May 13th – RIP Roger Corman

Want to know the best Roger Corman movies?  How about the worst Roger Corman movies?  Curious about Roger Corman box office grosses or which Roger Corman movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Roger Corman movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well, you have come to the right place…. because we have all of that information and much more.

Roger Corman (1926-2024) was a legend in the world of cinema, particularly renowned for his prolific output as a filmmaker and producer, often working within the realms of low-budget independent filmmaking. Born on April 5, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, Corman has had an indelible impact on the film industry, particularly in the realms of horror, science fiction, and exploitation cinema.

Corman began his career in the 1950s, initially working as a story analyst for 20th Century Fox. He soon transitioned into directing with his debut feature, “Five Guns West” (1955), a low-budget Western. However, it was his work in the horror and science fiction genres that would cement his reputation. Films like “Attack of the Crab Monsters” (1957), “Not of This Earth” (1957), and “The Little Shop of Horrors” (1960) showcased his ability to create entertaining films on modest budgets.

One of Corman’s most significant contributions to cinema was his mentorship of numerous young filmmakers who would later become prominent figures in the industry. Directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, and Jonathan Demme, among others, got their start working with Corman. His willingness to give emerging talent opportunities to learn and create within the constraints of low budgets and tight schedules is often cited as one of his most enduring legacies. In addition to his work as a director, Corman is perhaps equally well-known as a producer. He founded his production company, New World Pictures, in 1970, which became a major player in the realm of independent filmmaking throughout the 1970s and 1980s. New World Pictures produced a wide range of films, including exploitation fare, genre films, and cult classics.

Corman’s influence extends beyond his own films and productions. His innovative approaches to filmmaking, such as shooting quickly and efficiently on small budgets, have inspired generations of independent filmmakers. He demonstrated that with creativity, resourcefulness, and a willingness to take risks, it was possible to produce successful films outside of the Hollywood studio system.

Throughout his career, Corman has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to cinema, including an honorary Academy Award in 2009 for his lifetime achievement. Even in his later years, Corman remained active in the industry, continuing to produce films and occasionally making cameo appearances in various projects. His impact on cinema, both as a filmmaker and a mentor, is truly remarkable and continues to be felt today.
