Biggest Box Office Hits of 1936

1936 gave us the classic Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times

This movie page looks at 1936 Top Box Office Movies.  Finding box office information for movies made in the 1930s and 1940s is extremely difficult.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1936 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 33,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1936 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1936.  Obviously many movies made in 1935 earned box office dollars in 1936.  On the other side many movies made in 1936 made money in 1937 and later.  This page will looks at 152 1936 Top Box Office Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

The following massive table only includes the movies made in 1936 that are in our database.  Since we are constantly adding new movies to our database….this page will quickly become obsolete.  We will try and update this page on a regular basis.

Our UMR Top 50 of 1936

1936 Top Box Office Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1936 Top Box Office Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1936 Top Box Office Movies by domestic actual box office grosses
  • Sort 1936 Top Box Office Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost.
  • Sort 1936 Top Box Office Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each 1936 Top Box Office Movies received.
  • Sort 1936 Top Box Office Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

The Great Ziegfeld won the Oscar Best Picture of 1936….but our UMR movie of 1936 is Mr. Deeds Goes To Town

  1. Hi Cogerson, glad you got on to doing another annual page. With 152 films, this one is very comprehensive. Lot’s of great films in 1936. Mr Deeds Goes to Town, Dodsworth, Camille and After the Thin Man are among the ones I remember best. But by far, my favourite is Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, a work of sheer genius in my view that entertained me as much as a child as an adult. I never noticed that it did not even receive one academy award nomination….yet another major failure of the academy!

    1. HI BRUCE

1 As you know I rely a lot on your Annual Review stats so I share Phil’s general sentiments.

2 There’s a gap between 1949 and 1959 that’s broken by only and 1952 Annual Review. I take it that over time that gap will be bridged?

3 You may remember that in Field of Dreams James Earl Jones as an embittered and reclusive radical author whom Costner has been tracking down says to Kevin in horror when they finally meet “Oh my God you’re from the sixties! ” In similar circumstances and in relation to films I could unquestionably be identified as being ” from the fifties” as those were my formative and probably most nostalgic years as a moviegoer. Accordingly your 1950s annual reviews spark my keenest interest although I still treasure ALL of your yearly surveys.

      1. Hey Bob….I can see doing 1950 and 1951 in the near future….because that would give us pages from 1936 to 1952……that seems like a pretty impressive amount of consecutive years. I will keep the fact that you are from the 1950s when I am thinking about the next page we want to do. Good stuff.

        1. Hi Bruce, and there’ s also a little gap between 1959 and 1976 you may want to consider filling one day….considering that I was born in the 60s 🙂

    2. Hey Phil….glad you like this page. I think these 152 movies is easily the biggest collection of movies with box office on the entire internet. I agree with you 100% about Modern Times….seeing it got no nominations…makes no sense at all. I like all the movies you liked except for Dodsworth….I was not impressed with that one at all. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this 1936 movie page.

  2. HI LUPINO

1 I gulped for a moment because I thought you were resurrecting our Lonesome Pine argument for another round or two and I was reminded of the Jaws 2 tagline “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.”!

2 Turning to your actual gripe I think you are behind me in the queue for complaints because I have drawn attention many times to females who didn’t get their due credit on this site and and others who got credit that they didn’t deserve.. I have concluded that the site organisers feel that one wrong cancels out the other – ie the organisers are fans of the “Two wrongs make a right club”. Anyway I always find your posts interesting.

NB: I use the generalisation “organisers” because I’m never sure who is really calling the shots on this site – the Work Horse, W o C or Joel Hirschhorn or a combination of two/three of those..

    1. HI AGAIN LUPINO

1 I meant to say if the Work Horse is the culprit who let you down over Sylvia it’s annoying and if he wasn’t such a nice fella I’m you would want to give him a good thrashing.

2 However be consoled with the thought that he short-changes even his own idols in the credits he lists for them. For example he has Cary Grant’s 1948 hit Every Girl Should Be Married down as Every Girl should Get Married. So he’s not gonna lose too much sleep over failing to render “the things that are Caesar’s” in relation to your idols and mine.

      1. Hey Bob….I have added Ms. Sidney to the list of stars…..and I have corrected the Cary Grant movie title….that error has been out there since 2011…..that error is me simply typing in Grant titles with my memory…..maybe memory is not as impressive as I think it is…..lol. The waters are still safe….they are getting colder…..but we need one more weekend of tourist money….so jump right in.

        1. HI BRUCE
Just pulling your leg about the Grant title as the same meaning applies to both the old and new slight variations and the important thing was Sylvia getting her due mention as Lupino fights Sylvia’s corner long and hard and deserves something for loyalty. And of course “Delilah” has now got her proper recognition !!!

          1. Hey Bob….I am amazed it stayed wrong for so long. Thanks for the correction update….it was greatly appreciated. Glad Delilah finally got her proper recognition. I have even made her the star of Samson and Delilah on Victor Mature’s UMR page.

