This movie page looks at 1947 Top Box Office Movies. Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult. For somebody looking for box office information on 1947 it is very very frustrating. Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 33,000 movies. So we figured we would show all the 1947 movies in our database.
To make this list a movie had to be made in 1947. Obviously many movies made in 1946 earned box office dollars in 1947. On the other side many movies made in 1947 made money in 1948 and later. This page will looks at 152 1947 Top Box Office Movies. The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.
The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1947 that are in our database. Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete. We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

I’m also somewhat surprised to see Welcome Stranger at the top of the 1947 list in terms of box office returns. While I’m not an expert on Bing Crosby I don’t think it was one of his most memorable films. Together with the Road to Rio, Bing’s 2 films on the list grossed over $650 million in adjusted box office – no wonder, he again topped the quigley poll’s top money-making stars for the year!
But for me, 1947 is more significant as being the year when Robert Mitchum (who incidentally never made the top 10 in the quigley poll) really broke out as a major star, with 3 memorable classics on this list: Out of the Past, Crossfire and Pursued. Out of the Past has some of the best dialogue I have seen in cinema and Mitchum delivers a great performance. My other favorites on this list are The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Odd Man Out, Black Narcissus, Mr. Verdoux and Gentlemen’s Agreement .
…and for my 9-year old daughter, I would also add Miracle on 34th Street – apparently a timeless classic!
Miracle on 34th Street….a cult classic (it is listed in the Danny Peary Cult Movie books)….has aged very very nicely. Kudos to your 9 year old for liking….gasp…a black and white movie…lol.
…well, our DVD of Miracle on 34th street has both the B&W and colored versions, and I admit we usually play the latter – Still, the colors are rather pale, so it almost qualifies as B&W 🙂
By the way, I just noticed that Great Expectations appears both in the 1947 and 1946 lists – according to IMDB it was released in December 1946 in London, but in 1947 in the US. Not sure if you have a practice to cover such cases! Thanks for your responses and comments.
Hey Phil….I generally try and go with IMDb. I have noticed that Variety regularly messes up their years. I need to delete Great Expectations from my 1946 page.
Hey…black and white or added color…..impressive that your 9 year old is checking out a movie that is 70 years old. 🙂
Hey Phil. Variety lists Welcome Stranger as the 4th biggest hit of 1947…..but the first three movies were made in 1946…..so when you take away those 3….Welcome Stranger jumps to the Top Spot. I think it is the power of Bing Crosby….which is pretty much forgotten. The man was the Top Star for 5 straight years…and Welcome Stranger was made in that peak 5 year span.
Good point about Mitchum. I agree with you about Out of the Past…..my favorites seem for some reason to always end up with a picture on the webpage…not sure how that happens…lol. I have seen and liked all of your favorites with the exception of Odd Man Out…which I have yet to see. Thanks for the comment.
So many of my favorites made close to no money…sometimes I don’t understand this business 😉
Monsieur Verdoux is one of those rare films full of black humor that I thoroughly enjoy. The secret beyond the Door and The Woman on the Beach are pretty good in my opinion, too. Worst of all, one of my fav fantasies, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, did only fair business, as did Ivy, one of my fav Joan Fontaine movies. I am not the biggest Tyrone Power fan, but in Nightmare Alley he really surprised me and I love so many aspects about that movie. Same goes for The lost Moment, an often shown movie in and thus a favorite since my childhood. Not a big western fan, but I like Ramrod and the way the noir genre was incorporated into the Story via “dark Blonde” Veronica Lake. I’d also like to mention High Wall, The Red House, Out of the Past, A Double Life, Pursued, Dark Passage, The Shocking Miss Pilgrim (one of the best, though not the most successful Betty Grable films), two wonderful Brits, Black Narcissus and Great Expectation, Life with Father and two of my favourite Christmas movies, Miracle on 34th Street and The Bishop’s Wife. I’ve seen 79 movies listed here, and to this day never ever heard of Welcome Stranger.
Thank you for another box office year.
To give Miss Crawford what is rightfully hers: I forgot to mention Possessed, I remember that she blew me away in the opening scene the first time I saw that film.
LUPINO
“To give Miss Crawford what is rightfully hers —she blew me away in the opening scene—”
1 never thought that I would hear such music to my ears from another on this site. However you are taking a big chance because I once thought I might well be banned from the site for singing Joan’s praises, which on this site seems to be almost regarded as equivalent to the proverbial swearing in church. So thanks for making my weekend Lupin as Joan is my 2nd favourite actress after Deanna Durbin.
LUPINO
Apologies for omitting the ‘O’ from your name at its 2nd mention BOB
🙂
Hello Bob,
to me Crawford has always been one of the Greats of Hollywood’s Golden Era. Before I knew actresses like Sylvia Sidney and Margaret Sullavan, it was Crawford, Davis Hepburn for me. As I already said on Crawford’s own UMR page, I do prefer her 40’s and 50’s films to her earlier work, but I love her Flaemmchen in Grand Hotel, her Sadie Thompson in Rain (I know, critics of the day almost lynched her) and of course her Crystal in The Women. One of the most enduring careers in Hollywood, a lot of classic films and a famous feud to nurture the myth for years to come – who could deny Joan her place in the pantheon of Hollywood’s Greats?
LUPINO
“Who could deny Joan her place in the pantheon of greats?” you ask. I could name you three regulars of this site without having to think about it. However she is I think 10th on AFI’s Legends list so all’s well that ends well as the saying goes. Thanks for your further comments which chime with my own thoughts. As as matter of interest here are my own Top 20 favourite greatest favourite stars of all time in rank order.

