British Actor Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort British Actor movies by his co-stars
  • Sort British Actor movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort British Actor movies by adjusted worldwide box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort British Actor movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each British Actor movie received.
  • Sort British Actor movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Wow…my British Actor Smörgåsbord page is picking up some views and some comments. Doing my comment at the top…because there are so many replies….it is hard to find comments (like Steve mentioned). As always….Bob and Steve…stellar comments and reviews of Steve’s latest video….about to head over to Steve’s video channel and check out Mr. More’s video. As for Remember the Night….I love that version of Titanic…..I have watched it a few times….and it even made my Top 10 list of movies watched for the year 2016……I only include a movie the first time I see it….and yes it took me that long to watch that movie. More has a very good part in that one….and eagle eyes can spot a very young Sean Connery in that one. Good stuff by the two of you….thanks for sharing these thoughts.

    HI STEVE

Sir Michael Redgrave was one of the most popular Brit stars of the 1940s being listed among the nation’s top 10 box office stars 4 times -1941, 1942, 1946 and 1947. He also appeared in the lists in 1951 and 1955 but overall did not have enough entries to be considered one of the Top Brit Box office champs of the 1950s as a whole.

However he always retained enormous prestige and was for example billed above Dirk Bogarde, Briton’s most popular star of the 1950s in the 1954 The Sea Shall Not Have Them as your posters faithfully illustrate. It’s nice to see that you don’tt usually tamper about with the billing in the way that naughty Work Horse can do.

Sir Michael*** was of course the head of one of Britain’s most important acting dynasties which included his daughters Lynn and Vanessa and son Colin. The latter two are “notorious” far-left activists while Lynn became an American citizen. It seems that she preferred Bruce’s mob to your crowd in Merry England Steve!

***It’s great to be able to correctly call”Sir Michael” an actor-knight whom the Queen actually dubbed Sir Michael. As you know others on this site refer to as Sir Michael an actor whom the Queen knighted under another name whilst I out of respect for her Majesty keep faithfully to her salutation “Arise Sir Maurice!”

Continued in Part 2 but by the way thanks for explaining to me the situation regarding the temporary problems with Bruce’s Otto Preminger page. What you say makes sense.

SIR MICHAEL REDGRAVE PART 2 First a correction. In my previous post I referred to the 3 Redgrave siblings in the present tense but sadly Lynn and Colin both died coincidentally in 2010. Apologies. Lynn is possibly most remembered in the UK for the the title role in the 1966 Brit hit Georgy Girl co-starring James Mason.

Best POSTERS for me are (1) both for my Dirk’s The Sea Shall Not Have Them (2) both for Fame is The Spur [the book by Howard Spring has long been one of my fave novels] (3) The Heroes of Telemark (4) Young Cassidy (5) 2 that I think I have admired before for Secret Beyond the Door (6) Time without Pity [which I used to confuse with Kirk’s 1961 TOWN without Pity and Sir Johnny Mills’ Town on Trial released in 1957 the same year as the Redgrave flick (7) foreign language one for Night my Number Came Up (8) Shake Hands with Joel [about the IRA troubles over here – glad we’re getting a look in for once] (9) 1984 The Go Between [in the opening of the film Sir Michael in voice over speaks the beloved quote that I like using “The Past is a Foreign Country. They do things differently there.] (10) The Way to the Stars teaming the Brit giant Sirs Michael and Johnny (11) 2 first-class ones for the creepy The Innocents with a “Scottish Rose” co-starring with Sir M (12) The 1st one for The Dam Busters and (13) both for the scary Dead of Night.

Best STILLS in my book (1) The Quiet American with Sir Michael in the role that was played by Sir Maurice in the 2002 remake – hope that statement doesn’t confuse the Work Horse! (2) Kipps (3) lobby card for 1984 (4) POW Redgrave (5) a very young Sir M in The Stars Look Down (6) Sir Michael in “Ernest”! (7) Sir M in The Browning Version – my own fave Redgrave movie (8) with Todd in The Dam Busters (9) Dead of Night and (11) The still and lobby card for The Lady vanishes [one of my brother’s fave films]. A very satisfying video overall and worth 98% rating to me. Good stuff.

Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, info, trivia and comments, always appreciated. Glad you liked the posters, stills and lobby cards.

I’m enjoying this series of British greats because of the wealth of movie titles, stills and poster art I haven’t used before in the nearly 800 videos I’ve uploaded since 2014. Very refreshing.