  3. Hello Bruce,

It is a pleasure to review an annual chart. I love that. 152 films, big list On the other hand, I saw only 12. I really liked Mr Deed and After the Thin Man (love the Thin Man).
    Sash an excellent job.

    1. Hey Laurent….you might actually find some new movies listed here…..as I dug out all the ledgers when doing this yearly review. 12 is not too bad…..not that far behind my total. I liked Mr.Deeds and After the Thin Man too. Hope you have enjoyed your vacation.

  4. These are the 174 1936 films I’ve seen from December 1992 when I saw film 8000 I have seen to the end of 2016. I update every year. This does not include 1936 films I saw before then like Laurel and Hardy’s Bohemian Girl and Our Relations, the Great Ziegfeld and others. Nor does it include any 1936 films I’ve first seen this year like Exclusive Story with Franchot Tone which I saw a few weeks ago as TCM saluted him one day. Key is film, studio, stars when I listed them, date seen and source (TV channel, tape or DVD)

FN is First National, a fairly big company in the 1920’s that Warner Brothers bought out about 1929/ Up until the early 1940’s Warners would release a number of their films as FirstNational Pictures. So Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Bette Davis and others LL have First National pictures in their resumes.

    1. Hey Dan…..wow….what a massive list. Thanks for sharing your list….which now has another home….good to have the information listed in more than one place. Your comment on Laurel and Hardy makes me realize I need to get a page on them. I was looking at a library book just yesterday…but once again….almost nothing that would help me figure out box office grosses. It is amazing that almost nothing is out there that talks about the finances of their movies. Makes me think it was a corporate issue to keep that information from getting out…wonder if their contracts had a profit clause.

Thanks for the key to understanding your list…and the info on First National….the Harrison Report always lists Warner and First National together. Your total of 174 1936 movies is truly impressive. I bow to your vast movie watching history. Thanks for the feedback.

  5. Another complete classic year! I love it!!! And a good year it was, judging by all the favs out of the 52 films I’ve seen 🙂
The great Ziegfeld with an Oscar winning performance by my very own “local girl done good” Louise Rainer. 3 good ones with Sylvia Sidney, the wonderful comedy (ask Pierre) Desire, Chaplin’s Modern Times, Dodsworth, Camille with Garbo dying graciously, the first Mae West I’ve ever seen, Go West, young Man, the better and highly criticized Klondike Annie, Come and get it, featuring Frances Farmer in her best performance before her descent into alcoholism and mental institutions, the underrated Rembrandt, Valiant is the word for Carrie, a “Madame X” like weepie boasting a fine performance by Gladys George,Theodora Goes Wild, some more Astaire, Rogers and Gold Diggers, Lloyds of London, Mr. Deeds and My man Godfrey. The enchanting Miss Sullavan didn’t have a good box office year, and by the one film I’ve seen, Next Time We Love, rightfully so. Bette Davis was still fighting WB for better parts, while others, like Loy and Crawford, were firmly established. Nice to see that Garden of Allah, lavishly produced in lush Technicolor but with a script that demanded a lot from the audience, did fairly well, landing on the charts surrounded by box office giants like Crawford, Temple, Dunne, Robert Taylor and Mae West. As always, thank you very much Mister Cogerson!

    1. Hey Lupino
      1. Tally count…..Dan 174, you 52, Flora 36, Steve 28, me 21 and Laurent 12….so another silver medal for you.
      2. Rainer got an Oscar for her role in The Great Ziegfeld….so I would say she did very well indeed.
      3. I see I only listed your girl Sylvia two times in the UMR column….sorry about that.
      4. I enjoyed Come and Get as well….the first of three Oscar winning performances for Walter Brennan….I have often thought a Frances Farmer page is one that we should do.
      5. You are right Bette Davis did not have a stellar 1936…but she was on the verge off liftoff….as her peak was just about to start….and would last a very long time.
      6. Myrna Loy had a very solid and busy year….4 of the Top 23 hits.
      7. I have not seen Garden of Allah….but it sounds like an interesting one to check out.
Thanks for the comment, visit and tally count….all are greatly appreciated.

      1. Bruce, have you not learned ANYTHING from my discussion about billing with Bob? Just because you give MY GIRL Sylvia no credit at all for THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE (your Number 9) doesn’t mean she wasn’t in it 😉
Great thought about Frances Farmer- although I doubt she had a lot of box office glory, her life certainly is worth talking about on her own page.
Taking the chance to name a fav from 1936 I have forgotten to include in my former post: These Three. Although badly watered down due to censorship, still a good movie with the lovely Merle Oberon.

        1. Hey Lupino….not sure what I was thinking….but I have corrected my error….as now Sylvia is listed with her three movies. I even gave her top billing….lol. I think Frances Farmer would make a good addition….especially if her numbers are easy to find…lol. I actually just watched These Three a few weeks ago…..good movie for sure. Bonita Granville was amazing….such evil in that role.
