Betty Garrett (1919-2011) is an American actress, dancer and singer.  Garrett originally performed on Broadway, and was then signed to a film contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. After appearing in many classic musicals, her career was derailed by the House Un-American Activities Committee.  After her husband, Larry Parks, admitted to past affiliations with the Communist Party, movie roles for her disappeared.  Her IMDb page shows 32 acting credits from 1948 to 2009.  This page will rank Betty Garrett movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.

  1. i saw 2 of top 3. no 10s, no 9s, no favorites. saddened by tale of McCarthyism. using fear to destroy lives.

  2. I have seen 4 Betty Garrett movies, ON THE TOWN is the HIGHEST movie ranked I have seen while WORDS AND MUSIC is the LOWEST ranked movie I have seen. The other two Betty Garrett movies I have seen are NEPTUNE’S DAUGHTER and TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME. I have only seen the original version of MY SISTER EILEEN with Rosalind Russell. I have not seen the 1955 musical remake of MY SISTER EILEEN with Betty Garett and Jack Lemmon thus it’s the highest ranked movie that I haven’ t seen.

    1. Hey Greg. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Betty Garrett. Tally count: 5 for Flora, 4 for you and 3 for me. Those might be low totals….but they are a decent percentage of her movies. I like you have seen her two Frank/Gene musicals….On The Town and Take Me Out To The Ballgame. I have seen her version of My Sister Eileen…..I do admit….I did not even know that Rosalind Russell had made the original. Good comment.

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out this Betty Garrett page. Tally count: 5 for you, 4 for Greg and 3 for me. The three I have seen are your favorites…so I think I saw the right ones….lol. Good stuff as always.

  4. Work Horse you have a way of bringing back to me nostalgic memories of long ago. Growing up in the early 1950s I was obsessed with B movies and had no interest in musicals. However they held a certain mystique for me because adults liked them so I saw them as “prestige” pictures.

Accordingly when 1955’s My Sister Eileen appeared at the local cinema I made a special journey there to gaze at the marquee and went back several times. I had heard of Jack Lemmon and was very familiar with Janet Leigh from several movies but the name Betty Garrett was new to me and I remember vividly standing in front of that cinema and wondering who she was and then mentioning her to my pals.

We tend to think a lot about the BIG things in life like the assassination of jFK because they tend to stay with us longer; and often we don’t dwell too much on the relatively LITTLE things so that when we are suddenly reminded of them the memory hits us more forcefully. That’s what happened to me when I saw Betty’s new page flagged up: I was transported mentally back to those nights in 1955 when I stood gazing up at that marquee.

I never actually saw My Sister Eileen and have seen no others among the Garrett movies in WH’s lists but Wikipedia mentions 10 of Betty’s TV appearances made from 1960-1998 and I recall seeing her in a 1987 episode of Angela Lansbury’s Murder She Wrote and a 1992 episode of The Golden Girls [not to be confused with Demi Moore and Myrna Loy on this site!]

Wiki also gives a detailed list of 38 stage performances by Betty from 1938 until 2007 and I see that these include classics like in 1987 Meet Me in St Louis and in 1998 Arsenic and Old Lace of which Al Leach made a famous movie version. Also Betty replaced Judy Holliday for two weeks in Bells are Ringing

Until I read Bruce’s lead-in above I didn’t know Betty had been married to Larry Parks and whilst I knew that Larry had been blacklisted I was unaware that Betty had shared his misfortune. For that reason; for her great stage reputation; and for being reminded of my 1955 ‘encounter’ with her I am glad that Betty has been given a Cogerson page – so “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob. An enjoyable comment on Betty Garrett and how the page took you the 1950s. Amazing that you remember that information. Thanks for the information on new television roles and her stage performances. Glad I could make you aware of her lifelong marriage to Larry Parks. Thanks for the kind words and the vote up.

      1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for the feedback on my Betty Garrett post.

In the penultimate para of my post on Betty I referred to her stage peformance in Meet Me in St Louis as being in 1987 whereas it was in 1989. Apologies.

If you get a moment I’d be most grateful if you would correct the error for me. It’s a small one I know; but you are aware of how I like the Cogerson site to have as perfect as possible a record over matters such as release/production dates and billing!

        Many thanks.
