I have Shaolin Soccer on my list of favorites from 2001, it’s year of release in HK.
The 2004 films I’ve watched most often are probably – I, Robot, The Incredibles, Chronicles of Riddick, Bourne Supremacy, Spider-Man 2, Van Helsing and Hellboy.
Top rated films from 2004 I haven’t seen include – Before Sunset, Sideways, Vera Drake and Hotel Rwanda.
Looking at the box office chart – Shrek 2 was a surprise at no.1 beating Spider-Man 2, Harry Potter 3 and The Incredibles!
Good work as always Bruce though like I mentioned earlier there are far too many barely known or obscure films on there e.g. Marebito, Crutch, Yuva, Shwaas??
Vote Up!
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for checking out our 2004 yearly page….and thanks for the comment and tally count.
2. 88 movies seen in this year…..now we are talking….getting close to triple figures again…..a tally I was expecting from you.
3. I agree 100% with you that there are many movies like Crutch and Yuva on the table….many of these movies were “pulled” directly from the internet….and especially made the list if they earned a single buck at the box office.
4. If you look at BoxOfficeMojo’s list they have about 700 movies per year…..I rarely if ever get past the Top 200….so I feel that is what is going to happen on these pages as well.
5. I have seen all of your “Hollywood” favorites….and a few of your “zz” movies.
6. I liked all the ones you really liked with the exception of Kill Bill….for some reason that QT movie never registered with me.
7. Shrek 2 was a monster monster hit or should I say ogre ogre hit…currently 38th on the all-time adjusted domestic box office charts…right behind Ghostbusters and right ahead of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
8. I have seen all of the top rated movies that you have not seen…would recommend Sideways (very funny in parts)…the other three are all good movies…but one and done movies for me.
Good feedback as always.
BRUCE
See my earlier post about 2004. A lot of 2003 films seem to be reproduced on this page? All but one of the films on chronological table are 2003
Hey Bob….that issue has been taken care of. Thanks for the headsup.
I have seen 10 of the 30 Top Grossing films domestically in the above tables and I can list overall 13 movies that really pleased me. They are-
Troy
Aviator
Collateral-I have gone off Cruise since then
Million Dollar Baby
Cellular – even Statham couldn’t spoil that one for me!
Sideways
Shall we Dance
Secret Window-Held my attention but mystified me.
Manchurian Candidate***
Twisted
Man on Fire***Can’t get enough of Denzel!
The Grudge
Downfall
The overall Cogerson review average for these 13 is a respectable 68.2%. Not bad for your boy Ma and those who think he doesn’t watch stuff of reasonable quality – and you know who you are- should maybe think again!
NOTE: A rare Cogerson mistake? I’ll Sleep when I’m Dead is listed by Bruce in both the 2003 and 2004 reviews and I included it among my personal faves in my 2003 comments and indeed I understand that 2003 is the correct year and it seems to have made so little money that a re-release seems unlikely.
Anyway I’m pleased that Bruce gave it a 61% -slightly better than “good”-rating as I have fond memories of it having watched it on DVD during to my one visit to Australia in January 2007 [when I was also able to watch Roger Federer play Andy Roddick in the flesh at the Oz Open!]
Hey Bob….thanks for checking out this yearly review. I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead has been fixed…it is now only listed on the 2003 yearly review. Of your 13 favorites…seen them all except for Shall We Dance. Two Denzel movies in the Top 13….I like both movies. Sideways was a good movie..but not as great as the critics made it out to be. Downfall is a movie that gets used on You Tube all the time…usually as spoof on something going on currently….but that is an excellent movie with an incredible performance by Bruno Ganz. Cool that you got to see Roger in a Grand Slam finale. I am impressed. Good stuff as always.
HEY BRUCE Thanks for feedback. Jimmy Connors was coaching Roddick at that time and when Andy was thrashed by Roger Jimmy hotfooted it back to the dressing room to be there to sympthize with Andy, and Jimmy hastily brushed by my brother and me. The latter was a great fan of Jimmy in his heyday so the encounter was a thrill for my brother even though of course Connors was oblivious to to us.
It would be a bit like Sir Maurice brushing against you in a rush: you would be quickly on the phone to say to W o C “He touched me! He touched me!”; or you and Mr Gimme More accidentally colliding when Gimme’s ex was in a hurry : “W o C – He swore at me! He swore at me!”
By the way I have always felt sorry for but admired Roddick. He was World No1 and with a single grandslam to his credit when Roger came on the scene and Roger quickly took the No 1 spot away from him and Andy never won another grandslam. In fact Roger could be said to have ruined his career to an extent, Andy ever winning just one of their 14 encounters.
Still they remained friends with a genuine fondness for each other and Andy displayed a sense of humor on that one occasion that he did beat Federer. When they handed him the trophy he turned round to Roger and said “Is it OK if I keep this one?”
You have to admire that when other ‘rivals’ are backbiting each other and indeed McEnroe admits today that back when they were in competition he and Connors wouldn’t speak to each other even when they were on the same team during the Davis Cup. Connors once threatened Lendl with physical violence on court and shouted “Commie!” at Ivan as he came from an Iron Curtain country
By the way there is a gambling casino where the “high rollers” go right beside the Australian Open tournament stadium and the evening we were there the word spread that Roddick who liked to play the tables had gone there after the Federer match with Andy’s then girllfriend Maria Sharapova.
2004 was the last year I saw a film in Manhattan, The In-Laws. Actually it had been 2 years before that when I saw the previous 1. I had seen S1mone there and then some Matthew Perry pic and that was it. These are the 95 2004’s I saw in the cinema.

Hey Dan….thanks for posting these epic lists of movies.
So The In-Laws was the last one…..too bad it was not the original…..at least that way it would have been going out with a good movie….at least in my opinion.
Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 is actually ranked as the 3rd lowest rated movie on IMDb….at least at this time……so good memory there….we won’t mention that you do not remember your favorite movie of the year….lol.
Ah, now I have seen the lowest number of yearly review films for which I comment on the page.
The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Million Dollar Baby.
The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is The Incredibles.
Favourite 2004 Movies:
The Aviator
Finding Neverland
The Notebook
Phantom of the Opera
Ray
Other 2004 Movies I Have Seen:
Ray
13 Going on 30
Shall We Dance
Hey Flora….I agree…..8 is your lowest total so far. Well in time…that number will only go up. I have seen 7 of the 8 you have seem. Finding Neverland would be the one I like the most….The Notebook and 13 Going On 30 getting a lot of playtime in this house…though it is not normally with me in the room. Good stuff…..and it is really appreciated since I know this year is not nearly one of your favorites.