I’ve only seen 8 of Sir Michael’s movies but three of them are big favorites of mine – The Lady Vanishes (one of my most watched Hitchcock titles), The Innocents (still very creepy and unsettling) and Dead of Night (Redgrave’s segment is justly the most famous, he is very good as a ventriloquist with severe mental problems).

Six of Sir Michael’s films scored 10 out of 10 and they are all in my top 6 –

        Lady Vanishes ,The
        Dead of Night
        Hill ,The
        Dam Busters ,The
        Innocents ,The
Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner ,The

8 more films scored 8 out of 10. There is one 9 The Go Between.

The Browning Version is IMDB’s top rated Redgrave movie (Bob grins), and The Innocents tops the chart at Rotten Tomatoes.

The Admirable Kenny is up next.

          HI STEVE

Thanks for the feedback on my Redgrave posts and the lowdown on some of your scores and favourite Redgrave movies.

Not only am I finding your video entertaining – I’ve seen it twice already – but it is providing me with a trip down Nostalgia Lane in that your posters bring up some names of yesteryear of Brit cinema stars that many people will have either never heard of or have long forgotten – Rosamund John, Phyllis Calvert, Guy Middleton, Derek Farr, Ronald Culver and Bonar Colleano, a New York born B movie Yank who came to reside in the UK and act in supporting roles in British movies. Sadly he died at 34 in a car crash.

What do you think of our Brexit deal? All leg pulling apart as it affects both of us I would be interested in having feedback from a fellow English UK citizen when you’ve had a chance to study the provisions fully.

          Looking forward to Kenny.

Bob, I haven’t been following the news on Brexit much, scanning the news outlets now it seems May has a new proposal but some MPs are not going to be happy. I’ll go along with Boris Johnson, if he hates the new plan than it’s not the Brexit I want. I don’t want Britain tied up to EU rules, they are not the boss of us (as the Americans might say) we voted to leave and thats what I want.

  3. BOB ROY to BRUCE on Harry Brown (2009) says:
    November 11, 2018 at 5:29 am

.It is appropriate and timely that coinciding with Steve’s Brit series will this week be a rerun on TV of Sir M’s 2009 Harry Brown, which I am looking forward to viewing again. Why not? you might ask because it has been critically well enough received, you giving it a 69% rating, IMDB awarding it 72% and my own TV guide gives a Joel-like 4 stars.

However Sir M is virtually my age in it, it is a vigilante Death Wish type movie if I recall correctly and as you know “forever young” action heroes are generally not my cup of tea as neither are some of those in their prime.

I feel for example Statham and The Rock are totally lacking in screen charisma, Harrison, Arnie and Mel once had it but in my perception have now lost it and the mountebamk Stallone for me never had it. The calling of latter might ideally have been the old B serials of the 1940s in which he could play the likes of Flash Gordon but he missed the boat on those of course.

Perhaps I am so discontented with the Over the Hill Mob fooling around as action heroes because I am jealous of the pretense that they can still do things that are physically beyond me. If so I often assuage my feeling by (1) not watching them (2) reminding myself that they probably could NEVER do those things anyway.

SAM FUJIYAMA “Quince, isn’t that the movie where your own great screen hero Will Presstin dug the Panama Canal with his bare hands?”
QUINCY Awe Sam – come off it!”
[Quincy TV series episode “Last of the Dinosaurs” 1977]

For my money though Sir M has such strong charisma that I am willing to grant him the maximum latitude for poetic licence and if Harry Palmer came back and unilaterally dug a canal for the Brits somewhere I would happily buy into it! Who wants to be a fair-weather fan anyway? As the tagline on the posters for the 1992 version of the vampire saga Bram Stoker’s Count Alucard proclaimed “Love Never Dies!”

Hey Bob….I liked Harry Brown a lot. The ending can be viewed two ways….he is dead and seeing his neighborhood the way he used to see it….or he survived and the neighborhood has improved. I like to think he survived…but listening to the DVD commentary…not thinking he did. As much as I loved Caine in the movie….it was Sean Harris in a supporting role that really caught my eye….and I think his performance in Harry Brown is what got he noticed in Hollywood….he recently played the bad guy in the Tom Cruise blockbuster Mission Impossible 4533. Thanks for sharing these thoughts on Sir Michael.

HI BRUCE Thanks for feedback. I can’t recall my own thoughts about the “Brown” ending so when I’ve watched it again I’ll let you know what I think. For what it’s worth I never liked the ending to Bronson’s Death Wish where he was simply told to leave town. I haven’t seen the Willis remake yet but intend to as he is another action hero with at least screen charisma even if he is getting a bit “past it”

It’s seem that the Great Bruce season like the Great Brit series is continuing as again your idol, Cary Grant was mentioned on the radio today and once again there’s something for me in the matter.

