This is the first step of a puzzle that has lots of pieces……but should be pretty interesting when it is finished. We have sarcastically named this project….”Screw you Paramount, we will figure out your box office grosses anyway!” Why this name? Well….when researching box office numbers for movies made before 1980… Paramount movies are easily the most difficult movies to research and often no information at all is found.
Let’s take a minute to talk about P.S. Harrison. Mr. Harrison published a New York City-based motion picture trade journal published weekly from 1919 to 1962. The typical issue was four letter-size pages sent to subscribers under a second-class mail permit. In those issues they would predict how a movie would perform at the box office and then report how the movie actually did at the box office. Sadly they did not publish box office numbers….but did rank the movies in 8 different categories…ranging from Excellent to Poor.
So here is our plan. We are going to take all of the Harrison Report’s box office evaluations and match them with as many “known” box office rental numbers that we have in our database. In theory….this will create a way to put a box office number to their evaluation. Yes it will still be an estimation….but it will really help pinpoint how a movie did….especially for movies in the 1930s and 1940s when most movies did not reach $1.0 million in rentals. So far things are look promising. We have “matched” 96 1935 movies…and sure enough the averages go down as we go from Excellent to Poor.
The following table shows the Harrison Report ratings for many movies made between 1934 and 1936. If interested in seeing the actual Harrison Report….please follow this link. Thanks to Steve Lensman for sharing this link with us many moons ago. This project might take awhile….but we figured we would share the first step. You will see some movies listed more than once…that just means that the Harrison Report listed the movie more than once.

Hey Pierre….this was one project that got to close to the shore….hit some big rocks ….and suck the ship. Turned out to be way too difficult…so it was abandoned. I still use the Harrison Reports….just never got my information organized enough to complete the project. Maybe one day I will finish it….but right now I do not see it happening. Sorry about that.

Hey Nancy…..yes these ratings are from the theater owners back in the mid 1930s….it is not an exact science…but I am finding it useful when comparing movies with the same rating. This is the beginning of a huge project….though progress has slowed since this first segment.
1 Very rewarding Bruce if you can make good headway with it. As some historian remarked about Alexander the Great you have “looked about for fresh worlds to conquer.”
2 As I’ve said I used a matching system for my provisional Bogie update. I would see how you had adjusted a figure for a given year in an update that you’d already done and then apply that adjustment pro-rata to your old Bogie figure or figures for the same year. With the exception of Caine*** it worked pretty well and when I got your actual figures I had to make only small adjustments to my database for the other confirmed Bogie inflated grosses.
3. However of course I had of the advantage of knowing your existing figures and I eventually got your new figures, which enabled me to confirm the accuracy or otherwise of my adjustments. It will be very interesting to see how you get on with the project.

Really happy the way 1935 turned out. 1936 is looking strong too….for the first time I have an idea of how much Cary Grant’s The Last Outpost….that has been a Holy Grail movie for me for a very longtime…..and I have never even seen the movie. Just want to have my Cary Grant page 100% done….still a few movies to go.
Glad to see all the behind the scenes stuff has been read…and glad to see you were able to figure out how to get Bogie’s numbers before I did.
The re-issue problem is probably in our database many times….when it comes to Disney movies…I just go straight to BoxOfficeMojo and use their numbers.
