Tom Cruise (1962-) has been one of the biggest movie stars for almost forty years. He first started appearing in supporting roles in the early 1980s in movies like Endless Love, Taps and The Outsiders. After appearing in those supporting roles, he got the chance to star in 1983’s surprise hit …..Risky Business.  After Risky Business it has been a string of hit movie after hit movie.

His IMDB page shows over 50 acting credits since 1981. This page will rank Tom Cruise movies from Best to Worst in seven different sortable columns of information. The only movies not included in the rankings are the ones that have not yet been released in theaters and his Austin Power’s cameo.

Tom Cruise Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by his co-stars
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Tom Cruise movie received.
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

How did the first MI sell more tickets than the second? The second made almost a hundred million dollars more within a 4 year interval. How can the inflation make up for that hundred million dollars?

Hey Jordie……looking at Box Office Mojo…..these are the numbers they have…..I guess a huge jump happened in ticket costs….but….looking at their numbers it looks like they have updated their average ticket cost for 2018….which means we will be doing the same thing……luckily with us having a dynamic website it will now only take hours versus months this year.

    STEVE

1 Tom Cruise is not one of my own favourite actors but he is undoubtedly one of the greatest super stars of the modern era. In a recent interview Clint Eastwood opined that Cruise was the most important star of modern times and predicted that “100 years from now” people would be watching Tom’s movies when all of his contemporaries were long forgotten

2 For the most part the artwork in your Cruise video is exceptional and worthy of a 96.5% rating. POSTERS that particularly caught my attention were Legend, Jack Reacher, Risky Business, Collateral and those for the Mission Impossible movies. STILLS to be highly praised are I think Knight & Day, War of the Worlds, Top Gun, Interview with the Vampire, The Last Samurai and MI: Ghost Protocol. 3 of your Top 5 are shared by Bruce in his first 5 Cruise movies.

Thanks Bob, appreciate the review and rating. I seem to be getting better ratings from you on these actors than on your favorites. That’s ‘cool dude’ as the Americans are fond of saying. 🙂

Two more contemporary actors and next week we return to the classic artwork of yore (I like that word ‘yore’). If you notice todays posters have very little art and a lot of posed photoshopped faces.

But you still get some striking modern poster designs. Looking at Tom Cruise’s posters – I liked the one for The Firm, the alternate poster for Eyes Wide Shut was interesting, and I thought the photo poster of Cruise scaling the Burj Khalifa in Dubai from MI:4 was excellent.

Bruce has a fairly similar top 10 to mine but wildly different order, my number 1 is at no.9 on his critics chart and the early Cruise comedy Risky Business is far too high on his chart, it’s placed higher than A Few Good Men, Color of Money and Born on the Fourth of July! Time to retire some of your sources Bruce. [cue Bruce snarling] 😉

General Maximus Decimus Meridius is coming up next.

I am looking forward to seeing Jack Reacher 2. I love the Reacher books and I thought Cruise was pretty good in the first one. I hope your box office forecast is wrong. Let’s go Tom!

1 BRUCE Another super update and surely Cruise must be in the frame for rivalling the King and the Duke as greatest box office stars ever especially when one takes account of Tom’s wonderful global grosses ? Others in the frame might include the likes of Hanks and Eastwood ? The problem is that maybe because most of the current greats still have ongoing careers it is hard to get a current survey [present company PARTIALLY accepted of course !] that ranks classic and modern stars in the same list. For what it’s worth here are (a)selections from a list that Entertainment Weekly published about 20 years ago and you will see that the Top 10 in it are all classic stars (b) the extremely limited most recent joint list that I have seen of males only.
    ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
    1/Humphrey Bogart
    2/Katharine Hepburn
    3/James Stewart
    4/Marilyn Monroe
    5/John Wayne
    6/Cary Grant
    7/Marlon Brando
    8/Clark gable
    9/Charlie Chaplin
    10/Bette Davis
    22/James Dean
    26/Tom Hanks
    31/Tom Cruise
    37/Meryl Streep
    53/Arnold Schwarzenneger
    90/Julia Roberts
    97/Bruce Willis
    MOST RECENT LIST
    1/Tom Cruise
    2/Clint Eastwood
    3/Paul Newman
    4/James Stewart
    5/Tom Hanks
    6/Marlon Brando
    7/Jack Nicholson
    8/Robert Redford
    9/Sir Sean Connery
    10/Gary Cooper
2 It surprises me that the King is always RELATIVELY low in these list though to be in the frame at all is good so the main disappointment for me is that Joan is ranked only 47 in the EW List so I lose another round in my Crawford v Davis battle but Steve can breath well enough as Chuck is EW’s No 52 pick and Monty Clift whom we have discussed recently is No 60, but have you seen anything more up to date combining rankings of classic/mod stars? As I’ve said sterling work with your own take on Cruise.

Hey Bob….thanks for checking out my Cruise update….and thanks for the comment. Mmmm….interesting lists for sure. I remember when Entertainment Weekly was must read for me. Seems the internet killed that publication…..and I rarely go to their webpage. I see Bruce was barely in the Top 100.

As for the second list….surprised Cruise is first….seems nobody will claim to liking him…yet almost everyone of his movies does very well. That has never made sense to me. When I updated my $100 milllion page….I noticed that Cruise ranked 45th on that table….and 3rd of modern day actors….so he is indeed bringing in some coin.

As for Elvis…I agree that does not make much sense. Thanks for the movie thoughts.
