UMR Review of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)

This was the first Nicolas Cage movie I have seen in theaters since the original The Croods.  It is the first live action Cage movie that I saw in theaters since National Treasure 2.  That was 15 years ago! In this one, Cage plays Nicolas Cage.

My second oldest son has been looking forward to this one ever since the trailer oh so many months ago.   There are some good things and some not so good things in this movie.  The good:  (1) Cage and Pedro Pascal are a great screen team. (2)  The story is very original.  (3)  The Cage “Easter Eggs” were fun finding as I watched the movie.  FYI – I missed one about The Wicker Man.  My son opened my eyes on that one.  (4)  Movie wraps up pretty nicely.

There are however so weaknesses.  (1) Some of the plot twists were very, very easy to figure out.  (2)  The action scenes are pretty weak…I actually wish they would have skipped those scenes.  (3)  The story line revolving around Cage’s ex-wife and daughter seemed out of place in the movie and were not too convincing.  (4)  The movie was not nearly as funny as I was expecting.

Final thought:  An enjoyable movie but not as good as I was hoping for.   So put me down for a 3.5 Letterboxd review…but with a “like” button.
