in a better way. And she looked like a woman. She never tried to look like a girl.”

“I was this cute young girl with a nice ass who was a terrible actress. But I’ve worked real hard to become a good actress and now I think I’m starting to reap the benefits of that hard work.”

          1. HI STEVE Thanks for the feedback. When Laddie started to slip in the mid- 1950s one cynical critic quipped that Alan was “looking for another Shane” to restore his fortunes.

For her part Sharon was determined to get Basic Instinct 2 up and running and when the studios were dragging their feet about the project she took them to court and got an out of court settlement that enabled the film to proceed.

One of the reasons for the original delay in the project was a dispute over nudity – the producers apparently wanted Sharon to show us less of herself but naughty Sharon wanted to show MORE!

Anyway it was released in 2006 with the following comparative result-

            Basic Instinct [One] 1992
$763 million adjusted worldwide gross toady [Bruce’s figure]

            Basic Instinct [2] 2006
$51 million adjusted worldwide gross today [per Box Office Mojo]

The studios would of course have got only about half of the worldwide gross, the cinemas retaining the rest, so the financial backers suffered a massive lost. The budget for the movie had been a whopping $70 million, about $88 million in todays money plus promotion and other distribution costs.

Therefore it would almost certainly have been cheaper for them to let Sharon go ahead with her litigation. One possible reason for the film doing so poorly was that Michael Douglas refused to reprise his role saying he had become too old for the part.

Take care and have a good weekend.

  4. “Nice new video…thinking I have a chance to be 20 for 20. Nope fall out at #19….that did not last long. A big no for #18 as well. Maybe the Top 17? Another miss at #14. Ok I give up. Favorites would include #13 Earth Girls Are Easy….fun silly movie…one of Jim Carrey’s first big roles. #9 Quick Change…watch this bank heist movie pretty often. #8 The Long Kiss Goodnight….Sam L. Jackson says this is one of his favorite movies. #7 Fletch….the pinnacle of Chevy Chase’s movie career. #6 A League of Their Own….Tom Hanks comeback movie….he was on a downspin before appearing in this blockbuster. And #4 Beetejuice….comedy classic. Not a huge fan of her Top 3…though The Fly is well done. So my final tally count is 15….or 75%…a far cry from 100%. Voted up and shared.” – Our comment on Steve’s You Tube Channel….plus the video is listed here.

    1. Hi Bruce, you beat my tally, I’ve seen 14 out of 20, Flora 5.

I was surprised Geena Davis made so few movies. I saw Quick Change once back in the 90s and that was it I think. The one with Bill Murray dressed as a clown? Yeah it wasn’t a favorite. Maybe I have a phobia of circus clowns? 🙂 Thanks for the comment, vote and share, much appreciated.

  5. Anyway for what it’s worth I’ve been going over the notes and ratings from me that I’ve kept back on about a dozen of your videos over the past 4 months. My ratings have all been in the 97.5 – 98.5% range but it has now struck me from my hastily dashed comments at the time of viewing that the very highest ratings from me have gone to your racier posters and if those posters had been more circumspect my overall ratings in many cases might well have been in the 96.0-97.5% bracket. Obviously there had to be enough of the raunchy [usually 99% marked by me ] posters to drag up my markings for the slightly lower rated selections.

Whether that says more about me than about your videos or vice-versa is an open question! However it did strike me, from some of my private exclamations as I poured over those admittedly small sample of my notes over the years, that many of your presentations contained females in attractive poses. If my impressions ARE correct do they reflect a calculated or coincidental approach on your part?

    1. Hi Bob, well I enjoy looking at attractive women as much as the next man. When I see a sexy photo of an actress while compiling a video it will go to the top of the ‘use this one’ pile. 😉

But I can’t go too far otherwise youtube will slap an X rating on my video and no one would see it. To be fair to all sexes I also include stills of actors with their shirts off on occasion. Alan Ladd seems to have had it in his contract to take his shirt off in every other film, even on some of the posters!

It also depends on the actress, it’s hard to find sexy photos of Bette Davis or Olivia de Havilland, but it’s easy for sex goddesses like Hedy Lamarr and Marilyn Monroe. Even a close up of their faces can seem erotic.

      1. HI STEVE Thanks for clarifying matters. When one considers what can be shown publicly in cinemas and on the television these days the censorship that you site providers are controlled by does seem a bit excessive.

However personally I found the sophisticated well-dressed women of the classic era sexier than many of today’s scantily-dressed actresses; and whilst I can’t speak for the young women of my generation it would not surprise me if a lot of them found a dapper Ladd in slouched hat, smart suit and dressy trench coat more appealing that Jason with his shirt off.

Bette was a stunner when very young but her features hardened significantly when she got older whilst Crawford kept her good looks for longer in my view.

However it doesn’t matter how good or sexy actresses in particular look today according to W o C’s survey because The Curse of 39 gets them on average. By that she was not referring to Hirsch as a Curse when he was 39 [he was a curse at every age] but the fact that when most modern actresses reach 39 their careers start to decline steeply.

W o C was able to use stats to prove the latter – certainly she has learned a lot from that stats geek of a husband of hers! Thomas Gray in his famous Elegy put it in a more morbid way to make a general point-

The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e’er gave,
        Awaits alike the inevitable hour:-
The paths of glory lead but to the grave.
