  1. One of my father’s favorite. I’m with the Michael Douglas period but a 1-dollar DVD movie at Wal-Mart featured some of his films.

So, whenever I go ashore at US homeland as a seafarer, I see to it that I dig old movies that are worth collecting for.

With your outstanding review, how can I resist to collect more.

And to think, the legendary Kirk Douglas is still alive and kicking!

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for stopping by travelman 1971….I read that many of Kirk Douglas movies are now public domain…..so I think you will be able to find great deals on his DVDs….and looking at his list …almost all of his older movies offer something…compared to some of his movies of the last 20 years. I am pulling for Kirk to be around at least until he is 100….I hope I am doing as well when and if I get to 94…thanks for the compliment.

  2. One of the all-time greats! He had real movie star charisma and excellent acting talent. He seems like a funny and amiable guy off-screen. I recall a funny story he told once when he had to do a love scene and his young son Michael was on the set and he was too embarrassed to do the scene while the kid was watching.

“Spartacus” is propbably the role he’ll be best remembered for, but I think “Lust for Life” was his best work. I think “20,000 leagues under the sea” was the first thing I saw him in. It was far from his best work but that was my first look at Kirk.

I enjoy his collaborations with Burt Lancaster. “Seven Days in May” is an excellent film. “Gunfight at the OK Corral” wasn’t a great film but the two of them made it fun. I even liked “Tough Guys”, which they made when they were getting old.

    1. Thanks for the compliment Robwrite…..I agree he is one of the all-time greats….I imagine doing a love scene in front of your kids would have to be difficult. I liked all the movies you listed….Tough Guys was funny….and another legend in his 90s(Eli Wallach) played the bad guy in that movie…Eli and Kirk should film Grumpy Old Men 3….Kirk was in a TV movie in 2008….Eli had two movies in 2010…they could do it…thanks for stopping by.

  3. The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is *not* ranked too high. It’s wonderful. It’s one of the best Film Noir titles ever made, although Out of The Past is better. You should see this movie.

      1. Thanks for the information on The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Flora…I will have to check it out very soon….I did not realize in was in the Film Noir category…..I was thinking it was a romantic movie…..it sounds like he got off to a great start with Strange Love and then Out of the Past(another one I have to see)

It seems Sheen had almost all of his scenes with Charlie versus with Douglas in Wall Street….they might have had one scene in Wall Street together…but they were great as friends in American President.

        1. 1. Definintely not a romantic comedy.

          2. The reason for the title is that Martha’s love has become “strange”-obsessive and, ultimately, dangerous for several people in the movie.

          1. Hey Flora…sounds like a movie to check out….I was thinking a My Favorite Wife type of movie…but it sounds like a Double Indemnity type of a movie….boy was I wrong about that movie…..thanks for sharing.

  4. Nice page Cogerson, I agree that he is an amazing man, to survive the helicopter crash and a stroke, I hope he sees 100. As for his movies, my favorites would be The List of Adrian Messenger and The Final Countdown. Voted up and useful.

    1. Hey YankeesRule….Mr. Douglas has gone through lots in his life…lots of good and some heartbreak….but he keeps on moving…..I loved The List of Adrian Messenger…the cameos and the makeup that hides the stars was impressive….I have only seen that movie once….but I want to see it again. And the Final Countdown was just released on Blu-Ray…..I love the banter between Martin Sheen and Douglas…and years later Martin Sheen had great banter with Michael in The American President…thanks for stopping by.

  5. Hello Cogerson – The Man From Snowy River was a good movie, understand Kirk Douglas had to sue to get paid for that movie. The sequel is good with Brian Dennehy. I have enjoyed just about all his movies – great actor – hope he continues his long life. Thanks son for this HUB. Enjoyed reading about the movies. NO PERSONAL INFORMATION THOUGH AS I UNDERSTAND HE HAD FOUR SONS, ONE OF THEM BEING MICHAEL DOUGLAS WHICH WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE.

    1. Hey BERN1960….I did not know he had to sue Disney to get his money….that is surprising……as for his personal life…..he was married twice….had two kids with each wife….Michael being the oldest son…..his son Eric died in 2004….and he has lots of grandkids….and one super sexy daughter-in-law in Catherine Zeta-Jones….thanks for compliments.
