  1. Alan Alda is one of the few people I have seen in a show on Broadway and a show in London. On Broadway I saw him in Neil Simon’s Jake’s Women and in the U.K. I saw him as the narrator in a revival of Our Town. Also in Our Town was Robert Sean Leonard who I also saw on the stage in New York in Arcadia (w/ Victor Garber, Blair Brown and Billy Cruddop). Robert Sean was in Dead Poet’s Society and was a regular on the medical series House, but I digress. Mr. Alda has never been on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. These are the actors on the current list that he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. As epic as the first list is…it is surprising that Alda is not on the Top 1000.
      2. At 82…not thinking he is going to get on that list…..he was actually born 13 days after my dad….way back in 1936.
      3. That is cool that you have seen him on both sides of the big pond (Atlantic Ocean).
      4. Your entertainment experiences always amaze me.
      5. Bess Flower Award goes to…..drumroll…..Woody Allen with 3 movies.
      6. 25 Oscar winners…is low…but a good percentage for his 32 movies…I imagine he worked with some Oscar winners on his numerous television roles.
      Good feedback.

  2. I have seen 4 Alan Alda movies.

The Aviator is a favourite of mine.

The other films I have seen are:
    California Suite
Everyone Says I Love You – seen for being a musical; usually avoid W.A.
The Moonshine War – another Richard Widmark film that is not a favourite

RE: M*A*S*H: I have watched this series a lot over the years, but I have never seen the final episode in its entirety. I tried watching it once and stopped watching it after about half an hour.

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. Thanks for the thoughts on Alan Alda.
      2. 4 Alda movies seen is still 12.50% of his movies.
      3. So Widmark did not get The Moonshine War to the top of the Flora favorites list….interesting.
      4. The Aviator is Alda’s Oscar nominated role.
      5. Glad I am not alone in the MASH final episode criticism.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. I saw 10 including top 6. not a fan. no 10s, no favorites. hidden gem: what women want, a 9, his top box office effort. i love to laugh. loved the Wayne Rogers/ mclean Stevenson MASH, not so much the alan alda MASH without Trapper and Henry.

    1. Hey bob cox. Thanks for the visit, tally and comment. Even though you are not a huge Alda fan….you have seen almost a 1/3 of his movies. I agree with you on two points. The first seasons of MASH were the funniest…..always loved Frank Burns more than Charles Winchester in the “bad guy” role. Also, I do not have any favorite Alda movies…some are good, but certainly not ones I re-watch. Good stuff as always.

    1. Hey Bob….well either Alan Alda was 7 when he started playing Hawkeye in MASH or I made a mistake…..since I rarely make mistakes I am going to assume Alda was indeed 7 when MASH started….lol. Mr.Alda was born in 1936….I will fix that when I get home. Thanks for the heads up.

        1. HI BRUCE

You never can rule out someone making a movie aged 7. After all as we have discussed previously Jeff Bridges debuted aged 2 as a baby being carried aboard a train in 1951’s The Company She Keeps; Mozart wrote his first symphony when he was 8 years old; and reading through Joel’s book [which I am hugely enjoying – thanks very much again] I get the impression that The Master may have written some of his great critiques when HE was an infant!

“Alan Alda’s screen presence has grown with age and experience.” – The Master

Anyway Alan Alda has just 4 $100 million crashers in the table above and in only one of them could he be said to be the star [The 4 Seasons]. Alan’s other 28 movies in the table gross about $860 million collectively – average of just $30 million approx per flick.

Steve’s no doubt right that Alan is more famous for TV’s MASH than for any of his big screen movies. However I personally most remember Alan for 1971’s The Mephisto Waltz, a big favourite of W o Bob as well, though I see that it just misses the 60% rating yardstick that represents a “good” movie on this site.

IMDB credits Alan overall with 40 acting awards and 61 nominations so Alan deserves his Cogerson page as Possibly Interesting Facts information above also makes abundantly clear- I’m glad to see that “old friend” back by the way as I have missed it.and I think Flora also values it as I do. “Voted UP!” for an excellent statistical summary of Alda’s career. Alan’s net worth is said to be $40 million.

          1. Hey Bob. True….7 is not too young to make a lasting impact. But being 7 and playing a Korean War doctor might be a little bit of a stretch…..lol. Doogie Howser in MASH….now that would have been a short lived movie.

I agree, his stand alone movie career has not been as awesome as his television career. When he reach the Quigley list…he was at the height of his career. A television and movie star…..not many can make that glad at the same time…but he could from the late 1970s to early 1980s.

Interesting that WoB likes The Mephisto Waltz…..I have not seen it….but I read about it when I was putting this page together…sounds like it was made because of the success of Rosemary’s Baby…I will have to check that one out.

Glad you liked our “old friend”…..with time limitations….gotta admit….that friend has become harder and harder to find time for…..I think the “trailer pages” have made it take a back seat.

Good stat collections…and good feedback as always.

  4. I’ve seen just six of the 32 films on the chart – The Aviator, Bridge of Spies, Tower Heist, The Mephisto Waltz, California Suite and Murder at 1600.

The Aviator being my favorite from that list.

Alda has always been more famous for his role as Hawkeye in the tv series MASH than any of his film roles. Looking at your trivia he won 5 emmys for that show and was the only person to appear in every episode. Donald Sutherland played Hawkeye in the original movie.

What Women Want was his biggest movie eh, didn’t see it.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for the feedback on Alan Alda. I have actually seen 20 of these movies. I loved him as Hawkeye…still miffed the final MASH episode left him in such a horrible mental state. I understand their logic…and it is one of the highest rated tv events of all-time…but his character dealt with horrible stuff all the time….seems weird to end the series that way….what a minute, am I talking tv here…..stop….Bad Cogerson…lol.

Ah movies again. I have seen most of his movies….but not thinking there is a single one I really love and want to watch repeatedly. His two Caine movies are fun….but hardly his best work. What Women Want is a fun movie….entertaining enough to check out at least once. I have seen 5 of your 6….only missing The Mephisto Waltz. To Kill A Clown was a big VHS renter back in my video store days….had to be because of Alda’s tv star wattage.

      Good stuff as always.
