Want to know the best Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) movies?  How about the worst Vivien Leigh movies?  Curious about Vivien Leigh box office grosses or which Vivien Leigh movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Vivien Leigh movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

One of our goals here at Ultimate Movie Rankings is to write a movie page on every member of the American Film Institute’sTop 50 Screen Legends list.  So far we have written about 21 of the 25 actors on that list but only 13 of the 25 actresses on that list. Well it is time to add the 14th actress to the list of completed pages. Ranked as the 16th best Screen Legend actress ….Vivien Leigh.

Vivien Leigh was a 2 time Best Actress Oscar® winner.   Her roles as Scarlett O’Hara in 1939’s Gone With The Wind and as Blanche DuBois in 1951’s A Streetcar Named Desire might be the greatest one two punch ever for an actressEven more amazing in my mind is the fact that she did not appear in many movies during her 30 year career….and yet she still managed to appear in these two legendary roles.

Her IMDb page shows 20 acting credits from 1935-1965. This page will rank 15 Vivien Leigh movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  Her television appearance, uncredited and 3 of her very early movies which were not released in North America were not included in the rankings.

  1. As part of their Summer Under the Stars, TCM is airing 24 hours of Vivian Leigh movies in the middle of the month. Maybe That Hamilton Woman will be included.

    Flora

  2. Hey, I was surprised at how many of her movies I have seen. She had some very good roles. The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone was a good movie – the ending of the movie was horrible in my humble opinion. A little personal information would have been good even though her life was a mess……………………………..Curious to know if she had any children as well! How many times was she married? JUST CURIOUS

    1. Hey BERN….she was married twice….had one child with her first husband (not Laurence Olivier). Sorry I did not include the Possibly Interesting Facts part.

  3. “Frankly my dear….” 🙂 A nice tribute to a movie legend. I’ve only seen… 6 of her films. I haven’t seen Waterloo Bridge or Ship of Fools. My favorite Vivien Leigh movie is Gone With the Wind, a film I watch every Xmas for some reason. I have the big blu-ray set with book, cards, photos etc the only thing missing from the set was the Confederate flag [wink]. I also liked Fire Over England, That Hamilton Woman and Caesar and Cleopatra, not so much Streetcar Named Desire [“Stellaaaaaa!”) and I also own A Yank at Oxford.

    1. Hey Steve thanks for the visit and the comment. 6 out 15 is 40% of her movies. That beats me by 2 movies but trails Flora by 2 movies. So watching GWTW is a Xmas tradition…that is cool…but wow that is a great but very very long movie. For some unknown reason I have never seen That Hamilton Woman…..even though I have been aware and interested in that movie for years. Glad I am not alone in thinking that Streetcar is not such a great movie. As always thanks for your contribution to my page……you are the man!

      1. That Hamilton Woman is a good movie, Olivier plays Admiral Nelson one of Britain’s greatest heroes, he died 200 years ago at the battle of Trafalgar. There’s a famous statue of him at Trafalgar Square in central London.
Fire Over England is a bit creaky but I like Flora Robson’s portrayal of Elizabeth I, she reprised the role in the Errol Flynn swashbuckler The Sea Hawk. ‘Flora’, catchy name. 🙂

        1. Hey Steve……thanks for the mini review on That Hamilton Woman. I will have to check that one soon. I agree Flora is a catchy name.

        2. People have often thought I was named after Dame Robson. Actually, my Grandmother on my mother’s side was named Flora.

          1. Hey Flora…..thanks for the clarification….that being said….whenever I see Flora Robson in any movie these days….you pop into my head.

  4. Hello Bruce.

Thanks for agreeing to do another actress from the AFI list.

The film at the top of my to-see list of Leigh films is A Yank at Oxford with Lionel Barrymore. Lionel is my favourite of the Barrymores. It is the highest ranking film that i have not seen.

Regarding the number of films she made:
She spent most of her acting life on stage, similar to Ethel Barrymore for example compared to her brothers, so the fact that there were not a large number of screen appearances isn’t that surprising. She was also ill for long periods of a time.

The Leigh film I saw most recently for the first time was The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone at Number 12.

The film I have seen most often is, of course, the top one: Gone With the Wind. It was also the first Vivian Leigh film I saw.

The lowest ranking film I have seen is Fire Over England, at Number 13.

I have seen, therefore, all of her top 5
    I have seen number 6:
Then there are a number of films in the middle of your rankings that I’m missing
I have then seen Number 12 and 13

Overall, I have seen 8 of these 15 films. Similar to my list of George Roy Hill films seen, I don’t think I have seen enough to have a top 5. I will do top 3 instead:

    Gone With The Wind
    That Hamilton Woman
    Caesar and Cleopatra.

I have seen those three films multiple times as well as Ship of Fools multiple times.

    Flora Breen Robison

    1. Hey Flora….let’s see Steve has yet to respond….I know he said he would boycott Shirley Temple when I did a page on her….maybe he has a Leigh boycott too. I have seen 4 of her movies….so you double my total. I have seen her two Oscar winning performances and her last two movies….Ship of Fools and Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone.

The ones I want to watch are two of the Olivier/Leigh movies…Fire Over England and That Hamilton Woman. Like you I also want to see A Yank in Oxford. I am not a fan of A a Streetcar Named Desire. Gone With the Wind is a movie I like more with each new viewing….the first time I saw I thought was way too slow and way too long.

Of your three favorites….Caesar and Cleopatra is one that very rarely gets mentioned…..I will have to check that one out too. Glad you liked my lastest AFIRE Screen Legend page……I am now 64% done with the 25 Screen Legend actresses. As always….thanks for stopping by.

  5. I love this lady. I have been a fan almost my entire life. Every movie she made is classic and I do not give a damn about your rankings. But I do thank you for giving Vivien tribute.

    1. Hey Frankie…..thanks for stopping by. I am glad you are such a big VL fan. Sorry you do not like my rankings…..but I do include other ways to rank/sort her movies. Hopefully you found some interesting stats on her movies here.
