Keenan Wynn Movies

Want to know the best Keenan Wynn movies?  How about the worst Keenan Wynn movies?  Curious about Keenan Wynn box office grosses or which Keenan Wynn movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Keenan Wynn movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well, you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Keenan Wynn (1916-1986) was an American actor.  Though Wynn rarely carried the lead role, he had prominent billing in most of his film and television roles. His acting career spanned 5 decades. His IMDb page shows 282 acting credits from 1942 to 1986.  This page will rank Keenan Wynn movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.

Drivel Part of the Page:  When Dean Stockwell recently passed away, I was looking at the famous 1949 “The Silver Jubilee Stars of MGM” photo (see below).  When I saw Keenan Wynn in the photo (top row all the way on the right), I realized I should do an UMR page on his career.  Well, a few weeks later and his page is now complete.

Keenan Wynn Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

Keenan Wynn Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies any way you want.

  • Sort Keenan Wynn movies by his co-stars
  • Sort Keenan Wynn movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Keenan Wynn movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Keenan Wynn movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Keenan Wynn movie received.
  • Sort Keenan Wynn movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Possibly Interesting Facts About Keenan Wynn

1. Francis Xavier Aloysius James Jeremiah Keenan Wynn was born in New York City in 1916. He is the son of vaudeville comedian Ed Wynn and the grandson of actor, Frank Keenan.  Frank Keenan was one of the first Broadway stars to star in Hollywood.

2. Keenan Wynn was married to former stage actress Eve Lynn Abbott (1914–2004) until their divorce in 1947, whereupon Abbott married actor Van Johnson, one of the couple’s closest friends. Abbott contended her marriage to Wynn was a happy one, but that her divorce and remarriage was engineered by MGM studio boss Louis B. Mayer, who refused to renew Wynn’s contract unless Abbott divorced him and married Johnson, who was the subject of rumors that he was homosexual.

3.  Keenan Wynn appeared with Van Johnson in seven films: Between Two Women (1945), Week-End at the Waldorf (1945), Ziegfeld Follies (1945), No Leave, No Love (1946), Easy to Wed (1946), It’s a Big Country: An American Anthology (1951) and Men of the Fighting Lady (1954).

6. Keenan Wynn was originally to play Perry White in Superman (1978), but had to drop out upon arriving in London for filming due to heart problems. The role went to Jackie Cooper.

7.  Keenan Wynn suffered from hearing loss in his later years. Part of the reason for his eventual loss of hearing was due to the fact that he raced just about anything on land or water and most of the vehicles were loud and unmuffled.

8. One of Keenan Wynn’s sons, actor and writer Ned Wynn, wrote the autobiographical memoir We Will Always Live In Beverly Hills. His other son, Tracy Keenan Wynn, is a screenwriter whose credits include The Longest Yard and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (both 1974).

9.  Keenan Wynn appeared in three Oscar Best Picture nominees: Since You Went Away (1944), Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) and Nashville (1975).

    1. Hey Dan.
      1. As always thanks for the feedback.
      2. Sorry that I have not been very present here at UMR….I am literally having a hard time even finding the time to do the Daily UMR Post….much less writing new pages and commenting back. I am overwhelmed with my teaching job this semester.
      3. Wow….you watched Clifford?…..that has to be on one of the streaming services as well as in theaters. I will have to look up Jessica Keenan Wynn….as currently…I have no idea what she looks like…and how much Keenan is in her.
      4. Not surprised he is so Oracle connected….although this page is massive…there are still numerous movies that I could not locate box office grosses on.
      5. Aldo Ray looks like he is the most frequent Oracle Co-Star. Seeing Angela Lansbury on the list, reminds that she is the last MGM star from the attached photo that is still alive (granted I could be wrong), but with the recent passing of Dean Stockwell…she appears to be the last one standing.
      6. 54 Oscar winners is pretty impressive….not Caine impressive…but pretty impressive.
      Good stuff as always.

  2. I have seen 50 Keenan Wynn movies. Wynn was the son of Ed Wynn.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Since You Went Away.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Son of Flubber.

The LOWEST ranked movie I have seen is Pretty Maids All in a Row.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for the comment on this massive Keenan Wynn page. I had no idea I had this many of his movies sitting in the database. Tally count….50 for you and 28 for me. I have seen 7 of your favorites and three of your others. I would say my favorite Wynn movies would be Point Blank, The Americanization of Emily, Touch of Evil (a very small role for him) and Dr. Strangelove….though that movie which is a classic…does not seem as funny as the first time I saw it. Good stuff as always.
