Tom Cruise (1962-) has been one of the biggest movie stars for almost forty years. He first started appearing in supporting roles in the early 1980s in movies like Endless Love, Taps and The Outsiders. After appearing in those supporting roles, he got the chance to star in 1983’s surprise hit …..Risky Business.  After Risky Business it has been a string of hit movie after hit movie.

His IMDB page shows over 50 acting credits since 1981. This page will rank Tom Cruise movies from Best to Worst in seven different sortable columns of information. The only movies not included in the rankings are the ones that have not yet been released in theaters and his Austin Power’s cameo.

Tom Cruise Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by his co-stars
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Tom Cruise movie received.
  • Sort Tom Cruise movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

HI BRUCE I am finding your updates great fun and as I examined the latest update of Tom Cruise’s page it struck me how difficult it is to compare in any great detail the box office pull of modern stars with that of their counterparts in the Classic Era.

So much has changed in the production, marketing, exhibition and attendance of films with for example greater audiences in the classic era against more buoyant foreign markets today, lucrative contemporary DVD/video outlets, instant saturation releases and multi-screen complexes.

In my own mind though I have for some time in general terms considered among males modern stars such as Hanks, Cruise and Harrison Ford as the counterparts of the likes of Wayne, Stewart and Gable at the top of the box office trees in their respective eras.

Hanks I regard as the best actor among the “mega” COMMERCIAL stars of today and in fact consider Tom Hanks to be the modern equivalent of Tracy and Brando in terms of being among that select group of performers whom David Shipman called the ACTOR/STARS – ie thespians considered great actors who could also open a film at the box office when at their peak.

For example Arnie has been a great box office star but is not regarded as an exceptional actor whereas Day-Lewis is applauded as a great actor but is not though to ring box office tills in the way Willis has done. The great DeNiro is reported to have run out of a room in a tantrum when a critic told him he wasn’t “Box office”.

Indeed you have said that Brando “owned the fifties” and a few years back it seemed to me that Hanks almost owned Hoillywood in the days when he was churning out monster hits and becoming part of the small band of double Oscar winners down the years. As you yourself said of Marlon, Hanks “had it all” at his very peak and is still proactive.

However Clint Eastwood seems in no doubt at all about who the greatest STAR of all time is – Tom Cruise. In a recent interview Clint said that “100 years from now his [Tom’s] films will still be watched when all the rest of us have been long forgotten about”

Actually I am not a great Cruise fan but I did enjoy him in A Few Good men, Days of Thunder and The Firm and it has pleased me to use his latest Cogerson update to refresh my memory about Tom’s box office credentials.

I should add though that I hasve never watched Top Gun and have never wanted to [though I loved the theme song Take My breath Away by Berlin].

I’m looking forward to seeing the 6th Mission Impossible movie some time next week, the reviews have been stellar. 98% at Rotten Tomatoes, wow!

My favorite M:I so far? I’d say the one where Cruise is scaling the Burj Khalifa in Dubai had the best balance of action, suspense and humor, that would be the 4th one – Ghost Protocol. I also enjoyed the 5th one quite a bit – Rogue Nation. Least favorite is the 2nd one, directed by John Woo, too much slo-mo, fancy camerawork and doves flying about.

Looking at the main chart there are 4 Tom Cruise films I haven’t seen – M:I 6, Endless Love, Rock of Ages and Taps. So I’ve seen 38 out of 42.

Looking at the box office charts – Top Gun is still tops in the US in adjusted dollars, worldwide the first two Mission Impossibles have overtaken Top Gun. War of the Worlds and Rain Man were also huge.

    Nice update Bruce. Vote Up!

I guess today I am no longer a Tom Cruise completist…..as Mission Impossible-Fallout is officially in theaters…so my tally is 41. Not seeing it this weekend…..but will probably see it next weekend….or at least that is the plan currently.

I think the Mission Impossible movies have gotten better as they have turned into almost an ensemble movie….especially the last two chapters…which gave the other members of the team more to do….hoping that is the case with Fallout.

I like you did not like the 2nd one at all……the 3rd one even with Philip Seymour Hoffman is not that good either. Of the 4 you have missed….I actually saw two of them in cinemas (Endless Love, Taps). He is barely in Endless Love….but he is actually pretty good in Taps…..which I would recommend watching….veteran George C. Scott….and babies Sean Penn, Cruise and Timothy Hutton….not to mention a supporting role by Giancarlo “Breaking Bad” Esposito.

The man….even though lots of people claim not to like has been starring in successful movie after successful movie for almost 40 years…I do not think I am a huge Cruise fan….yet I have seen 41 of his movies….and will see the 42nd. Just does not make sense……nobody likes yet we all go and see his movies…lol. Thanks for checking out our updated mobile friendly update.
