  1. I have seen 10 Andrew V. McLaglen movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Shenandoah.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is The Undefeated.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Sea Wolves.

    Favourite Andrew V. McLaglen Movies:

    Shenandoah
    The Devil’s Brigade
    The Way West
    The Seas Wolves

    Other Andrew V. McLaglen Movies:

    McLintock!
    Chisum
    Bandolero!
    The Rare Breed
    Fools’ Parade

  2. In the penultimate para of my previous post “Lass at 50” should have read “Ladd at 50”. In the final paragraph “cloudn’t” should be couldn’t of course Apologies for both errors.

  3. I have actually seen no other of Andrew’s movies but a John Wayne or James Stewart one, the most enjoyable of these for me having been:

    WAYNE: McLintock and Chisum

    STEWART: Bandolero/Shenandoah/The Rare Breed.

For me as a Stewart fan Shenandoah was the final completely satisfactory “James Stewart” movie as such. Cogerson adjusted domestic-gross of a fine $172 million and a highly-respectable review rating of 75%. Jimmy’s last great performance.

Airport 77 did commercially well too with an adjusted $168 million domestically but was “rip-off” stuff, has a Cogerson review rating of a poor 42% and is an ensemble movie with 1st billed Jack Lemmon in the lead role. However with a domestic gross of the size that Bruce has quoted along with foreign earnings against a relatively modest budget of $40 million when adjusted for inflation it must have been fairly profitable

Bandolero did scrape the Cogerson magical adjusted domestic $100 million hurdle but Bruce gives it just a 43% review rating so although I liked it I can’t insist it was a Stewart classic. Also with an inflation adjusted budget of $38 million and roughly half of its earnings going to the cinemas it would have needed good foreign earnings to make it suitably profitable.

The Rare Breed was an out and out flop with just an adjusted $42 million domestically and a Cogerson review rating of a mediocre 53%. The least interesting of Jimmy’s westerns for my money although I enjoyed it.

Andrew’s net worth has been assessed as between 13 and 19 million dollars at the time of his death in 2014 – worth between 16 and 24 million today. He has been heralded in some historical surveys as one of Hollywood’s celebrities who have lived to a right old age [94] as opposed to for example Lass at 50, Gable at 59 and John Wayne and Andrew’s own father Victor both at 72. Victor too of course made many films with The Duke.

Humphrey Bogart didn’t think much of Victor McLaglan and when criticising how much of a lottery Bogie thought the Oscars were Humph said “For example they gave one to Victor McLaglen for The Informer – a man who cloudn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag!”
