Cogerson Review of Avengers: Infinity War

Why I watched this one? Good trailers, good reviews, good word of mouth and 10 years of watching MCU movies….why would I not go see this one.

What is this one about? The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

My thoughts on this one? A very entertaining and at times, edge of your seat movie. Movie does a wonderful job of keeping multiple story lines going throughout the movie. Movie is pretty dark in tone and offers surprises throughout the movie….none will be discussed here.

Standouts in the movie would include Josh Brolin as the Thanos (the bad guy), Chris Pratt as Starlord (he offers up most of the humor), Robert Downey, Jr as Iron Man, Tom Holland as Spidey (love the way Holland plays his role) and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. The ending is a huge shock…..did not see it coming at all….and will have you counting the days until Avengers 4 comes out.

On the negative side….some of the heroes are given very little to do. Chris Evans’ Captain America is barely in the movie. Original Avenger, Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner did not make the movie. There is a new love story that I did not buy at all. Final thought: A movie that needs to be seen in theaters.

  1. Although I feel very similar about infinity war as I do about endgame, your review is better
    – It tells story lines without messing them up
    – Film is somewhat dark

Edge of your seat moment? Again, if the characters don’t feel it, I don’t feel it. (This isn’t tom cruise dropping in the original MI or Gandalf screaming to the balrog)

    1. Hey Jordie. Thanks for the thoughts on the last two Avengers movies. It seems like years since those movies were in theaters…..I miss event movies happening….I wonder if they will ever return after this Pandemic is over. Maybe you will feel it with Stage 4 of the MCU universe. Maybe I am not thinking clearly, but I suspect Stage 4 might not be as successful. I like the Gandalf screaming part of your comment…I remember that so well in theaters.

      1. Not to brag about avengers, but since I’ve been commenting it’s made me think more about films.
This list https://www.imdb.com/list/ls080307369/ includes both features that I used to like and still like (as I said, my taste has changed)
The list’s title says why I like them (I just realized that yesterday)
What fun thing came to mind yesterday when lying in bed is that endgame is very much sneak mission. And yet it bored me. That’s how important emotion is

  2. Not originally listed among the cast on IMDB but pretty visible to me today when I saw it, Stan Lee and William Hurt (and they’re in the credits). Not as good as Black Panther but not bad. Couple of characters missing that I expected to see in it but I won’t give away any spoilers

    1. Hey Dan….thanks for the mini-review. Somehow we have managed not to see Black Panther….but it is coming out on DVD in two weeks……pretty amazing that Black Panther was still in the Top 5 last week. As for Infinity Wars…..I had to take off three names on the above table….I kept waiting for them to show up……well…as you know….still waiting….lol. I forgot to include Hurt in my database for this movie….as soon as he showed up…..I was like…”Damn…I forgot all about him”.

  3. Epic movie. You are so right; counting down the days until Avengers 4. When the ending was happening, I hated it! But after further processing; it is a genius move.

“I am Danny.” This is a reference to my favorite line in the movie.

    1. Hey Danny….I thought the “I am XXXXX XXXXXX” line was one of the funnest in the movie too. I see your point about the ending…..I think I was just confused until my brain finally registered what was happening. Avengers 4 will be a “must see” movie too. Thanks for the mini-review.

    1. Hey Steve….as I write this comment…..it is being claimed that Infinity War broke the record…..$250 MILLION OPENING WEEKEND!….does this mean a $300 million opening weekend is coming next? It staggers the mind. Go see it….before the massive spoilers reach you…..unless they already have.

      1. Bruce I’ve managed to avoid spoilers so far. I don’t open Avengers articles at Hollywood Reporter or look at the Avengers thread on my forum just in case. I know something monumental happens at the climax and it all ends in a cliffhanger but thats all. Probably go tomorrow.

  4. Personally, I detest so-called ‘superhero’ movies where there are never any real stakes, never anything too terribly scary or basically, anything but bubblegum feel good flicks. I want to be on the edge of my seat with my disbelief suspended and wondering if the good guys will win.

This film did that, unlike the travesty that was Homecoming, the CGI-heavy and character-lite garbage of Doctor Strange and every single DC movie, period. I wanted to turn around and see it again but couldn’t get a ticket in any theater yesterday to do so. I sure can’t say that about the other films I listed

    1. Hey Travis. An interesting mini-review of Infinity Wars. I agree with most of your comments….though I did really enjoy Spider-Man Homecoming. Marvel hits another home run.
