Best IMDb Trivia On Bill Nighy

1. William Francis Nighy was born in Caterham, Surrey in 1949.

2. Bill Nighy turned down the chance to play the Doctor in Doctor Who (2005).

3.  Love Actually trivia:  Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) and his manager Joe (Gregor Fisher) are the only characters in this movie whose storyline doesn’t directly connect to any of the others.  All of the other main characters are linked via family, friendship, or work.

4. To play Davy Jones in the Pirates movies, Bill Nighy wore a motion capture tracksuit, that meant the animators at Industrial Light & Magic did not have to reshoot the scene in the studio without him, or on the motion capture stage.

5.  Didn’t realize Bill Nighy was in The World’s End (2013)?  After the fight in the bathroom, when the guys try to place calls, the “your call cannot be connected” messages they hear, are voiced by Bill Nighy. The barely audible voice on the phone in the Trusty Servant, speaking to Reverend Green, is also Nighy, and when the blank of Adrian Keane approaches Sam in the club, his line is voiced by Nighy as well.

  1. On Monday the 16th my wife and me went to the movies on the last day you could see one in New York State. We went to the AMC Raceway 10 and were the only 2 people at Hope Gap starring Mr. Nighy and Annette Bening. Don’t waste your time, he acts like he doesn’t know what he’s doing there and Annette has so many ticks or she’s so effected like everything requires some facial movement.

Jack the Giant Killer featuring Mr. Nighy was the last film I saw in a cinema before my mother passed away.

I first noticed him in Love Actually trying to have the Christmas number 1, I always loved the fact the Brits would bet on what the Christmas # 1 would be and their music trades would list betting odds. Love Actually was my top film of 2003.

Bill is # 211 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list, these are the other actors on the list he has appeared with. He may be the first person I’ve seen who worked with the top 4.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks for the trivia lists.
      2. So Nighy has two memories in your head…..the last movie before the Corona Virus put the movie theater business in the toilet and the last movie you saw with your mom. Both are pretty sad events.
      3. Thanks for the mini-review of Hope Gap. I will see that one when it reaches home entertainment…which could be in a couple of days…lol.
      4. I watched Still Crazy and Love Actually at roughly the same time….that double movie put Bill Nighy on my radar….and he has been on it ever since.
      5. Number 211? That is much lower than I would have guessed. Lots of Pirates and Harry connections on the first list. So three movies with Jim Broadbent and 0 with Caine. I would have thought Caine and Nighy would have crossed paths.
      6. Only 24 Oscar winning co-stars?…..a little on the low end.
      As always…..great feedback.

      1. Jack the Giant Killer was the last movie I saw in a cinema before my mother died, she didn’t see it. She hadn’t been to a film in I think 16 years when she passed. I hadn’t gone to a movie with my mother since I was 15 or so.

        1. Actually I believe Shooting Fish and My Best Friend’s Wedding are the last my mother saw, both in Dublin. The last she saw in America was Babe in 1995 and that was about 10 years since her last movie in the states.

  2. From my perception Bill Nighy is in that bracket of actors whom one might recall often hearing about without being able to place him until seeing a list of his films. Accordingly on looking down Bruce’s charts today I recalled that I had

    (1) SEEN Bill as Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise

    (2) HEARD HIS VOICE as that of one of the heads of the two headed giant in 2013’s Jack the Giant Slayer; and also heard Bill in his voice role of Rattlesnake Jake in Johnny Depp’s Rango.

Overall Bill’s output has been prolific across many movies and other multi mediums: 55 television productions; 27 theatrical plays; 22 radio productions; and 6 video games. IMDB credits him with 15 acting awards and 29 noms; and his net worth is currently assessed as $8 million. In the pipeline for him are

COMPLETED: The Button Maker [a short drama film which he Narrates] and Heidi Queen of the Mountain [a family film]
POST PRODUCTION STAGE: Buckley’s Chance [another family film].
    PRE PRODUCTION STAGE: Dragonkeeper [Animation]

In the cast lists published so far for those 4 movies Bill is the top-billed star. I like all the miniature stills above.

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for checking out our Bill Nighy page. Nighy has become one of my favorites over the last 20 or so years. I think About Time is a movie you would enjoy. Watch it with your son. WoC and I watched it a few months….see really liked it….and seemed even better on the second viewing. Nighy is excellent as the father in that one. He made his mark in Love Actually, but it was Still Crazy that I first noticed him. He plays an old rocker in both of them. Thanks for additional information on his awards, net worth, television roles and his upcoming movies. He currently has two movies in theaters right now….though Dan gave Hope Gap a big thumbs down. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE

THanks for the feedback and the ‘must see’ advice.

Steve should be pleased that youv’e taken a shine to an Englishman!

  3. aaaah Bill Nighy, good actor, good subject.

I’ve seen 25 of the 59 films on the chart. Favorites include the Underworld series, Pirates of the Caribbean 2-3, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End, Harry Potter, Jack the Giant Slayer, Total Recall, Rango, Flushed Away, Arthur Christmas, Wrath of the Titans and Valkyrie.

I think he would have been a good Doctor Who. I liked him as Octopus-faced Davy Jones in Pirates, wasn’t there a Monkee named Davy Jones?

Looking at the chart his least successful film was his highest rated.

Pirates 2 was the most successful of the Jack Sparrow series, a massive hit.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for checking out our Bill Nighy page. I think I first noticed him was in still crazy, which probably got him his famous role in love actually. He played a crazy rocker in both movies. Not sure I even knew he was playing Davy Jones when I saw Pirates the first time, that is one of the best special-effects I’ve ever seen and deserved it’s Oscar win. I would say we have both seen a lot of his movies. I always like when he shows up, because it’s a good character actor he always bring something good to any movie no matter how bad it might be. I have seen all of your favorites. I like all of them as well. Never seen any Doctor Sho movies or shows,so I will nod my head in agreement about him making a good Dr. W. Good stuff as always.

  4. Bill Nighy is one of my favorite character/supporting actors working today. Every time he pops up in a movie, that movie gets better. Overall I have seen 41 of the 59 movies listed above. That rounds up to 70% of his movies. Favorites would include Love Actually, About Time, Pirates 2, Shaun of the Dead and Pirate Radio.
