UMR Review of Tenet (2020)
Why I watched this movie? (1) Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors working today. (2) The trailer looked interesting. (3) Sir Michael Caine…this was the 102nd Caine movie I have seen.
What is this movie about? Armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, a Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.
My thoughts on this one? On the good side….this is a well made, very original movie and has my favorite Robert Pattinson performance. On the negative side….it’s characters are somewhat hard to like as we know nothing about them. The story is very confusing and very hard to follow. After the movie was over, it took watching about 2 hours of YouTube videos of Tenet explanations to get a good grasp of what I had just seen. I know Nolan has his admirers, but I should not have to spend that much time after watching a movie to understand it. I suspect that I will enjoy the movie more on a second viewing….but unlike a movie like The Sixth Sense, I do not have a strong urge to see that second viewing anytime soon.
Final thought: I am glad I saw the movie…..but this is not one of Nolan’s better movies.
