When Frank McRae passed away, my mind immediately flashed back to my youth—a time when it felt like he showed up in almost every movie I watched. He was the teacher who went down in the opening minutes of Red Dawn. He was the guy who broke Nick Nolte’s arm in Cannery Row, a film I must’ve watched a thousand times on HBO. He was the other security guard in National Lampoon’s Vacation. He was the shouting police chief in 48 Hrs., laying into Eddie Murphy and Nolte, a role he later spoofed brilliantly in The Last Action Hero.
When he died, I thought, “I’ve gotta make a page for him.” But life and work got in the way, and it slipped through the cracks. Still, the thought kept coming back: “I gotta do a McRae page. Gotta do a McRae page.”
Then, just the other day, I was watching The Bank Shot, a lesser-known George C. Scott bank heist movie—not a great film—and there he was again. That was the moment. I said, “I’m doing this.”
And that’s when it hit me—four years had already gone by. Four years!
While researching, I found out a lot of cool stuff. I’ve seen over 21 of his movies. He even played in the NFL for the Chicago Bears. And for the last 20 years of his life, he pretty much stopped acting. I haven’t figured out why yet, but it really made me stop and reflect.
So here it is—our long-overdue Frank McRae page. Plenty of great films, and a presence that deserves to be remembered. I just wish I had put this together back when he first passed.