The consensus among music historians is that the 3 greatest tenors in the first 3rd of the 20th century were Caruso, Gigli and my own fave John McCormack and you know Caruso was played by Mario Lanza in the 1951 The Great Caruso

According to a film historian on the air today because Grant had played Cole Porter successfully in the 1946 Night and Day there were plans at one stage for Cary to play McCormack in a biographical movie about the latter’s life

The project didn’t proceed but had it done so the singing voice of Grant would have been provided by McCormack via his recordings. That would have been some treat – Grants personality and charisma combined with MCormack’s singing! Such a treasure was denied the audiences who saw The Great Caruso because Mario used his own voice and great as he was he was no Caruso.

I’m half-sorry I listened to that radio programme because I have been made aware of what I have missed and am therefore left with a feeling of unrequited longing, though I did see Mc singing on the screen in Song o My heart (1930) and in a cameo in 1937 Wings of Morning in which John shared scenes with hank Fonda and Hank’s character praised the great tenor. Anyway take care..

Hey Bob….good to read that Cary is bouncing around your head and radio airwaves. Interesting about Grant playing John McCormack. I am sure like Night and Day….it would have been a box office success….but it might struggle in the review areas. As always…thanks for sharing all of this information.

      November 14, 2018 at 12:13 pm

HI STEVE Kenny More was Britain’s most popular star in the 50s after Dirk Bogarde and for 9 consecutive years from 1954 until 1962 inclusive Ken was in the Top Box Office performers’ charts in Britain and/or internationally. His movie career went swiftly downhill after 1962 and after that he was probably most noticed for his role in the TV series The Forsyte Saga

He and Dirk shared lodgings in their early days and after they became famous their old landlady was interviewed in the press and attested to what wonderful guys “my two boys” had been. You Brits love all that kind of stuff, don’t you!

I always considered him the “joker of the pack” because he had that rollicking “yo ho ho!” persona which he gave us at times even in serious dramatic roles such as that of war hero Douglas Bader in 1956’s Reach for the Sky. I always thought he would have made a good screen Santa! I loved watching him and for a brief while he eclipsed Dirk as my No 1 Brit.

Sadly Ken developed Parkinson’s disease in the 1970s and towards the end had to be assisted to even just move. I have seen quotes in which he described the mental hell that he was going through. Indeed one can imagine it.

“And then the very rock hath rock’d
And I have felt it shake unshock’d
Because I would have smiled to see
The death that would have set me free.”

Lord Byron – The Prisoner of Chillon [1816]

A thoroughly satisfying video which admirably covers the expanse of Ken’s film career from his days as a “nobody” to his wonderful top star years. Well worth a 98% rating in my estimation To be continued. Thanks for your comments about Brexit with which I broadly agree.

KENNETH MORE PART 2 – BEST POSTERS (1) Our Girl Friday showing Brit legend Joan in all her young loveliness (2) Some People [the theme song was playing the juke boxes in my first year in the RAF] (3) The Greengage Summer – quite a raunchy poster for a More movie in those days (4) The Deep Blue Sea (5) the set of posters for The 39 Steps (6) the first one for the Sheriff of Fractured Jaw [meant to make Ken a star in the US which didn’t happen though Bruce credits it with a respectable $83 million adjusted domestic gross, which was good back than for a film starring a Brit (7) foreign language one for Man in the Moon (8) The Admiral Crichton (9) The Comedy Man [the poster makes our Ken look like a Peeping Tom (10) Battle of Britain (11) and Doctor in the House.

My pick of the STILLS (1)With Mansfield (2) Lobby card for Crichton (3) lobby card for Doctor in the House also featuring Dirk (4) as Bader [arguably his finest role] (5) with Bacall (6) with Dana Wynter in Sink the Bismarck [one of the films in which he restrained his “yo ho ho” tendencies!] (7) Ken with beard (8) a stunning, evening frightening, one of the Titanic going down [a collector’s item] and (9) Genevieve.

I saw Genevieve on a double bill on Christmas Day 1954 with Rory’s western Dawn at Socorro. The film is also memorable to me because the son of the lead actress Dinah Sheridan is Sir Jeremy Hanley who served as a Conservative Minister of Education over here in Norther Ireland and was my own Minister and boss. He was Chairman of the Conservative Party 1994-1995.

