Football Movies

Want to know the best Football Movies?  How about the worst Football Movies?  Curious about Football Movies did at the box office or which Football Movies picked up the most Oscar® nominations and Oscar® wins? Need to know which Football Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

This page represents part 2 in a series of pages that are trying to identify the Top 100 Sports Movies. This page will rank (currently 56 movies) football movies from Best to Worst by 4 different columns of sortable information.

To be considered for the page the movie had to be released at movie theaters. 1971’s Brian’s Song made the list because after its very successful television debut, the movie was released to theaters after being shown on public television. Brian’s Song did not do well at the theater but it did get released for a very short time.  I am sure there are many more football movies out there, but these selected movies seem to the ones that got major releases in theaters.

Football Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

Football Movies Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Football Movies by stars of the movies
  • Sort Football Movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
  • Sort Football Movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort by how Football Movies were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Football Movie received.
  • Sort Football Movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. great fun. john goldfarb please come home is not on list. from a shirley maclaine fan. i saw 34, including 16 of top 20. i love your top 7. sad to see sandler with 2 of top 10 but at least the good longest yard ranked higher.

    1. Hey Steve Lionsmane…..yep…..there was a big game tonight….we had our 25th straight SuperBowl party tonight…a good time was had by all. Basically it is our World Cup….but it happens every year. Good stuff.

  2. What about The Freshman with Harold Lloyd?

There is also a decent old b/w film with Victor Mature as an aging NFL quarterback with a bad heart and a greedy and unfaithful wife who eggs him into playing past his expiration date as an athlete.

Number One has Chuck Heston as another past it quarterback who suffers one sack too many from the Dallas Doomsday Defense, well named in this case.

    1. I forgot to mention that the Victor Mature film is Easy Living.

I noticed that Number One is on your list, but I still wanted to comment on it.

      1. Hey John….thanks for listing the name of the Mature movie….I will have to check out Easy Living….thanks for the suggestion.

    2. Hey John….I wanted to include The Freshman…but I struck out when it came to box office research….so it did not make the page. Mmmmm…I have actually seen Heston in Number One…but I have never even heard of the Victor Mature football movie….I will have to check that one out.

This page was part of a massive project I did almost 6 years…..for awhile it was part of the most successful pages on our website. Thanks for the comment and the visit.

  3. Nice update to your page. I have not seen many of these movies. But I have seen a few of the older ones. Keep up the good work.