BOB,
would love to give you my list – but I can’t. For more than 4 decades now my favorite hobby is watching and reading (about) old movies and the people who made them. My favorites have changed over the years, with myself getting more knowledgable and more critical with what I see. Still, somehow they all managed to keep their place on my personal list, and I really don’t KNOW who my favorite actresses are. It is a little easier with the men: Stewart, Grant and Clift are way up there, but then I also love Cooper, Bogarde, Peck, Joseph Cotten, Sidney Poitier, James Mason, Denzel Washington, Idris Elba… even Errol Flynn…plus some 😉
Deanna Durbin is not really known here in germany, the only 2 of her movies I have ever seen on telly are Christmas Holiday and It started with Eve. Liked them both. Since then, I found some of her movies on DVD in England, and have watched quite a few. The only actor on your list I can’t warm up to is Audie Murphy.
HI AGAIN LUPINO
Thanks for giving an insight into how you see things overall. Very interesting BOB
Hey Bob…..glad to see Sir Michael on your Top 20….at least you got one right…..lol. Actually it is a quality list filled with lots of legends.
Hey Bob…we here at UMR think Joan Crawford is an all time great. We are on high standing at the Joan Crawford Chat Room on Facebook. Sorry if we have not given her more credit…especially since her page has been one of our most popular ones.:)
I agree Lupino, Joan Crawford is outstanding in Possessed.
Hey Lupino…..I think most of the movies you mentioned all got great reviews….so even if they did not make much money, the consensus is they are good movies. Your 79 movies only trails Dan in our tally contest.
Many of the movies you mentioned I have not seen…..I will have to check them out. Thanks for the feedback. 🙂
I have seen 38 movies. Favourite movies include:
Out of the Past
Dark Passage
Crossfire
The Ghost and Mrs.Muir
Black Narcissis
The Bishop’s Wife
The Lady From Shanhgai
Lady in theLake
Miracle on 34th Street

Hey Flora…..thanks for your comment, visit and tally count. 38 tops Steve’s 30 and my 26.
Of your favorites, I have seen them all except for Lady in the Lake…..the rest I enjoyed as well. 🙂
I’ve seen 30 of the 132 films listed here. Favorites include – Black Narcissus, Road to Rio, My Favorite Brunette, Miracle on 34th Street, Kiss of Death, Out of the Past, Great Expectations (1946 in the UK) and Unconquered.
Welcome Stranger the biggest box office hit of the year? Never heard of it.
Good to see ‘Out of the Past’ top the critics chart, retitled ‘Build My Gallows High’ here in the UK, the title of the novel.
Gentleman’s Agreement tops the UMR chart, I watched it once didn’t like it, The Bishop’s Wife isn’t a favorite either but I do have a copy of it.
Looking at my datafiles I have 41 films from 1947 in my movie collection.

1947 was a bad year for fans of sci-fi, fantasy and horror cinema. 1950 would kick-start the glorious golden age of science fiction movies, and it was a good decade for horror films too, especially British.
Another expert movie page Bruce. Voted Up!
Hey Steve

2. Sorry it took so long to respond back.

5. Sorry this was a bad year for sci-if movies.