He is a very nice fellow who is or was a bit of a chess expert though as a Government Minister over here he didn’t know his a** from his elbow. When a lobby group came to him looking assistance his stock response was “Leave that request with me. I will seek views on it.” Years later I read in the London Evening Standard that some medical group had gone to the Health Ministers looking extra funds and at the bottom of the Standard’s report was a miniature photo with the following wording beneath it JEREMY HANLEY “Is seeking views.”

Hi Bob, how did your Kenneth More posts end up all the way down here? If I hadn’t seen the link at the top I would never have found them. 😉

Many thanks for the review, generous rating, trivia, quotes, info and kind words, always appreciated. Glad you liked the posters, stills and lobby cards. Happy you’re enjoying this series of Brit videos.

I’ve only seen a few of his films but my dad was a Kenneth More fan. He was also a Dirk Bogarde fan so I must have seen more of these as a kid.

Two More films have scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – The Longest Day and A Night to Remember. There is one scoring 9 – Genevieve. Ten more scored 8 out of 10.

A Night to Remember tops the charts at IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. The Longest Day is 2nd at IMDB and Reach for the Sky no.2 at RT.

“After my father died, my mother had virtually nothing, and she gave me £150 and said, “That’s all I can afford, Kenny. You see what you can do”. So I came to London and recalled that Vivian Van Damm, who ran the Windmill Theatre, was a friend of my father’s, so I went to see him. “Are you Bertie More’s son?” What can I do for you?” I loved him. A lovely man. “I want a job”. “Start on Monday”. “What doing, sir?” “I’ll teach you. I need somebody to take over from me. Then eventually you can run the theatre. But don’t ever come to me and say you want to be a bloody actor”.

            HI STEVE

Thanks for the detailed feedback to my Kenneth More posts and the excellent quote.

I always thought A Night to Remember was a very strange name for a movie about the Titanic. If I didn’t know better I would have thought that the film was one of those 50s/60s romance/sex romps of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson/James Garner/Kim Novak/Dean Martin variety such as Pillow Talk, Move over Darling, Middle of the Night, Kiss Me Stupid and Ten Thousand Bedrooms bedrooms or Jean Simmons’ This Could Be the Night.

I don’t know how my Ken More posts ended up in the position that they did on the page but I can assure you that it was not intentional. However I have just been handed a powerful missive all the way from America that will enable me to exercise more control over this site in future than anyone but Bruce. If you follow my next couple of posts to Bruce you will see what I mean!

My thoughts on Steve’s latest video.

The Brits Are Here! The Brits Are Here! Sir John….good actor….though he was always the “old guy” growing up. Not sure I have seen many of his movies. Seen #40 Arthur 2…but barely remember it #36 Caligula…strange movie but memorable #35 The Formula …3 movie legends does not make a good movie. #27 Shining Through..seen do not remember his part #25 First Knight#24 The Whistleblower….Caine is best part of movie. #23 Shoes of the Fisherman….not a bad thriller. #19 Murder by Decree..fun Holmes movie #16 Around the World in 80 Days…fun but silly #13 Arthur..surprised it is not higher. #11 Orient Express..what a cast…so that is 11 of the first 30 seen.

The Top 10…seen #9 Elizabeth…minor but good role for him #8 Shine…another but good role for him, #6 Chariots of Fire..for awhile he was a Best Picture Oscar winning movie good luck charm #4 Gandhi….good luck charm strikes again #3 Beckett…good movie…but O’Toole steals the show #2 Julius Caesar…probably his best acting job #1 Elephant Man….small but good role…John Hurt is incredible in that one. So that is 7 of the top 10…and a total of 18. Almost half.

Hi Bruce, great post, cheers. You beat my tally, I’ve seen 16 of the 40. My favorites include – Becket, Murder by Decree, Julius Caesar (1953), Secret Agent, First Knight, Lion of the Desert, Around the World in 80 Days, Gandhi and The Elephant Man. If I was rating by performance instead of movie there would be a different no.1 but I’m rating the movie itself and Elephant Man had a better overall score than any of these movies. Hard to believe it was directed by David Lynch and produced by Mel Brooks! Thanks again for the vote, share and comment.

Hey Dan….well…these informative lists will make Bob very happy. Glad we now have a place to give these Brits a place to move around….lol. At least Dirk was on the list at one point. Glad to see A Bridge Too Far giving Dirk lots of connections…Michael Caine will keep him connected for a good bit more time. Frequent co-stars…gotta admit never heard of Geoffrey Keen or Robert Rietty. 17 Oscar winning co-stars…not to bad considering he made some many movies in England. Good stuff as always.
