John Mahoney Movies

Want to know the best John Mahoney movies?  How about the worst John Mahoney movies?  Curious about John Mahoney box office grosses or which John Mahoney movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which John Mahoney movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.  John Mahoney (1940-2018) was an English actor.  Mahoney gained fame for playing Frasier Crane’s dad on the TV show Frasier from 1993 to 2004.   During his career Mahoney put together a pretty impressive movie career too.

His IMDb page shows 74 acting credits from 1981-2015.  This page will rank 26 John Mahoney movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television roles, cameos, shorts and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.

2/5/2018:  Just saw a tweet from WoC (Wife of Cogerson) relaying the sad news that John Mahoney had passed away at the age of 77.   We (WoC & I) were just talking about Mahoney the other day.  Frasier was one of our favorite television shows….so this loss seems very personal.    Even though Frasier provided him the most fame….he had some memorable movie roles.  My top 5 John Mahoney movie performances would be Tin Men, Eight Men Out, She’s The One, Barton Fink and Say Anything.   So to pay our respects to Mr. Mahoney we put this UMR Movie page together as a tribute to him.  Rest in Peace.  You will be missed.

  1. 1 Probably my two favourite American TV sitcoms have been Frasier and its forerunner Cheers and therefore as John Mahoney was a big part of the former he is in my Top 10 all-time favourite American TV stars although he was a supporting actor.

2 In Frasier he was simply marvellous as the latter’s endearingly cantankerous father, Martin Crane, who although he loved his two sons Frasier and Niles was down to earth enough to be embarrassed by their obvious snobbishness. He saw the intellectual Frasier in particular as self-centred, self-important and a “know it all” and this led to many a sarcastic comment in the matter. For example:

FRASIER As usual Niles has made a mess of things and as usual Frasier has to clear it up.
MARTIN As usual Martin has to hear about it!

3 Mahoney was of course a fine character actor in serious roles on the big screen. For example he was in Cher’s Suspect, Harrison Ford’s Frantic, and Mike Douglas’ The American President.

4 I particularly loved John’s big screen outing as Eastwood’s Secret Service boss in In the Line of Fire. I also liked him in the inferior Striking Distance in which I think he played the father of Mr Demi Moore. I am less certain about the Mr Moore connection because whilst I’m familiar with the movies of most of the big movie stars like Clint and some TV performers like Mahoney I nevertheless don’t pay close attention to the career of just ANY performer!

5 I last saw John in a 2009 episode of the award winning TV drama series IN Treatment in which he guest-starred as a stressed-out patient of therapist Gabriel Byrne and Mahoney’s fine performance in such contrast to his familiar Frasier role showed how wide his range was.

6 As a long-time devotee of John Mahoney I was pleased to see this respectful tribute to him appearing from you at such short notice. In these tributes your site is of course reflecting entertainment history as it happens so keep it up

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for sharing your thoughts on John Mahoney….I actually thought of you when I first heard that news….as you have mentioned Frasier numerous times in your comments. His film career is surprisingly pretty stellar…not that he was not a great actor….just how quiet that career was. Glad you enjoyed our tribute to Mahoney. RIP Mr. John Mahoney.

      1. HI BRUCE

John Mahoney actually played the villain in a movie . I will not say what it is because it might spoil the surprise ending for any other viewer who chances across it, but he was quite effective in the part.

        1. Hey Bob Roy….I know the movie in which you speak….and yes he made a good bad guy for sure…the man had talent for sure. I think I first really noticed him in Tin Men…..he played Dreyfuss’ mentor. RIP John Mahoney

  2. Hey WoC,,,,I guess it is time to get those Frasier DVD seasons off the shelf and watch some episodes….it has been awhile since we did that. RIP Martin.

  3. Sad news. Didn’t know he died until I saw the page here. RIP.

I knew John Mahoney best from Frasier but looking at the chart there are a few films I’ve seen him in – I count 12 from the 26 listed here including – In the Line of Fire, Antz, The Iron Giant, Code of Silence, Suspect and Primal Fear.

    Didn’t know he was English.

A nice tribute Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve…..sad news indeed. WoC and I were talking about him on Sunday……and then on Monday we hear he passed away on Sunday….eerie.

Yep….he was born in Manchester…..his family lost their house in a WW2 bombing…..had to move away….and then moved back to Manchester after the war. I like you would have pegged him as a Chicago man.

I have actually seen 23 of his movies…..know idea I had seen that many of his movies. My top 4 would be She’s The One, Say Anything, Eight Men Out and Tin Men…..wow…..not a single match on our favorites….that does not happen often.

Thanks for sharing some thoughts on Mr. Mahoney….RIP.
