Christopher Lee Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies any way you want.

  • Sort Christopher Lee movies by his co-stars
  • Sort Christopher Lee movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Christopher Lee movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Christopher Lee movies how they were received by critics and audiences. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Christopher Lee movie received.
  • Sort Christopher Lee movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR puts box office, reviews, and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Possibly Interesting Facts About Christopher Lee

1. Christopher Frank Carandini Lee was born in Belgravia, London in 1922.  His uncle was director Carol Reed.

2.  Christopher Lee is one of the few actors who portrayed three different Sherlock Holmes characters: Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes and Sir Henry Baskerville.

3. Although Christopher Lee was in well over 200 films, he has very rarely played a hero, having been a villain in perhaps about 85% of his films (even his bit parts lean towards the unsympathetic).

4. Christopher Lee worked with three different Gollums. The first Gollum, Theodore Gottlieb, provided a voice in The Last Unicorn (1982). The second, Peter Woodthorpe, appeared with him in The Odyssey (1997). The last, Andy Serkis, appeared with him in the Lord of the Rings films.

5. Christopher Lee was the only actor in cinematic history to have achieved a unique trifecta. He has played a Star Wars villain (Count Dooku), a James Bond villain (Francisco Scaramanga), and a classic horror movie monster (Dracula, the Mummy and Frankenstein’s Monster).

6. Christopher Lee  appeared in a total of 24 films with his close friend Peter Cushing.

7. Christopher Lee appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award® winners: Hamlet (1948) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). He is the only actor to appear in two films which were released more than 50 years apart and both won Best Picture.

8. Christopher Lee is listed as the Center of the Hollywood Universe by the Oracle of Kevin Bacon website at the University of Virginia, because he can be linked to any one in Hollywood on average in 2.59 steps.  (Hey Dan….not sure how accurate this is….but I know he is in the Top 10).

9.  Christopher Lee turned down Donald Pleasence’s role as Dr. Sam Loomis in Halloween (1978) (he later remarked that this was his biggest mistake).

10. On 16 June 2001, as part of that year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, Christopher Lee was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire “for services to Drama.” He was made a Knight Bachelor “For services to Drama and to Charity” on 13 June as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2009.  He was knighted by Prince Charles, but because of his age he was excused the usual requirement to kneel, and thus received the knighthood while standing.

  1. Christopher Lee was the # 8 most connected actor of the 1970’s, the # 8 most connected of the 1980’s, # 68 of the 1950’s and # 87 of the 1960’s (4 decades in the top 100).

  2. Jeez I’m late to the party again. Just have too many things to do.

Horror legend Christopher Lee at the UMR at last. Amazed you find the box office stats for Lee’s Hammer Horror output, some of them anyway.

I’ve seen 61 of the 101 films on the chart, I was expecting more. I’ve seen others that were not on the chart, for example – The Creeping Flesh, Horror Express, Satanic Rites of Dracula and The Man Who Could Cheat Death. I have 65 films featuring Christopher Lee in my movie collection.

Lots of favorites here including – Curse of Frankenstein, The Hammer Dracula’s, The Mummy, The Gorgon, The Devil Rides Out (one of my top favorite Hammers and not on the chart), 1941, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars prequels, Tim Burton movies, Three & Four Musketeers, The Wicker Man, Hugo, Horatio Hornblower, Battle of the River Plate and The Man With the Golden Gun.

Star Wars beats Lord of the Rings at the US box office but Middle Earth wins on the ratings chart. Hamlet tops the UMR chart, I’ve never managed to spot Lee in Oliviers movie. His friend Peter Cushing played Osric and was more visible.

Good work Bruce and thanks for the video share. Vote Up!

  3. 20 years ago Christopher Lee was the # 1 actor on the Oracle of Bacon list. Afterwards Rod Steiger, Dennis Hopper, Harvey Keitel and Eric Roberts rose to the summit. Since they went to Wikipedia info in 2019, Christopher has returned to the top,

Chris has made a lot of foreign films which may not gel with English titles so I don’t think I have anywhere near 24 titles for Peter Cushing. I had separate listings for Scream of Fear and Taste of Fear which I combined. I came up with 19. Deja Scene has 26.

These are all the connections on the 2020 list I have for Mr. Lee (remember that golden oldie ‘Mr. Lee’ by the Bobbettes).

    1. Hey Dan….well the first list of the mother lode of Oracle lists. Although the 100 movies listed here is one of the biggest totals on the website….there are still so many other Christopher Lee movies that did not make my table. Your list mentions lots of those movies. Peter Cushing is an actor that has been on our request list forever. Of their 24 movies together…I have alot of them here…so maybe it is time to do a Cushing page with the ones I do have in the database. First list…is beyond massive….thanks for putting it together. So many names on that list…many I am aware of. Second list is not impressive as the first put still….41 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty good. As always….great stuff….and thanks for sharing that information with us.

  4. According to my Letterboxd account, I have seen 15 Christopher Lee movies.

The HIGHEST ranked film I have seen is Hamlet.

The highest ranked film I have NOT seen is The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Rings.

The LOWEST ranked film I have seen, I think, is Bitter Victory

    Favourite Christopher Lee Movies:

    Captain Horatio Hornblower
    Hamlet
The Man with the Golden Gun
    The Three Musketeers
    The Four Musketeers
    Moulin Rouge
    Night Ambush
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
    The Crimson Pirate

Other Christopher Lee Movies I Have Seen:

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
    Airport 77
    Bitter Victory
    She
    Ten Little Indians
    The Traitor
    To the Devil a Daughter
    Night Ambush
    One eMore Time

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for the thoughts on Christopher Lee. Tally count: 24 for me and 15 for you. Almost all of my 24 would fall into the current category. Of your favorites…I have seen four them….The Man With the Golden Gun, the two musketeers movie and Hamlet (blink and you will miss Lee) and only two of your other movies (The Hobbit and Airport 77). So you saw the last Hobbit movie but not the other two? Good feedback.
